Replacing the battery in a PS3 DualShock
Controller
Problem:
PlayStation 3 (PS3) DualShock Controller won't keep charge
Possible Solution:
Battery needs replacing?
For a gamer, the last
thing you need is your DualShock Controller running out of charge and
this is what happened to me. I tried to charge the battery overnight on
the PS3, however the next morning, the charge did not keep. Fortunately
replacement batteries are available for the controller. These can be
purchased from Battery World
in Australia or through Deal
Extreme in the United States who also do free international
shipping. EBay is another option but I've been burnt from substandard
console accessories before and I needed a battery replacement today!
Given that a new
controller costs around $79.95AUD (June 2012) and my existing controller
works perfectly, the best option is to replace the battery which is
extremely easy to do. The replacement battery I purchased from Battery
World cost $19.95 and came with a 12-month warranty. Interesting enough,
the original PS3 DualShock battery measured at around 45mm with the new
battery considerably longer. However the original battery was held in
the DualShock controller by an adapter. The new battery did not require
this adapter to hold it in place. Also, the original battery was a
650mAh Lithium Battery with the new one from Battery World at 1350mAh.
This means that the new battery will hold a longer charge and Deal
Extreme's battery is 1800mAh.

Installation
To install the new
battery, you simply remove the 5 screws from the DualShock controller
and then remove the bottom casing from the DualShock controller. A
little force is needed to pull it apart. Once opened, you simply unplug
the existing battery which does require a little force and simply
replace it with the new one. Once again, force is required to to plug
the battery into the slot. The final part of the installation is to
screw the 5 screws back in place and presto, you now have unlimited
gaming again.
Step 1 - Remove screws from back of
DualShock Controller
Step 2 - Remove back cover of DualShock
Controller and old Battery
Step 3 - Connect New Battery and
reattach back cover
Step 4 - Charge Battery and start
playing!
So there we have it and
the entire process to replace the battery took just a few minutes that
not only gave me a more powerful battery for the PS3 DualShock
Controller but allowed me to get back straight into my gaming sessions!
Of course if this does not work, it's probably your controller that has
died but $19.95AUD from Battery World or $3.99 from Deal Extreme, it's
definitely worth to try a new battery before shilling out for a new
controller!
