Australia, 27 January, 2010 – Nintendo announces strong sales figures for 2009. GfK Retail and Technology Australia confirm that, as of Week 1 2010, Nintendo DS® – inclusive of all Nintendo DS models – is the highest selling console in Australia since the independent market research company started tracking sales in 2000. In 2009, Nintendo DS sold through more than 760,000 units.

Wii™ also continued to perform well throughout 2009, currently the home console has sold more than 1.7 million units in Australia. In 2009, Wii sold through more than 730,000 units- this is a record for a home video game console.

New Super Mario Bros. Wii™, which only launched in November 2009, sold through more than 200,000 units in only seven weeks, making it the only game to sell through 200,000 units, on any one format, this quickly.
Other Wii games that have performed well include Mario Kart™ and Wii Fit™. Mario Kart Wii has sold through more than 500,000 units in just 87 weeks, and Wii Fit has sold through more than 740,000 units and has been the highest selling game in both 2008 and 2009! The upgrade to Wii Fit, Wii Fit™ Plus (with Wii Balance Board) has sold through more than 152,000 units, bringing the total number of Wii Fit and Wii Fit Plus users to more than 896,000. This shows that more and more people are getting into at home fitness with Wii Fit and Wii Fit Plus. More than 134,000 owners of the original Wii Fit also upgraded their product by purchasing Wii Fit Plus standalone (without Wii Balance Board), bringing the total number of Wii Fit Plus sales (including both the standalone and bundle) to more than 286,000 units.

Furthermore the top six selling games in Australia for 2009 were Wii games: Wii Fit, Wii Sports Resort™, Wii Play™, Mario Kart Wii, New Super Mario Bros. Wii and Wii Fit™ Plus (bundle – includes Wii Balance Board).

For calendar year 2009, Nintendo recorded hardware unit sales share of 67 per cent for both Wii and Nintendo DS – 35 per cent for Nintendo DS and 32 per cent for Wii. The total gaming market was up 4 per cent in value and 7 per cent in units in 2009, compared to 2008.

“2009 was an exciting year for Nintendo”, says Nintendo Australia Managing Director Rose Lappin. “We released a new console with Nintendo DSi and some great games, as well as Wii MotionPlus™. 2010 looks to be a big year for Nintendo again, we have Nintendo DSi® XL coming, as well as some big titles across both consoles.”

Kurulin Fusion is selling for just $2.49.

$2.49! That’s less than a gallon of gas–at least here in the Seattle area. And Kurulin Fusion is more fun than a gallon of gas, too; it sounds better due to the Bach-inspired soundtrack directed by Nobuo Uematsu, and it’s safer. You don’t even have to wash your hands after playing the game unless you let someone else handle your PSP, which I don’t advise.
So, you might be wondering what the long-time editor of Nintendo Power is doing peddling PSP games? I sometimes wonder about that myself. The truth is I’ve been working with MTO and Tozai Games over the past year with their products and launches. Kurulin Fusion may not shake up the gaming world with innovation, but it’s a solid puzzle game with the added benefit of having Uematsu’s involvement. I encourage you to check it out, and we’re making it easy since we’ve got plenty of review codes. Just give me an e-shout at scott@scottpelland.com and we’ll get you a code.
The game at its regular price of $4.99 is a huge value, but Sony and MTO USA want to spread the word that good things can come in small packages–or no packages at all.

Built-in video capture to ship with Just Cause 2 – PlayStation players to publish their greatest achievements to YouTube

SYDNEY, January 22nd , 2010 – Square Enix London Studios, a part of Square Enix Europe, today announced that Just Cause 2 for the PlayStation 3 will ship with a built-in video capture feature, allowing players to record clips of their greatest in-game exploits and upload directly to YouTube.

With some of the most incredible emergent action sequences seen in any game, Just Cause 2 frequently features moments which simply defy description. Moments where the physics, gameplay and AI all come together to create an over-the-top stunt or spontaneously chaotic scene of carnage players will want to watch again and again. By activating Just Cause 2’s video capture feature, players will be able to automatically record the last 30 seconds of gameplay directly to the PlayStation 3’s hard drive and upload to YouTube.

BASE jumped from the highest bridge in the game? Captured. Jumped out of a jet fighter and crashed into an oil rig? Recorded. Parachuted off a cliff onto a passing helicopter, laying waste to a military harbour with missiles, before ejecting, skydiving down through enemy flak, grappling soldiers to passing aircraft, leaving nothing but the smoking remains of the military might? Saved, uploaded and published for the world to see.

Also available from the in-game menu is a 10 minute capture feature which allows players to create more detailed and planned presentations. Gamers will be able to capture and share in-game mission walkthroughs, create online speed-run competitions, direct their own South East

Asian-inspired Machinima and more, with the best YouTube videos linked from the official website allowing users to vote on their favourites, with prizes awarded for the best of the best.

As Rico Rodriguez, the Agency’s most powerful weapon, players must take on the island of Panau and its military regime in order to track down Rico’s former boss and mentor, Tom Sheldon, who has gone rogue with millions in Agency cash and Intel. Using a unique grapple and parachute combination, there is no vertical limit as the air becomes your playground: grapple a passing plane in flight, hijack helicopters, BASE jump from the tallest buildings or mountains and leave a trail of chaos and destruction in your wake. Just Cause 2 offers players the freedom to tackle missions any way they choose and, with over 100 vehicles and countless upgrades and collectibles, the choices for relentless adrenaline-fuelled action are limitless.

Just Cause 2’s video capture and upload feature will be available exclusively for the PlayStation®3 computer entertainment system. Just Cause 2 will also ship for the Xbox 360® video game and entertainment system from Microsoft and Games for Windows® and will be released under the EIDOS brand portfolio. All formats will release in-stores early April, 2010, in Australasia. More information is available on the official website at www.justcause.com.

The Worm Ate My Homework: New Back-To-School Computer Use Checklist For Parents

The Worm Ate My Homework: New Back-To-School Computer Use Checklist For Parents

Melbourne, 21 January 2010: AVG (AU/NZ) Pty Ltd, which distributes the AVG range of Anti-Virus and Internet Security products, has created a Back-To-School Computer Use Checklist For Parents (www.avg.com.au/resources/security-tips/).

In one easy list are guidelines to help parents understand the current terminology, what to be looking for, and how to ensure children are using computers safely and responsibly. It also includes an associated shopping list of software and accessories for parents to consider.

Lloyd Borrett, AVG (AU/NZ)’s Marketing Manager, said: “There is much to learn and monitor when it comes to your children’s use of computers. With the many threats out there today and changes in technology, it can be quite a daunting task for parents to keep up. From our extensive knowledge of what is happening in the area of Internet security, we have compiled a checklist covering all the issues.

“As parents and their children rely more and more on the information stored on home computers, I cannot stress too highly how vital it is to protect it against online threats or loss.”

With the government’s Education Revolution, and the growing use of laptops by school children, will come enormous losses of school homework, assignments and study notes through laptop damage or theft.

A child’s school may have an open wireless network, or kids could decide to work at the local Internet café. These are prime targets and leave laptops vulnerable to viruses, worms and other malware.

“It’s no longer a matter of the ‘dog eating my homework’. It will become a matter of ‘the worm ate my homework’ if parents don’t have all the protection mechanisms in place,” Borrett said.

“Using home computers safely has become very much easier as everything that’s required is now affordable and easy to install,” Borrett continued.

The overriding caution in AVG’s Back-To-School Computer Use Checklist For Parents

is to keep all security and backup software current by using automatic updates and ensure it is licensed, installed and running properly at all times.

“Viruses are being introduced so rapidly that most reputable security software vendors release multiple threat definition updates every day. Not only the operating system but all other programs and pieces of software on the computer need to be regularly updated,” Borrett advised.

For parents looking for security software, the AVG Internet Security 9.0 full suite solution delivers excellent Anti-Virus, Anti-Spyware, Anti-Rootkit, Enhanced Firewall and Anti-Spam protection (www.avg.com.au). Even the basic protection provided by the free version of AVG (www.avgfree.com.au), is much better than nothing at all.

Borrett also suggests a solution for parents worried about homework and assignments being lost, or the kids losing all their data if a laptop is stolen. He recommends they use an Internet based remote backup solution such as Carbonite Online PC Backup (www.carbonite.com.au).

Another recommendation is to educate children to stay away from the popular peer-to-peer (P2P) networks from which the vast majority of the files being shared are copyrighted songs and movies which are illegal to download and often carry infection mechanisms.

The AVG Checklist also includes a shopping list of helpful accessories suggesting everything from a USB key for easy transfer and transportation of data to a laptop security cable.

To view or download the Back-To-School Computer Use Checklist For Parents go to AVG (AU/NZ)’s web site at www.avg.com.au/resources/security-tips/.

NAPOLEON: TOTAL WAR DEBUTING CAMPAIGN MULTIPLAYER

NAPOLEON: TOTAL WAR DEBUTING CAMPAIGN MULTIPLAYER

Most Requested Multiplayer Feature Confirmed For Napoleon: Total War

Thursday 21st January 2010 – SEGA® Europe Ltd. and SEGA® of America, Inc. today announced that, for the first time in Total War™ history, the Campaign Mode in Napoleon: Total War™ will feature both single player and multiplayer modes.

This much-requested mode will allow players to experience the full depth of Napoleon: Total War in a multiplayer environment – either working to stop Napoleon’s advance, or competing against each other to better his achievements. Each of the three theatres of war from Napoleon’s career – Italy, Egypt and Europe – are available out of the box in 2 player turn-based online games.

Another exciting multiplayer option has been added to Napoleon: Total War – Drop-in Battles. When starting a Single Player Campaign in Napoleon: Total War, players are presented with an option to allow Drop-in Battles. Drop-in battles bring a fresh challenge to the single player campaign mode by allowing the players opponents to be controlled in real-time by an online adversary.

Campaign Multiplayer has been made possible for Napoleon: Total War by the immense success that the Campaign Multiplayer Beta for Empire: Total War™ proved to be. The Beta started on December 7th 2009 with over 15.000 Total War fans helping out in the testing of this new Multiplayer Mode. Feedback from consumers has been very positive, and with the BETA still ongoing, consumers can contribute to the testing of this new addition to the Total War series.

“Following all the great feedback we’ve had from our fans for the Empire Multiplayer Campaign Beta, we’re proud to announce that all three campaigns in Napoleon: Total War will be multiplayer enabled.” said Mike Simpson, Creative Director at The Creative Assembly and creator of the Total War franchise. “We’d like to thank our fans for all their support.”

Napoleon: Total War builds on the successful Total War series by taking all the features from previous games, such as the full 3D land and naval battles, the detailed campaign map, and an in depth diplomacy system by taking them a step further.

Napoleon: Total War hits shelves on 25 February 2010.

Second “Halo 3” Mythic Map Pack Drops onto Xbox LIVE

SYDNEY, AUSTRALIA – January 21, 2010 – “Halo” fans, prepare to step into an expanded fight on Xbox LIVE. Mythic 2 Map Pack, a Game Add-on developed by Bungie for “Halo 3” is set to arrive on Xbox LIVE on February 2, 2010 and will consist of three multiplayer maps previously only available on the “Halo 3: ODST” multiplayer disc.

Available on Xbox LIVE for 800 Microsoft Points, the Mythic 2 Map Pack brings the total number of “Halo 3” multiplayer maps to 24. The Game Add-on includes three action-packed maps: Heretic, Citadel and Longshore.

Heretic brings players to familiar ground as the “Halo 2” arena Midship returns in “Halo 3.” The stark interior of the Pious Inquisitor might appear solemn at first glance, but Heretic’s symmetrical spaces require players to execute complex strategies in order to outplay their opponents.

Citadel may be a long abandoned Forerunner stronghold, but its small, symmetrical confines are far from secure. Two opposing bases offer little safety for players looking for solace. Instead, Citadel forces small squads to adjust combat tactics and stay in constant communication.

Longshore lacks the commercial ships that once made it a lucrative port for Old Mombasa, but it still bustles with activity. Designed for large-scale combat and well-suited for smaller affairs, Longshore’s multitude of industrial buildings, elevated walks, and open inlets come together to create a complex battleground tailored for multiple combat scenarios.

Mythic Map Pack 1 and 2 are also included in “Halo 3: ODST,” which includes the complete “Halo 3” multiplayer map collection, and Firefight, the incredibly popular cooperative experience. “Halo 3: ODST” will act as a key to the upcoming “Halo: Reach” multiplayer beta which goes live later this year.

For the latest updates on “Halo: Reach” and the “Halo” universe, visit www.bungie.net and Halo Waypoint on Xbox LIVE or on the official Waypoint site at http://halo.xbox.com/en-AU/halowaypoint.
