Exploits overtake Trojans as the highest number of infections in February

BitDefender’s February threat report shows removable devices poses biggest risk

With two Trojans, two Exploits and one Worm making up February’s top five e-threats, this month’s chart sees exploits through removable devices and operating system vulnerabilities retaking the top positions as the methods of infection to watch out for.

February finished up with a surprise, with last month’s number one e-threat (Trojan.Clicker.CM) disappearing from the top ten. Instead, Trojan.AutorunInf.Gen – the generic mechanism that spreads malware using removable devices such as USB keys, memory cards or external hard-disks – was the top e-threat of the month accounting for 9.09 percent of global malware infections.

“External devices should be scanned on a regular basis,” advised Catalin Cosoi, senior researcher at BitDefender “This is a safe practice especially when these devices have been plugged into computers at work, internet cafes or other public locations,” he added.

An overview of the five most prevalent threats in February:

Win32.Worm.Downadup.Gen is up one place since January. Ranked second with 6.24 percent, this worm exploits a well-known Microsoft® Windows® vulnerability. “Win32.Worm.Downadup.Gen’s continued presence in our monthly top 10’s suggests computer users’ reluctance to update their operating system and their antimalware solution,” explained Catalin Cosoi.

“More alarmingly, security fixes issued by Microsoft® a year ago rectifies this vulnerability, but it is evident from the amount of infections each month that people are ignoring this too.”

BitDefender’s third and fourth e-threats for February are Exploit.PDF-JS.Gen with 5.13 percent and Exploit.PDF-Payload.Gen with 4.21 percent of the total amount of infections. These generic detections deal with manipulated PDF files exploiting different vulnerabilities found in Adobe® Acrobat Reader’s Javascript engine. Their purpose is to execute malicious code on users’ computers.

Torrents continue to be one of the favorite vectors of malware distribution. Trojan.Wimad.Gen.1 is February’s number five e-threat with an infection percentage of 3.37.

A yet-to-be-aired episode of your favorite series or a box-office movie could be your ticket for infection by this Trojan.

BitDefender’s® February 2010 Top 10 E-Threat list includes:

Rank Threat Percent
1 Trojan.AutorunINF.Gen 9,09
2 Win32.Worm.Downadup.Gen 6,24
3 Exploit.PDF-JS.Gen 5,13
4 Exploit.PDF-Payload.Gen 4,21
5 Trojan.Wimad.Gen.1 3,37
6 Win32.Sality.OG 2,77
7 Trojan.Autorun.AET 1,92
8 Worm.Autorun.VHG 1,85
9 Exploit.Comele.A 1,48
10 Trojan.SWF.HeapSpray.B 1,40

ASUS ROG: The Choice of Gaming Champions

CeBIT 2010, HANNOVER, GERMANY (March 4, 2010) — ASUS showcased Republic of Gamers products and gaming accessories at CeBIT, designed to push the boundaries of multimedia and gaming forward.

3D display

ASUS VG236H and the world’s largest 120Hz gaming monitor, the 27” PG276H, are full HD 3D displays that blow gamers away with eye-popping visuals, combining uncompromising LCD execution with sights previously exclusive to the cinema. Both employ alternate-frame sequencing in conjunction with active shutter glasses, doubling screen refresh to 120 frames per second. The results are ghosting-free, smooth 3D doing true justice to the latest AAA game titles, especially using NVIDIA® GeForce® 3D Vision™.

The Reality of Moving

ASUS has managed the feat of lifelike 3D on a powerful gaming notebook, the G51JX 3D. An uncompromising machine in its own right, this notebook deploys an Intel™ Core® i7 CPU to power unmatched 3D gaming on a 15.6” screen using NVIDIA® GeForce® 3D Vision™, the first notebook in the world to do so.

Unearthly Power

The Republic of Gamers goes where none have ventured before with the limited-edition ARES graphics card. It possesses dual Radeon HD5870 GPUs and 4GB of GDDR5 RAM for 23% greater performance than a top-of-the-line Radeon HD5970. As such, ARES is a limited production run and units are sure to become a rarity. The oversized massive custom fan increases airflow by up to 600% compared to reference, yet ARES is decidedly quieter than reference.

The Republic of Gamers MATRIX 5870 is another beastly overclocking hero with Super Hybrid Engine optimisation, granting automatic gains through 19% performance boosts during gameplay and a very quiet idle mode. Its iTracker2 adds memory timing adjustment to an already brimming overclocking interface and saves your favourite settings for use when needed—all via a single safe-mode button. The Extreme Cooler keeps power-sapping heat at bay, altering fan speeds in real time. Harnessing brute force through fine controls is the essence of ruling the game.

Extreme Foundations

Republic of Gamers branded Rampage III Extreme and Crosshair IV Extreme motherboards deliver the perfect platform for Intel X58 and AMD 890FX, brandishing jaw-dropping muscle. Four GPU support goes with a thermal design that laughs in the face of outlandish temps, as the Extreme Engine Digi+ harmonises performance and power to prolong lifespans and cut on energy consumption.

Overclocking has never been so effortless—ROG Connect is the ASUS tweaking suite, controlling a host of parameters even remotely from another PC. RC Bluetooth also allows Bluetooth overclocking from some smartphones.

Meanwhile, the Crosshair IV Formula was built with online in mind, optimising connection speeds and destroying lag in its tracks for multiplayer domination even as heavy multitasking occurs in the background.

Sight and Sound

The Bravo 220 graphics card serves as a centrepiece of home theatre PCs, combining exclusive ASUS Splendid™ Plus with unique light sensors to guarantee reactive video quality that matches ambient conditions. The Bravo 220 also comes with the Bravo Media Centre, allowing users to enjoy movies, videos, music and photos using a remote control and intuitive interface. Bravo also excels in eco-friendly traits, saving over 28% compared to competing models and operating at a silent 0dB.

Working together with acclaimed Sennheiser acoustics professionals, ASUS has developed soundcard-headset combo Xonar Xense to revolutionise the way people hear gaming. While most PC gamers suffer from miniscule headphone output, Xonar Xense pumps out a monstrous 7Vrms power through a built-in headphone amp. This brings out every audio nuance in games, movies and music, optimising sound positioning and audio dynamics.

Games come to life in startling 118dB sound clarity, supporting EAX, DirectSound, Dolby technology and many other standards. The GX 2.5 audio engine drives the ultimate aural experience, making every movement, whisper and gesture tangible as the Xonar range caters to gamers with Game Profile, a utility to maximise audio by genre.
