The seven pillars (components) of online security suite wisdom and you…

AVG (AU/NZ) Explains the Different Components of Internet Security Software

Melbourne, 1 June 2010AVG (AU/NZ) Pty Ltd continues its series of informative security tips by explaining for consumers and business people the major components of Internet security software.

So you’ve decided not to risk it any longer. You are going to install some much needed online security software. That’s a great decision! Now all you have to do is pick your package and away you go. It’s as simple as that isn’t it?

“Well, not always,” says Lloyd Borrett, Marketing Manager at AVG (AU/NZ). “You see, there are products featuring protection aimed at anti-virus, anti-spy, anti-spam, firewall and many more areas.”

What on earth do all these tools do and how do you know if you need them?

Let’s take a look at what would normally be included in a security package. “Basically there are seven typical components of an online Internet security suite and depending on what you do online, you may, or may not, need them all,” Borrett continues.

Seven pillars of online security suite wisdom if you like – and knowing what kind of guidance and protection you need now becomes critical. You might never have tried to ‘define yourself’ before, but now is the time as you will probably be making a decision on what type of product you need based upon what type of user you are.

The seven pillars (components) of security wisdom

  1. Anti-virus software: – everybody’s bread and butter for the online safety:
This is the one that everyone has heard of. Anti-virus software is often free for the basic editions and it knows about, detects and prevents viruses, worms, Trojans and some other malicious software code intended to damage your computer or your data (basically, your personal information). Malicious software code may also intend to use your computer to launch attacks on others, and anti-virus and Internet security software can prevent that too.

  1. Anti-spyware software: – if you don’t have it today, then you need to get it:
This is protection against the category of spyware, adware and other malicious software that tries to watch what you are doing online in an attempt to steal your information; passwords, bank account number, etc. This is part of the reality of our everyday world and will soon be as commonplace to your PC usage as your keyboard is to you now. Today, most free and commercial anti-virus and Internet security products include anti-spyware protection.

  1. Link scanning software: – essential for the casual surfer and the heavy web user:
A ‘Link scanner’ integrates into your Internet connection and automatically warns you if you are about to visit a web page that is a potential threat. You may have found the website hrough a link in a search engine’s results list, or through a link that has been sent in an email. This type of tool is an essential must-have for both heavy and light users for different reasons: the light user may not see enough potentially malicious links to build up a general awareness of what is harmful – and the heavy user might surf so fast that they fail to spot them, either way a link scanner becomes essential. AVG LinkScanner®, available as a free stand-alone product and included with other AVG free and paid products, provides real-time protection by checking every page for web exploits before it’s passed to your browser. Today, most other anti-virus products don’t include a link scanner.

  1. Anti-spam software:- essential for new users, extremely nice for all of us to have:
Spam is the common term for ‘junk’ e-mail which you never asked for and don’t want. Spam is gradually getting more malicious, as it can now be the carrier of a ‘phishing’ attack – asking you to go to ‘your bank’ or ‘your Facebook account’ and then to enter your username and password. Anti-spam software filters out these messages so they never reach your inbox in the first place. Most regular PC users have their own spam filters set up via their e-mail client, but a little extra protection doesn’t hurt.

  1. Behaviour monitoring software:- especially useful if someone else helps look after your PC:
Different vendors have different names for this (AVG calls it Identity Protection), but essentially this is software that forms a layer on top of your anti-virus package to detect any suspicious behaviour of programs on your computer. Typically, behaviour-monitoring software doesn’t need to get updates from the Internet. Instead of watching for the latest known threats it watches out for software doing things that it shouldn’t. If you are one of those people that uses a friend or even a local software support company to help you run your PC, or you like to do shopping, banking or gaming online, then this kind of security layer is essential for peace of mind. Today, most free and paid anti-virus products don’t include behaviour monitoring protection, but some Internet security products do.

  1. File download, online chat and social networking protection:- are you a heavy web application downloader?

This is software that specifically checks downloaded files for Internet threats after they have been received, but before you open them. If the file is perceived as a threat, it is normally blocked or archived somewhere on your PC where it cannot be activated. This type of product has a useful place on any PC for sure, but it will be of most value to those users who typically download a lot of applications from the web and/or are heavy users of web-based applications themselves. Today, most free anti-virus products don’t include this layer of protection.

  1. Firewall :- not just for large enterprises and corporate businesses:
A Firewall watches everything on your computer that tries to exchange Information with the Internet and also watches anything on the Internet that tries to send data back to your computer. It then either blocks information exchanges that it knows shouldn’t be happening, or checks with you whether the software that you are running really needs to connect the Internet the first time that software tries to do so. While you might still perceive this kind of protection layer as something only used by companies, Firewalls have a place in all systems and it won’t be too long before we start to think about bringing in Firewall protection layers. Some paid anti-virus products and most Internet security products include a firewall.

Borrett concludes, “Think about each of the above security components and how it might apply to you. Now that you’re building up a robust understanding of Internet threat defence layers, you can feel more confident about selecting an online security product that will provide complete protection for everything you love to do on the web!”

  • Outlined expansion: Future System on a Chip (SoC) Intel® Atom™ processors scale to deliver PC-like computing platforms for cars, smartphones, handhelds, TVs, tablets, on a choice of software.

Sydney, June 1, 2010 – At Computex today, Intel Corporation unveiled new products and features based on its low-power Intel® Atom™ processor family, including plans to further differentiate the popular netbook category and expand into several new market segments beyond its growing PC, laptop and server businesses.

In the past 45 days, Intel and its Atom™ processor has entered a variety of markets beyond the more than 50 million Intel-based netbooks sold in the past 2 years. Intel announced a processor and MeeGo* software win with Chinese carmaker HawTai Automobile for a future in-vehicle-infotainment platform; a greater than 50-times lower platform idle power reduction with Intel’s next generation Atom™ processor platform for handheld devices including smartphones; and a collaboration with Google*, Sony* and Logitech* to deliver a new Smart TVs experience powered by Intel Atom™ CE products and running Android*-based Google TV*.

Intel recently unveiled the future System on Chip (SoC) Atom™-based “Tunnel Creek” that, for the first time, will allow other companies to connect their own custom silicon to Intel’s SoC product. The Intel® Atom™ processor also powers the Intel® Reader, and the company has received more than 3,000 non-PC design inquiries – most new-to-Intel potential customers – ranging from fish finders to golf carts.

During his keynote, David (Dadi) Perlmutter, executive vice president and co-general manager, Intel Architecture Group, touched on these and other Intel efforts, which included showing off the world’s thinnest netbook running on the upcoming mobile dual-core “Pine Trail.” At just 14mm, the razor-thin “Canoe Lake” innovation platform runs cooler and is 50 per cent thinner than any other netbook consumers can find on the market today. In addition, Perlmutter showed a range of other Intel® Atom™-based devices spanning energy efficient blade servers, retailing systems, presentation projectors and multiple tablets.

“Intel believes the strength of the Atom™ franchise can help consumers realise the true potential for a common experience to enable the compute continuum,” said Perlmutter. “With platforms ranging from compact and portable netbooks, to Smart TV experiences and innovative tablets designs, Intel Architecture is driving innovative products based on a unique ‘port of choice’ software strategy.”

Keynote Highlights
Citing a million PCs sold a day1, Perlmutter also highlighted the momentum around the all new 2010 Intel® Core™ processor family, including Intel® Wireless Display and an overview of next-generation Intel® Core™ processors using the Intel microarchitecture codenamed “Sandy Bridge,” targeted to be in production late 2010.

Renee James, senior vice president and general manager of the Software and Services Group at Intel, joined Perlmutter onstage to discuss how software – and software choice – will help drive Intel’s vision for Atom™ and a cross-device experience. This provides consumers consistency and accessibility to their content on a choice of computers and PC-like devices. James also announced that Asus will be the first OEM to ship a pre-installed, customised AppUp client called “asus app store” on netbooks this US autumn, beginning with Windows and following with MeeGo*-based systems.

Acer CEO Gianfranco Lanci discussed with Perlmutter how future Intel® Atom™-based netbooks and tablets from Acer, running the MeeGo* software platform, will foster an open ecosystem of innovation.

“Acer will be ready with MeeGo-based mobile devices,” said Lanci. “MeeGo’s open software platform will present our customers with another choice of a friendly, easy-to-use operating system. We are pleased to collaborate with Intel in our continuous drive to provide effortless technologies that empower people at work, home – anytime, anywhere.”

New Intel® Atom™ Processors on Tap
In production now and on shelves before the winter holiday season, mobile dual-core Intel® Atom™ processors will deliver a noticeably snappier, more responsive consumer experience in the same compact form factors, and with the same great battery life. Intel® Atom™ processors N455 and N475 with DDR3 support for netbooks are available today and D525 and D425 for entry-level desktop PCs are expected to be available on June 21. Available to customers in early 2011, “Oak Trail” is our upcoming SoC Intel® Atom™ platform optimised for sleek tablet and netbook designs, delivering up to a 50 per cent reduction in average power consumption with full HD-video playback and targeting software choice including MeeGo*, Windows* 7 and Google operating systems.

Adobe Unveils Digital Viewer Technology for Magazines

Revolutionary WIRED Reader Application Delivered Through New Adobe Digital Publishing Technologies

SYDNEY, Australia, — June 2, 2010 Adobe Systems Incorporated (Nasdaq:ADBE) has unveiled a new digital viewer technology that enables print publishers to bring stunning digital versions of their magazines to life. This new publishing software was developed with input from Condé Nast’s WIRED magazine, a publication that recently debuted a digital edition for Apple iPad, utilising the new digital viewer technology. WIRED’s June issue Reader application, now available through the Apple iTunes App Store, is built using Adobe’s digital viewer software.

“Adobe’s work with WIRED has resulted in a digital magazine format that creates an immersive experience, allowing a publication’s unique content, look and feel and advertising to stand out in the digital realm,” said David Burkett, vice president and general manager, Creative Solutions at Adobe. “We aim to make our digital viewer software available to all publishers soon and plan to deliver versions that work across multiple hardware platforms. It’s safe to say that if you are already working in InDesign CS5, you’ll be well on your way to producing a beautiful digital version of your publication.”

With engaging, interactive features and a fresh navigational metaphor, the WIRED Reader showcases the capabilities of Adobe’s new digital viewer technology, allowing readers to experience video content, slide-shows, 360 degree images and rotate content in vertical and horizontal modes. Designed by the award-winning print team, the WIRED Reader goes several steps further, taking advantage of the tablet form factor and enabling readers to explore magazine content using touch gestures, including a zoomed-out browse mode, to see the content of the issue at a glance. Readers are able to experience the design fidelity of a print magazine, with the dynamic interactivity of digital media.

Mark Phibbs, marketing director for Adobe Asia Pacific commented: “The launch of the new digital viewer technology is significant for the publishing sector in Asia Pacific as publishers look for new business models, new markets and new creative opportunities that help them extend their brands online, creating new audiences of loyal and engaged readers.”

“The publishing sector in APAC is the fastest-growing magazine publishing sector in the world – and there’s no doubt that APAC publishers will lead the world in willingness to adopt new devices and new go-to-market models. They’re adaptive, entrepreneurial and dealing with an extremely savvy and online readership. Through this technology, Adobe continues to lead in the publishing technology sector, and to deliver on its mission of revolutionising how the world engages with information.”

From a local perspective, Michael Stoddart, product marketing manager at Adobe Pacific continues: “In Australia and New Zealand, the publishing landscape is dynamic. We consume information digitally more than ever before and this technology release will enable publishers to create content that fits into the anywhere, anytime way that we live. The new digital viewer technology will help publishers to use CS workflows to create content that they can publish to any device, now and in the future. Just like WIRED has done to great effect.”

“We’re currently working with local media companies and our local community of publishing solution partners.  Through this technology, we are in a position to rapidly build and implement new publishing workflows, with highly attractive return on investment for our publishing customers,” concludes Stoddart.

The viewer technology also promises a new advertising paradigm. With the WIRED Reader major corporations are already using the new interactive features to deliver high-impact brand campaigns. These advertisements encourage readers to interact with each brand, integrate seamlessly with the content and keep readers within the magazine experience. Adopting this new digital magazine medium, publishers have the opportunity to expand their advertising inventory and by reaching readers in new ways, increase circulation and deliver incremental digital revenue.

“Our partnership with Adobe allowed us to re-imagine and rebuild a print issue into an amazing digital magazine experience on the iPad,” said Thomas J. Wallace, editorial director of Condé Nast. “WIRED’s visionary execution of Adobe technology expands the potential of this new medium for all Condé Nast magazines. Our work with Adobe is just beginning. We expect to use this technology to deliver more of our publications over the coming months.”

Created with Adobe® InDesign® CS5 and additional Adobe publishing technologies, the WIRED Reader showcases how Adobe is enabling magazine and other publishers to deliver groundbreaking experiences across tablets, smartphones and other devices. Soon, the company plans to deliver software on Adobe Labs that will help publishers to transform InDesign CS5 layouts into compelling applications like WIRED Reader. Because this digital magazine solution integrates tightly with Adobe Creative Suite® 5, publishers can expect to leverage their existing workflow investments and designer skills.

The WIRED Reader can be downloaded from Apple iTunes App Store and costs AU$5.99*.

* Price taken from the Apple iTunes Australia App Store on 1 June 2010. The WIRED Reader is licensed, not sold. Since the software licenses are distributed through third parties, Adobe cannot and does not guarantee that any end user will receive any particular price.

FIFA World Cup 2010 madness is just around the corner.
Want to keep track of the action no matter where you are?
Score these FREE apps for your BlackBerry!

ScoreMobile
Built for BlackBerry by Canadian sports station The ScoreTV, this app provides up-to-the-minute sports scores, boxscores, player stats, betting odds, game previews, recaps, and league standings for a variety of sports. You can also personalise the display with the sports you’re into. Select FIFA under Leagues in the Menu and check out the latest FIFA news to tide you over till the games begin.

Navita Sport
Know when to follow your favourite teams in the FIFA World Cup with game times converted to your time zone setting. Does your World Cup knowledge extend to remembering how each country has placed over the years? Or how many times your team has made it to the World Cup? No need to store such trivia in your head. This app’s got it covered. And oh yeah, it’ll give you up-to-minute scores too. If you can think about anything other than football over the next month or so, Navita also covers Tennis and F1.

Univision Futbol – Copa Mundial 2010
If you’re mad for football you won’t care that this app isn’t in English … the team names are pretty obvious and it’ll give you all the up-to-the-minutes scores you want with 24/7 results, along with real time gamecasts, stats and lineups. Select your favorite teams and leagues for easy access via the application’s personalisation tool, “Mi Fútbol”. Opt for push notification alerts for selected games of the 2010 FIFA World Cup.
