AMD Invests in the Future of AMD Fusion™ APU Technology

AMD Invests in the Future of AMD Fusion™ APU Technology
Strategic investment funds available for select companies accelerating visual and computational PC experiences

Sydney, Australia: June 3, 2010 — AMD today launched the AMD Fusion Fund, a program to support development of new, enhanced consumer digital experiences by helping to further advance an ecosystem that promotes CPU and GPU collaborative computing.

The Fusion Fund was created to initiate strategic investments in companies working on solutions enabled by the accelerated computing capabilities of the upcoming AMD Fusion™ family of Accelerated Processing Unit (APU) products. Starting immediately, interested ecosystem companies may submit innovative proposals for investment to be reviewed and evaluated by AMD.

“The computing industry is undergoing a long-envisioned and inevitable transition from text-based computing to a digital world of natural human-to-system interfaces and rich visual experiences that are incredibly vivid and realistic,” said Manju Hegde, corporate vice president, AMD Fusion Experience Program, and Fusion Fund managing partner. “AMD Fusion APUs are designed to expand the art of the possible for software developers, accelerate application performance, and deliver levels of power efficiency conducive to cooler and sleeker PC devices.  The Fusion Fund will help expand the Fusion ecosystem focused on realizing the next generation of computing for the mainstream market.”

Projects for consideration include a range of next-generation and accelerated computing capabilities enabled by AMD Fusion APU products, including application software and tool development, unique device designs, PC components and innovative ideas which extend the reach of collaborative computing on the CPU and GPU.
“AMD’s efforts to foster growth in the ecosystem will not only benefit AMD and its APU products, but I believe the computing industry can benefit from greater support for smart, innovative companies,” said Rob Enderle, president and principal analyst, Enderle Group. “Because the APU is based on industry standards and pervasive x86 architecture, this technology could represent significant potential market opportunities for AMD’s ecosystem partners.”

In addition to development programs such as the AMD Fusion Fund, AMD actively supports its hardware and software partners through the AMD Fusion Partner Program. The Fusion Partner Program provides software companies and developers with technology enablement, development tools and support such as the ATI Stream technology software development kit (SDK), which supports OpenCL™ standards. Partners also receive marketing support to help them deliver compelling technology and innovative solutions based on AMD technology, further strengthening their business and allowing them to expand their sales network through AMD’s extensive ecosystem.

EA CHANGES THE GAME WITH NBA ELITE 11

EA SPORTS Set to Re-invent the Basketball Videogame Experience This Spring

3 June 2010, Australia – Electronic Arts Inc. have announced that NBA ELITE will be the new moniker of the long running EA SPORTS™ NBA videogame franchise. NBA ELITE 11 will revolutionise the way basketball games are played, with an all-new technology base, a new control scheme, and, for the first time ever, it will introduce real physics to a basketball videogame. Currently in development for the PLAYSTATION®3 and the XBOX™ 360, NBA ELITE 11 will be available in retail stores this October.

“We have a great opportunity to profoundly evolve the interactive basketball experience in a way that the category has not seen for a decade,” says Peter Moore, President, EA SPORTS. “In NBA ELITE 11, we’ll introduce a gameplay experience that’s as enjoyable for sports fans as anything in our lineup.”

Using the design principles from some of EA SPORTS top rated franchises, including EA SPORTS NHL® Hockey and FIFA Soccer, NBA ELITE 11 introduces several significant gameplay changes that center on user control.

The new ‘Hands-On Control’ scheme allows for one-to-one responsiveness of a player’s movement and actions on the court, as opposed to traditional predetermined animations that require users to wait while a scenario played out before making their next move. Hands-on Control applies to everything within a player’s offensive and defensive arsenal, including: dribble moves, dunks, drives to the basket, fadeaways, mid-air adjustments, blocks, steals and more.

The new real-time physics system in NBA ELITE 11 allows each player on the court to move independently of one another, removing the two man interactions that have long taken the user control out of basketball videogames. In addition, a new skill based shooting system requires accurate user input, based on a players position on the court, to score, versus the randomly generated dice roll that have driven shooting in basketball videogames in the past.

“NBA ELITE 11 will give gamers the same skill set that a pro basketball player has at his disposal,” said David Littman, Creative Director, NBA ELITE 11. “This is the first basketball videogame where you are controlling every movement, dribble move, shot, dunk, lay-up, steal and block in real time with one-to-one control. You’re no longer going to push a button and watch the computer generate a long animation sequence. It is like being on a basketball court with an amazing set of skills. This is going to change what people come to expect from a basketball videogame…forever.”

““From the first day of development on this product, it was clear that we intended to pioneer a groundbreaking change in the basketball videogame segment, “said Jordan Edelstein, VP Marketing, EA SPORTS. “It’s a whole new game that warranted a brand new name to fully capture the transformation we intend to deliver in NBA ELITE.”

Electronic Arts has been releasing basketball videogames since 1989. The first game, titled Lakers vs Celtics, was one of the first basketball games to feature real NBA teams, individual player likeness and signature moves.

For the next six years the franchise went through several name changes, including Team USA Basketball and NBA Showdown 94. The franchise rebranded itself to NBA LIVE with the release of NBA LIVE 95, a brand that has carried on for 16 years culminating in last year’s NBA LIVE 10. EA’s NBA licensed franchises have sold more than 25 million units since 1995*.

NBA ELITE 11 will be available for the PlayStation®3 computer entertainment system and Xbox 360® video game and is being developed by EA Canada in Burnaby, B.C. The game has not yet been rated by the OFLC.

World Cup Spam Volumes Soar

Spam centered on the FIFA 2010 World Cup has soared by around 27% according to IT security specialist, Symantec. To date, the company has identified numerous scams, phishing and malicious attachment spam, related to the world’s largest sporting event.

Symantec’s Samir Patil has commented: “Not surprisingly, 419-scam messages stand out as major contributors and with kick-off literally around the corner, we expect all spam volumes related to the World Cup to grow.”

Online users can expect to receive many variations of spam types, with offers of fake game tickets, malware distribution via fake videos purportedly showing highlights of the games and fake FIFA product offers.

“We first observed FIFA-related scams way back in 2005 when South Africa was announced as the 2010 FIFA World Cup host country. However, the message volume during the last couple of months has shot up,” Patil says.

While tracking the prevalence of FIFA spam, Symantec analysed the spam corpus for certain obvious words being used in various parts of the e-mail (headers, body or obfuscation text) such as “FIFA 2010”, “2010 FIFA”, “Football World Cup”, and “FIFA World Cup”.

“We found a definite month-to-month rising trend, as shown in the graph below. Compared to the World Cup spam volume in April, the data up to May 25th shows an increase of approximately 27%,” Patil says.

AMD Demonstrates World’s First Fusion APU at Computex 2010

AMD Demonstrates World’s First Fusion APU at Computex 2010

  • AMD Fusion technology preview offers glimpse into a sleeker, cooler, more vivid future for the computing experience; CPU and GPU on a single chip –
  • AMD extends leadership with new desktops and notebooks powered by VISION technology –

Sydney, Australia: June 3, 2010 — At Computex 2010, AMD today delivered the first public demonstration of an AMD Fusion processor, initiating the accelerated processing era.  The AMD Fusion Family of Accelerated Processing Units (APUs) represents a significant shift in processor architecture and capabilities, combining high-performance serial computing and parallel graphics processing cores onto a single die to improve visual and data-intensive tasks that are pervasive in today’s computing environments.  A video of today’s demonstration can be found here.

Rick Bergman, senior vice president and general manager, AMD Products Group, provided an APU technology demonstration during a press conference today. This demonstration provided a sneak peek into the upcoming seismic shift in the computing industry: power-efficient processors that combine CPU, GPU, video processing and other accelerator capabilities in a single-die design to efficiently power the most popular and demanding consumer experiences, from HD video applications to media-rich Internet experiences to DirectX® 11 games. The AMD Fusion Family of APUs represent a distinctly powerful processing approach to the evolving digital consumer landscape, where more than 28 billion videos are watched each month online and a thousand pictures are uploaded to social networking sites every second.

“Hundreds of millions of us now create, interact with, and share intensely visual digital content,” said Rick Bergman, senior vice president and general manager, AMD Product Group. “This explosion in multimedia requires new applications and new ways to manage and manipulate data. Low resolution video needs to be up-scaled for larger screens, HD video must be shrunk for smart phones, and home movies need to be stabilized and cleaned up for more enjoyable viewing.  When AMD formally launches the AMD Fusion family of APUs, scheduled for the first half of in 2011, we expect the PC experience to evolve dramatically.”

Software Development
Consumers are hungry for applications that run faster and make digital media easier to enjoy, and a new wave of software innovation is taking place as AMD software partners take advantage of AMD APUs and GPUs to enable better experiences across an ever-widening set of content. Microsoft joined AMD on stage at Computex and discussed how AMD Fusion APUs can enable improvements to applications such as Microsoft® Windows® 7 and DirectX® 11, and how CPU and GPU collaborative computing can enable superior PC experiences.

“While visual computing has made incredible strides in recent years, we believe that the AMD Fusion family of APUs combined with Windows 7 and DirectX 11 will fundamentally change how applications are developed and used,” said Steven Guggenheimer, corporate vice president, original equipment manufacturer division, Microsoft. “Applications such as Internet browsing, watching HD video, PowerPoint and more can enable more immersive, visually rich, and intuitive experiences for consumers worldwide.”

In addition to Microsoft DirectX with DirectCompute, software developers can also build enhanced applications using OpenCL via the ATI Stream SDK, which further underscores AMD’s commitment to industry standards

AMD Fusion Fund
At Computex 2010, AMD also unveiled the “AMD Fusion Fund,” a vehicle to make strategic investments in companies developing innovative solutions that will take advantage of the forthcoming AMD Fusion family of APUs. Additional details were disclosed on the AMD Fusion Fund in a separate announcement.

Extending Consumer and Graphics Leadership at Computex
With the launch of the AMD Fusion Family of APUs planned for the first half of  2011, AMD is positioned to extend the leadership it already has in the consumer PC market with VISION Technology from AMD and in the graphics market with the award winning ATI Radeon family of GPUs. At Computex, both product lines were on display for attendees, including many of the brand new VISION-powered SKUs recently launched by OEMs. In May, AMD announced a significant platform refresh for its VISION Technology, with as many as 135 new ultrathin and mainstream notebooks arriving on the market.
