COCO & IGORAt the 1913 première of Igor Stravinsky’s Rite of Spring, the revolutionary ballet was considered too modern and too radical. Whilst it enrages the majority of peolpe, one audience member, Coco Chanel, is entranced. When she meets Stravinsky again years later, he is destitute and his wife consumptive, while Chanel is highly successful. She offers his family her country villa, but the air is electric with tension, stoking the sexual and creative fires of these cultural titans. With costumes by Karl Lagerfeld, and starring Mads Mikkelsen (CASINO ROYALE) and Chanel’s own Anna Mouglalis, COCO & IGOR is a lavish tale of drive and obsession, and in no small feat, officially endorsed by the House of Chanel. The genius of this film is not only to allow the artist to illuminate his methodology (he is wonderfully articulate), but also to feature his friends and colleagues (Brice Marden, Robert Storr, Dorothea Rockburne, Philip Glass, Arne Glimcher, Kiki Smith, Elizabeth Murray, Alex Katz, Kirk Varnedoe, among others) who make important contributions to appreciating Close’s gifts.
