AVG (AU/NZ) Launches Business Resource Centre

Company Research Reveals Disconnect between SMB Security Awareness and Level of Protection – One in Seven Small Businesses are not Protected against IT Security Threats

MELBOURNE and AMSTERDAM, 23 November 2010 – AVG (AU/NZ), the Australian, New Zealand and South Pacific distributor of AVG Technologies’ small- and medium-sized business (SMB) and consumer anti-virus security products, today announced the launch of its web-based Business Resource Centre. The Resource Centre provides SMB business owners and IT managers with informative guides, blog posts, videos, demos and tools to help them protect their businesses from Internet and network security threats.

AVG’s Business Resource Centre was designed in response to the AVG SMB Market Landscape Report 2010, which shows that despite the fact that 83 percent of businesses surveyed recognise the need to protect against Internet security threats, a surprisingly high proportion, 1 in 7, are not deploying any IT security solutions.

The Resource Centre, developed in partnership with GFK Roper, is a one-stop-shop for SMB Internet security and anti-virus needs. The site features downloadable AVG Small Business Security Guides that provide SMBs with a blueprint for creating effective, secure business environments. The site also offers a vibrant SMB blog with topical commentary and intelligence on emerging threats.

For those who like to work interactively, the Resource Centre offers sales support via phone or email to help SMBs make the right decisions for their businesses. It also provides case studies, downloads and tutorials, many of which are illustrated with instructional videos to bring the online learning experience to life.

“As our research shows, small businesses have a fundamental understanding that Internet security threats can be a hazard to their businesses, but they obviously lack the time or the resources to adequately protect their businesses from cyber criminals who may try to steal valuable company information,” said Lloyd Borrett, Security Evangelist, AVG (AU/NZ). “AVG’s Small Business Resource Centre is designed to educate small- and medium- sized business owners about online threats to their businesses and provide them with a myriad of resources to help protect themselves from these threats.”

AVG (AU/NZ)’s small business resource centre is located online at AU: www.avgatwork.com.au and NZ: www.avgatwork.co.nz

Customers Switching to AVG Get Remaining Term on Existing Licence Free

Melbourne, 23 November 2010 – AVG (AU/NZ), the Australian, New Zealand and South Pacific distributor of the award-winning AVG anti-virus and Internet security products, has launched a ‘Make the Switch’ campaign aimed at getting SMBs to upgrade their existing business anti-virus security licence to the AVG 2011 Business Edition family of products. The offering is designed to give AVG resellers greater leverage with companies that feel they are “locked” into other agreements.

Under this lead generation program, which is available until 31 December 2010, new customers who trade in their existing non-AVG security licence (up to 24 months) for AVG 2011 Business Editions get their new AVG licence extended by the remaining term on their previous licence. For example, if an SMB is dissatisfied with their existing, two-year security licence and is only six months into the agreement, the company can opt for a two year AVG licence which AVG (AU/NZ) will extend for the remaining 18 months. That’s three years and six months of AVG protection!

“Our research into the global SMB sector showed there are three drivers for business owners to switch security vendors: end of their contractual agreements, new solutions and the need to react to security breaches,” explained Michael Dowling, Corporate Sales Director for AVG (AU/NZ). “Yet with the majority of these businesses being only six to 12 months into their existing licence, many will miss out on the added protection and security features that the latest anti-virus and Internet security products offer.”

“AVG has been a surprising success for our company and the SMB sector. It has simplified vendor engagement, allowing my team to spend more time selling and managing customers,” said Peter Archer, Director of Queensland-based ECS Computer Solutions. “Their product is the perfect fit as it’s specifically created with SMBs in mind, unlike other security vendors who start off with an enterprise product and reverse engineer something for smaller operations, meaning greater complexity, management and support costs. AVG (AU/NZ)’s honest approach, support of the reseller community and discount structure ensures they will be our security vendor of choice for many years to come.”

AVG Internet Security Business Edition 2011 is an ideal solution for businesses with a high reliance on the Internet, offering support for a wide range of business-critical operations including online transactions, email communications and protecting sensitive customer data. The new Edition offers exceptional real-time protection against the latest online threats, keeping critical business data safe and computers and networks running smoothly so business owners can focus on what’s important – running their businesses.

Trade-In Offer

To ensure that SMB owners do not miss out on the added protection of its latest security offering, AVG (AU/NZ) is offering them the chance to trade in up to 24 months of their current non-AVG security solution. After confirming proof of competitor security coverage and the expiration date for coverage, AVG (AU/NZ) will round up the length of their existing licence to the nearest month. For example, a business with six months and 10 days remaining will be given seven months of additional protection.

Tips for Safe Shopping on Mobile Devices and Social Media Sites this Holiday Season

BitDefender offers expert advice for staying safe while shopping online

Increasingly, holiday online shopping is expected to take place increasingly on mobile devices instead of home and office computers. According to the Mobile Marketing Association, 59 percent of consumers plan to use their mobile device for holiday shopping and planning. A separate study by Stamps.com found 54 percent of retailers plan to use social media to reach consumers during the holidays this year. With so much holiday activity happening around mobile and social media sites, just as consumers need to know about deals, they also need to know how to avoid scams. Follow these tips to stay safe:

Be wary of the small screens on mobile devices:
The small screen on mobile devices make it hard to see a full URL. A link may begin with a legitimate store name but actually redirects you to a malicious site.

Avoid unknown messages on social media sites:
Don’t click unsolicited links that come through social media sites. Social media messages are no different to email inboxes – treat messages from friends or strangers that direct you to another website as spam.

Keep private info to yourself:

Don’t share personal information like phone numbers and addresses and be selective when choosing friends and followers. Set the strictest privacy settings available.

Social research not referrals:

Social media is a great resource for researching gift ideas, but be weary of clicking links. More than 50 percent of people recommend a product or service on social media sites and hackers take advantage of this. Be aware there’s a big difference between “the iPad is a great gift!” and “click here for a free iPad.”

Too good to be true? Run a background check:
Found a price or product from an unknown site that’s too good to be true and you’re not sure if the site is legit? Check it out on respected review sites such as Choice.

Avoid purchases while surfing on public Wi-Fi:

It’s fine to search for gifts while sipping your afternoon latte at the coffee shop, but don’t enter personal information while you’re out and about – open networks mean a hacker could easily steal information like usernames, passwords and credit card numbers. And if you have to do it, make sure “HTTPS” appears in the URL before adding any payment details.

Be charitable, give reputably:
Social media messaging and text messaging are great ways to donate to your favourite charities during the holidays. However, hackers have proven they can quickly take advantage of these methods to set up fake charities and divert your donation to their bank account, or to convince you to perform some malicious actions, like visiting a certain website or installing a certain application. Double check that your gift is going to a reputable charity by checking out the website, and by searching the internet for any scams that might be associated.

Use protection:

While preparing for the holidays – whether planning a party, shopping for gifts or posting photos – protect yourself against malware and privacy leaks with BitDefender’s safego Facebook security app, which scans for viruses in messages and on your wall, as well as alerts you to privacy settings that may be exposing information. It’s the best way to stay safe on Facebook this holiday season
