Nintendo 3DS Launch in Sydney

Nintendo 3DS Launch in Sydney

Nintendo launched the Nintendo 3DS in Sydney this week. To welcome the replacement for the aging 6-year old Nintendo DS, Nintendo held a function at the Rocks, where I was lucky enough to try out the system that has blown away so much of the world’s media already.

Firstly, a quick overview of the 3DS. It seems to be around the size of a DS Lite, perhaps slightly larger, although we were warned that these were test units. It has 2 screens, like the DS, with the bottom screen able to be touched using a new-telescopic stylus. The top screen shows the 3D visuals whose depth is controlled using a Depth Slider on the top right of the unit, to control the amount of 3D. A new analogue controller (named the circle controller) is added to the digital controller. A 3D camera is on the back which allows you to take 3D pics viewable on the 3DS while there is a 2D camera on the front, similar to the DSi. To complete the package, there is the ubiquitous motion sensor/gyroscope and wifi.

It’ll come with a few simple games using an “augmented reality card” – put simply a card that helps the DS get work out the perspective. Laying the card on a table and pointing the 3DS at it will, for instance, provoke a 3D dragon to come out of the card allowing you to shoot at it from all different angles. Great fun and works most of the time, but just a warning that this should not be attempted under low-light conditions – the 3DS will stop detecting the card and the dragon will disappear. Other augmented reality games are available – 6 in total.

The game range at launch is pretty good, with some pretty big franchises in there. I did get to play Super Street Fighter IV and yes, I was impressed. It’s great seeing these characters that you have grown to love in 3D. The circle controller was a little fiddly to perform the combinations, but I am sure I’ll get used to it. What is a launch without some great first part games – Kid Icarus, Nintendogs, Ocarina of Time (I’ll never get sick of all the different releases of Ocarina). We did get to play Resident Evil : Mercenaries as well. 3D Zombies and tight controls mean I can’t wait to get my hands on this one.

Talking about the 3D, does it work? In a word yes, and it’s pretty amazing. You certainly have to find that sweet spot, and sometimes the sweet spot is lost – I am unsure if you can put that down to inexperience with the 3DS or the games which are in the final stages of development. The 3D effects of these titles on show seemed to give the illusion of greater detail and fluidity. Although obviously the 3D is constrained to planes behind the glass (unlike in the cinema), it’s still exciting to see how this technology will be used in the future.

There still are some negative points associated with the launch though. A$349.95 is approaching Wii launch price territory and it’ll be interesting to see who will fork out that much money for another gadget. The 3D effect can be turned down, which is an advantage but it can also be turned down to 2D which has resulted in some game developers remarking on the fact that they can not make the 3D an integral part of the game. I believe the best games will be the ones that make full use of the 3D and do make it a necessary component of the game. The last is the advice of the Nintendo that the 3D is not suitable for children under 6 as their eyes are still developing. This may prevent some parents from buying the system, but parents can still make use of the depth slider.

There is no doubt that the 3DS will be a success, and with Sony PSP products on the near horizon, 3DS will have a huge head start and a discerning difference – 3D. Sony will make it difficult to create such a difference with their products, with the abundance of gadgets with cheap games already in the pockets of consumers. With the 3DS, Nintendo have continued their path of innovation and let’s hope this heralds a new era of affordable 3D content to the consumer.

Plenty of Phish in the Sea – Online Dating Tips from AVG (AU/NZ)

Melbourne and Amsterdam, 14 February 2011. It’s no secret that online dating is becoming more and more popular all over the world. In fact it’s now a multibillion dollar industry that helps people find love over the net.

Lloyd Borrett, Security Evangelist for AVG (AU/NZ) Pty Ltd, says: “While falling madly in love isn’t something you can really plan for, online dating is very different: you need to pick the right dating service (and so many to choose from!), the right pictures (so many bad ones!), think of something funny to say and put your best foot forward in every way.

“But putting all this information about yourself out into the ether has risks of its own. Up to as many as 10% of all new profiles on free online dating services are thought to be scammers1. But why would scammers want to be on dating sites? Dating sites are goldmines for personal, professional and recreational information, not to mention the more sinister.

“So trust no one? Not quite. There are a few tips you can follow to make sure that you’re protecting yourself and your information while looking for love online this Valentine’s Day and beyond,” Borrett says.

Use a reputable, paid dating service – Famous brand names are an easy security win. They’ll have secure websites and the paid subscription should deter most troublemakers. The large user base will help you find your match too!

Don’t accept virtual gifts from strangers – The virtual gift industry is worth over US$1 billion in the United States alone2 and hopefully you’ll be receiving some e-cards and e-roses yourself. But as with real life, don’t accept gifts unless you know who they’re from and what they could be.

Think carefully about your profile – Make sure that you’re not revealing anything that you don’t want to in your profile. Details such as your salary, address and phone number are things that you don’t need to be sharing in public and could make you a target for scammers and identity thieves.

Use your profile inbox – Emails asking you to “reset your password” or “confirm your details” could easily be from scammers posing as official emails from your dating service. These days most services come with profile emails allowing you to contact other members and for the site itself to contact you. If you’re worried about the authenticity of an email, check your profile’s inbox before giving away any information.

Watch for email discrepancies – Does the language, style and tone sound the same each time? Is the email personal in content, or could it be someone copying and pasting the answers from a pre-written ‘script’.

Beware the sob story or emergency only you can help with – don’t send money or your credit card details to strangers.

Don’t transfer money for someone you’ve met on the Internet –they will probably ask you to pay a small amount of money to free up the funds in another country – this is a variation on the Nigerian scam. It could also be money laundering and is illegal.

If the photo looks too good to be true, it probably is – while plenty of attractive people are also looking for love, lots of scammers put up false photos to attract their victims. Does the photo match up with their description?

Borrett says, “Online dating is really no different from meeting someone at a party – use your commonsense and trust your instincts – and hopefully you’ll meet your perfect match.”

Konami Digital Entertainment GmbH and Twentieth Century Fox Consumer Products today announce the critically-acclaimed Karaoke Revolution franchise will return with an all-new lineup, featuring 20 of the best songs and show moments from part two of Season One from the award-winning hit television series.

Hot off the heels of the original smash hit, Karaoke Revolution Glee: Volume 2 will let gamers once again feel like part of the world’s most popular glee club – New Directions – as they sing alongside their favourite characters. To top it all off, the game will also feature extended performances and exclusive clips from the show offering fans excellent video montages and never-before-seen show moments.

“We knew that GLEE fans were unbelievably passionate and loyal, but even we were surprised by the overwhelming success of the first Karaoke Revolution Glee title and the demand for the follow-up,” said Kunio Neo, President of Konami Digital Entertainment GmbH. “Well, now ‘Gleeks’ have their wish and with this new game they can perform even more of the hits that have made the show such a runaway success.”

“The close and personal connection that comes with a GLEE videogame is unparalleled and this next installment to the Karaoke Revolution Glee franchise will allow us to bring fans even closer to the music, the storylines and the characters that they’ve come to love,” said Gary Rosenfeld, Senior Vice President, New Media for Fox Consumer Products. “It’s also going to feature some of the hottest musical numbers the show has ever produced, so fans will have a lot to look forward to.”

In addition to Karaoke Revolution’s proprietary voice recognition technology, which accurately recognises and scores vocal pitch and rhythm, Volume 2 comes fully equipped with all-new audio features and voice applications. A newly added vibrato indicator will help players hit those high notes and improve their vocal skills, while independent volume controls are available to adjust the vocal and instrumental noise levels on each track depending on the singer’s preference. For a truly unique performance, players can also add vocal effects to every song. Additionally, as new achievements are reached, gamers can unlock themed GLEE items to collect in Scrapbook Mode.

Karaoke Revolution Glee: Volume 2 is slated to release this autumn exclusively for Wii.

Bieber Fever, Lady Gaga and… John Lennon!

Music dominated the kids’ entertainment lists and the biggest standout was international teen singing sensation, Justin Bieber. At number one globally, Bieber took a dominant position in the top searches of every country except for India, China and Japan.

Your old music collection could be more popular with kids than you think. Towering at second place globally, kids around the world experienced a spike of curiosity over John Lennon this past year. Parents may be surprised to learn that John Lennon was a top term in Australia, India, Ireland, Italy, Malaysia, New Zealand, Singapore and the United States. The classic rock icon, who was remembered in 2010 with the 30th anniversary of his death, even beat out Lady Gaga, whose catchy beats and unforgettable antics earned her the number three slot in the global list.

“Dynamite” by Taio Cruz Explodes the Charts

Pop songs comprised 13 out of the top 25 entertainment searches, but the top searched-for song by kids worldwide was actually a little more R&B: the hit track Dynamite by Taio Cruz was a clear favourite. Beyond that, the top 10 singles that kept kids dancing to the same beat in countries around the world were:

1. Dynamite, by Taio Cruz

2. Waka Waka, by Shakira

8. Nein Mann, by Laserkraft 3D (a top track in Germany)

9. Like A G6, by Far East Movement

10. Written in the Stars, by Tinie Tempha (featuring Eric Turner)

When Kids Aren’t Listening To Music, They’re Watching TV

Music may have been the biggest entertainment driver for kids on the Internet, but TV wasn’t too far behind. The musically oriented and competitive reality shows American Idol and X-Factor were the two top shows for kids on the Internet. Following not far behind, and maybe also for its interactive online games, Ben 10 was a strong contender, especially for kids in Malaysia and Hong Kong.

Parents Should Keep the Dialogue Going

“Sometimes parents have blind spots about their kids’ rapidly evolving likes and interests, especially when it comes to how their kids spend time on the Internet,” said Marian Merritt, Norton Internet Safety Advocate and Chair of the Norton Online Family Advisory Council. “A free solution like Norton Online Family is a great tool to help parents continue a healthy dialogue with their kids about not only their favourite sources of entertainment, but also what constitutes safe behaviour online.”
