(Seoul – March 23, 2011) GomTV, Blizzard Entertainment’s exclusive eSports and broadcasting partner in Korea, announced that the 2011 LG Cinema3D GSL(Global StarCraft® II League) World Championship Seoul will kick off with the opening game on March 28th.

The LG Cinema3D GSL World Championship is one of annual leagues of 2011 GSL Tour, which Gom TV hosts, and features Blizzard Entertainment’s real-time strategy game <StarCraft® II: The Wings of Liberty>. The LG Cinema3D GSL World Championship will hold a series of tournaments where world-class 16 players including 8 Korean top players and 8 international top players will participate from March 28th to April 9th.

In line to GomTV signing an MOU with LG Electronics on March 17, the LG Electronics will participate in this World Championship as the title sponsor, and thereby confirming the official league title as “2011 LG Cinema3D GSL World Championship Seoul.”

Entry of 8 players representing Korea was selected based on player’s total ranking points accumulated from the 2011 GSL Mar. and players including Min-chul Jang (MC), with the highest point, Jong-hyun Jung (Mvp), Jung-hun Lee (MarineKing), Jae-duk Im (Nestea), Sung-jun Park (July), Yoon-yeol Lee (NaDa), Jeong-whan Lee (anypro), and Cho-won Kang (sanZenith) will play in this tournament.

Entry of 8 international players was selected based on international leagues and regional preliminaries results. Two players each from Asia/Oceania and North America will join, together with four players from Europe, including Jonathan Walsh (Jinro) and Stephan Anderson (Morrow), representative players of Europe. Two Ukraine players, Dmytro Filipchuk (Dimaga) and Alesksey Krupnyk (White-ra), will also participate from Europe.

Yang Chia Cheng (Sen) from Taiwan, who won the Asia regional final; Andrew Pender (mOOnGLaDe), will be participating to represent Oceania; and Chris Loranger (Huk), who is participating in the current GSL; and Payam Toghyan (TT1) will also visit Korea as representatives of North America region to participate in the LG Cinema3D GSL World Championship.

The LG Cinema3D GSL World Championship will kick off with a special event match, World Team League, on the 29th. Here, the Korean team, consisting all participating 8 Korean players, will compete against the international team of all 8 foreign players. In the World Team League, a player will compete against the opponent and try to achieve consecutive wins until all players in the other team are defeated. Eventually, the team that achieves 8 victories will win the league. This unique concept – Korea vs. the rest of the world – and the exciting special event match is gathering much attention from eSports fans around the world.

The bracket for the main LG Cinema3D GSL World Championship will be randomly matched regardless of each player’s region. Players competing in the Round of 16 will advance after best-of-three matches; Round of 8 and 4 after best-of-five matches; then final match after best-of-seven match.

The total prize money amounts to about $100,000 – the 1st place winner will win $30,000 and the runner-up will receive $15,000.

In addition, GomTV will hold the “Japan Earthquake Supporting Campaign” with eSports fans around the world. GomTV will provide premium live broadcasting and VOD service for free during the World Championship, and induce eSports fans around the world to donate. GomTV will also plan various fund-raising campaigns with Korean eSports fans and deliver warm relief messages to Japan.

Nintendo Australia announces that within one week of Pokémon™ Black Version and Pokémon White Version hitting Australian shelves on 10 March 2011, combined sales exceeded 77,000* units – smashing all previous records for week one sales of a Nintendo game in Australia.

The previous Australian Pokémon release of Pokémon HeartGold Version and Pokémon SoulSilver Version, sold a combined total of more than 45,000 units in week one of sales. New SUPER MARIO BROS.™ Wii sold through more than 47,400 in week one in November 2009. This makes the release of Pokémon Black Version and Pokémon White Version the biggest selling week one release of any Nintendo game, across any Nintendo console in the history of Nintendo in Australia. This takes total sales of all Pokémon games in Australia to more than 3 million units.

Family of twelve moves into Scienceworks’ Amazing Backyard!

A family of twelve phasmids – or stick insects as they are more commonly known – have made themselves at home in Scienceworks’ new exhibition Amazing Backyard Adventures, which officially opened to the public on Saturday.

A lucky pair of students from Spotswood Primary students were able to see the new residents up close as Scienceworks’ staff replaced branches in the display case where the insects are housed.   

The phasmids were brought to their new home by Museum Victoria’s Live Exhibits team and are on display at Scienceworks as one of many examples of the amazing biodiversity that can be seen in our backyards.

 

“Stick insects are a little more difficult to spot in the average backyard than other creatures as they are natural masters of camouflage,” said Patrick Honan, Manager Live Exhibits, Museum Victoria.

“But there are plenty of other vertebrates and invertebrates that inhabit the humble Australian backyard, and indeed backyards around the world.” 

Aimed at children from 5 to 12 years of age, Amazing Backyard Adventures gives families the chance to explore the science that can be found just outside the back door through a series of fun and interactive displays.

“Visitors to Scienceworks will discover a hidden world they may not have previously known even existed, literally right there in their own backyards,” said Genevieve Fahey, Manager of Scienceworks.

“Children can experience what the garden looks like through the eyes of a bee or a dog, and walk through a magnified version of the garden lawn as though they are the size of a small insect.

“Little ones will be able to explore the exhibition from an entirely different perspective, by dressing up in costume to play the part of a frog or spider as they learn about every day science,”

People interested in “D-I-Y” will also have the chance to design their own environmentally friendly garden or create the perfect garden path.

“Whether through learning about how plants grow and change over the seasons or seeing how common animals and insects interact in the garden, Amazing Backyard Adventures is an exciting way to understand the science of everyday life,” said Fahey.

Amazing Backyard Adventures runs until July 24, and features 18 interactive exhibits with activities that include using night vision to uncover nocturnal residents, or seeing the world from the view of a bee flying through the garden in search of nectar.

Based on its industry-leading 25-nanometre (nm) NAND flash memory, the Intel SSD 320 replaces and builds on its high-performing Intel® X25-M SATA SSD. Delivering more performance and uniquely architected reliability features, the new Intel SSD 320 offers new higher capacity models, while taking advantage of cost benefits from its 25nm process with an up to 30 per cent price reduction over its current generation.

The Intel SSD 320 is the next generation of Intel’s client product line for use on desktop and notebook PCs. It is targeted for mainstream consumers, corporate IT or PC enthusiasts who would like a substantial performance boost over conventional mechanical hard disk drives (HDDs). An SSD is more rugged, uses less power and reduces the HDD bottleneck to speed PC processes such as boot up and the opening of files and favourite applications. In fact, an upgrade from an HDD to an Intel SSD can give users one of the single-best performance boosts, providing an up to 66 per cent gain in overall system responsiveness.1
