No Strings Attached comes to DVD and Blu-ray from June 9

The “Smart and Sexy” comedy No Strings Attached makes a date with DVD and Blu-ray from June 9th.

Academy Award ® Winner, Natalie Portman (Black Swan) and Ashton Kutcher (What Happens In Vegas) star in this refreshingly candid look at modern relationships. Directed by comedy legend Ivan Reitman (Ghostbusters, Twins, Six Days & Seven Nights), the film also features an outstanding supporting cast including Lake Bell (Children’s Hospital), Greta Gerwig (Greenberg), Kevin Kline (Definitely, Maybe), Ludacris (Law and Order: SVU), Cary Elwes (Saw) and Mindy Kaling (The Office).

Adam (Kutcher) and Emma  (Portman) never really had a “relationship”. A brief flirtation at school and a one night stand the night before Emma’s father’s funeral was pretty much the extent of it. But then, one night, after their third fling had flung, Adam and Emma realise that this thing they have going on, the carefree, no meeting the parent’s, no-asking-if-I-look-fat-in-this thing is exactly what they need. Emma, after all, is too busy with her medical studies to give her relationships the attention that they invariably require and Adam… well Adam is a guy. So there and then they strike a deal. All sex, zero relationship, no strings attached.

The No Strings Attached DVD and Blu-Ray boasts nearly an hour of bonus material including featurettes about sex friends getting together, the do’s and don’ts of modern love, deleted scenes, commentary from Ivan Reitman and more.

Program Publicity: murundak – songs of freedom

A journey into the heart of Aboriginal protest music featuring the Black Arm Band

Saturday 28 May at 10.05pm, SBS ONE

“It’s a film for all Australians and judging from the response to the London concert, it reaches way beyond our shores. If you get a chance to see it, grab it. I’m giving it 4 and half stars.” – Margaret Pomeranz, At The Movies

murundak – songs of freedom is a two hour, musical documentary film that follows the award-winning Black Arm Band, a gathering of some of Australia’s finest Indigenous musicians, as they take to the road with their songs of resistance and freedom.

From the concert halls of the Sydney Opera House to remote Aboriginal communities of the Northern Territory, murundak – meaning ‘alive’ in Woirurrung language – brings together pioneering singers such as Archie Roach, Bart Willoughby, Jimmy Little, Kutcha Edwards and the late great Ruby Hunter, as well as a stellar line up of emerging Indigenous talent including Dan Sultan, Shellie Morris and Emma Donovan.

For generations, song has formed a vital part of Aboriginal cultural life in which stories are kept alive through the song lines of older generations. Like the protest singers of the American civil rights movement and South Africa under Apartheid, Aboriginal people have drawn on the power of protest song to call for freedom and demand change in a country that is still struggling to reconcile its troubled past.

The first idea for the Black Arm Band was planted by Ruby Hunter in a back street in South Melbourne in 2004 when she suggested to her partner Archie Roach “we need an Aboriginal orchestra”. Following this idea, an ensemble of the original creative pioneers of Aboriginal contemporary music with some of the finest instrumentalists in the country was brought together under the cheeky moniker ‘The Black Arm Band’, referring to then Prime Minister John Howard’s use of the phrase the “black arm band view of history”. The inaugural show murundak was created soon after that.

murundak explores the need for Indigenous peoples to re-engage with their own culture and history. It delves into the personal stories of each member of The Black Arm Band with deeply personal profile interviews of the artists. It also includes rare archival news footage and songs from the late 1970s and early 1980s, when the protest movement was first ignited, before moving onto the reign of John Howard’s government and ending with Kevin Rudd’s Apology and its effect on the Indigenous psyche.

“The Black Arm Band reminds me of the long struggle and the long journey we’ve been on. 30 years ago we were marching for justice down the city streets, but now we’re telling our stories in the concert halls”. – Archie Roach, The Black Arm Band

Filmed against the backdrop of Australia’s changing political landscape, murundak charts the most significant events in Australian music history as the Black Arm Band sing up the country’s troubled past through their stories of sorrow, anger and hope.

KONAMI and Gaijin Entertainment take the chocks off stunning WWII combat epic

SYDNEY: 26 May, 2011- Konami Digital Entertainment GmbH has announced a stunning new blend of flight combat and battle theatre genres, with the advent of Birds of Steel for PlayStation®3 and Xbox 360® video game and entertainment system from Microsoft.

Developed by Gaijin Entertainment, Birds of Steel is a breath-taking combat simulator featuring some of the most pivotal air battles of World War II, including the battle of Midway, Guadalcanal, Coral Sea, the historic attack on Pearl Harbour, the Mediterranean Maltese island, Germany’s Ruhr Valley, and others. Players can select how detailed they want each campaign to be, and are offered a wealth of single and multi-player campaigns.

Birds of Steel offers 20 historical and a wealth of fictitious missions, spanning eight world-famous campaigns, and users are given access to over 100 famous planes from the entire axis and allied forces rosters. A number of planes ideal for each campaign can be selected, and have been faithfully recreated in terms of handling, capabilities and weaponry. The classic Spitfire, P-51D Mustangs, and Messerschmidt 109 are all lined up for combat, as players opt to player opt to fight for the Allies, Japanese or Axis forces.

The game features a breath-taking level of detail, with the weather effects of each war zone brilliantly brought to life, while the handling and battle-scarred planes are susceptible to damage and will suffer in terms of control accordingly. Similarly, a series of camera views allow users to witness their skills from a series of external views, or within the varied cockpits of the 100 planes. The missions are presented in a pre-conflict briefing, and players can also see how their contributions related to the overall path of the scenario, with new planes available on the completion of specific goals. Birds of Steel also offers the user a number of control systems, ranging from simplistic arcade-style movements, to entirely faithful control systems that offer total control over every aspect of flight.

Gaijin are busy creating a series of absorbing missions for online users, with team death matches, co-op strike missions, airfield raids, and tournament play all set to throw open the skies for the most intense aerial combat ever to grace the PlayStation®3 and Xbox 360 systems. Squadrons can even edit their finest hours to showcase their skills, and share them with their peers.

“For far too long, first-person shooter fans have been tied to the foot soldier point of view, but we aim to bring the seat-of-their-pants skill and daring of dogfighting and aerial combat to a wider audience,” said Martin Schneider, General Manager, Konami Digital Entertainment GmbH. “Birds of Steel pushes the throttle of realism by giving fans what they’ve been missing when it comes to co-operative online gameplay, incredibly realistic visuals and game dynamics, while spanning the entirety of the war’s air campaigns.”

Museum Victoria wins Gold in Houston

Museum Victoria has been recognised for the use of cutting-edge new technology in exhibition design with an American Association of Museums Gold MUSE Award.

Premier and Minister for the Arts Ted Baillieu said this year’s award follows a win at the MUSE awards in 2010 for the development of new exhibition technology used in Wild: Amazing Animals in a Changing World.

“It is wonderful that Museum Victoria has taken out the top award again this year, beating out hundreds of entries from major museums and art galleries all over the world,” Mr Baillieu said.

“This award recognises the global leadership of Museum Victoria in the development of new interactive technologies.”

“Museum Victoria is constantly finding new and interesting ways for visitors of all ages to engage with our collections and exhibitions,” said Dr. Patrick Greene, CEO, Museum Victoria. “We are delighted to receive global recognition for our innovative use of multimedia technology in exhibitions”.

The MUSE Awards were presented on Sunday night, 22 May (US time) in Houston, Texas as part of the American Association of Museums Annual Conference. The awards receive entries from major museums and art galleries from all over the world. Museum Victoria received the Gold MUSE award for its Rio Tinto Volcanic 3D in AVIE by iCinema UNSW, a state-of-the-art 360-degree fully immersive and interactive 3D cinema exhibit in the Dynamic Earth exhibition at Melbourne Museum.

“In Volcanic 3D, visitors can experience being surrounded by an active volcano, travelling down a lava tunnel and journeying under the sea. This new technology provides a stimulating and enjoyable way to access additional information about the geological processes of the Earth,” said Dr Greene.

Dynamic Earth reveals the powerful forces that fuel volcanic eruptions, cause earthquakes and create thousands of different minerals, gems, and precious metals. The exhibition demonstrates the natural processes that shape our planet and explores what rocks and minerals can tell us about the Earth’s history.

Inside Volcanic 3D, visitors can experience scientifically accurate computer animations of a variety of volcanic activities. The computer animations are projected on the inside of a cylindrical screen by 12 projectors creating a seamless 360-degree image. Visitors interact with the animation by standing on glowing circles scattered throughout the space. These activate video and animations providing further information on the geological phenomenon.

“When you walk through Dynamic Earth you regularly hear the excitement of visitors inside Volcanic 3D” said Kathy Fox, Exhibition Producer. “It is the closest thing to a live active volcano.”

Museum Victoria prides itself on the collaborations it establishes to produce innovative exhibits like the Rio Tinto Volcanic 3D in AVIE by iCinema UNSW. Museum staff worked closely with the team behind AVIE from iCinema at the University of New South Wales, as well as creative Victorian companies Act3Animation who designed the incredible visuals; and Wax Sound Media for their intense 12-channel surround sound design. This groundbreaking project was made possible with the generous support of Rio Tinto.

Dynamic Earth is the final phase of the redevelopment of Melbourne Museum’s Science and Life Gallery. The completed redevelopment is the most comprehensive natural science display in any Australian museum and features more than 3,000 objects from the Museum’s collections, many on display for the first time.

The MUSE Awards are open to member institutions from across the world that use digital media to enhance the museum experience and engage new audiences; celebrating innovation, creativity and inclusivity.
