PLAYSTATION®3 AFFIRMS LEAD 2012 SALES POSITION ON THE EVE OF A NEW CONSOLE LAUNCH IN AUSTRALIA

Sydney, September 24, 2012Sony Computer Entertainment Australia (SCE Aust.) officially launched its holiday games line up today, at a showcase event headlined by the local release of its highly anticipated new PlayStation®3 (PS3™), out this week.

The new, smaller and lighter PS3 models arrive on shelves nationally this Thursday September 27, and launches during a time of significant Australian commitment to the PlayStation® brand.

In a challenging climate, where the Australian interactive games industry was down in value for the first half of 2012, official NPD Group Australia data revealed that PlayStation 3 had achieved number one console sales position for the first half of the calendar year. Additionally, PS3 was the only games console in the Australian market to achieve double digit unit sales growth, year-on-year over the same period. PlayStation `hardware family’ combined – including PS3, PSP (PlayStation®Portable) and the recent release of PlayStation®Vita (PS Vita™) – accounted for a large 43% share of the hardware value derived within the Australian retail interactive games industry for the first six months of 2012.

Michael Ephraim, Managing Director, Sony Computer Entertainment Australia said: “PlayStation sales in Australia are powering on, and that’s before the introduction of the new, more affordable PlayStation 3 this week. When you combine the great new PS3 form factor, our new Essentials value games range, an incredible line-up of blockbuster games content plus new innovation like Wonderbook™, this will further our momentum into this summer holiday season.”

At today’s showcase, PlayStation also revealed a first-look at its innovative new peripheral, Wonderbook.  Taking augmented reality to spectacular new heights, Wonderbook launches in Australia this November with a new title called Wonderbook™: Book of Spells, which features new and original writing from JK Rowling.

Wonderbook will be positioned at an attractive price point for every family. The new peripheral and Book of Spells game will be available priced at AUD$49.95 (RRP). A bundle that includes the peripheral, game, PlayStation®Move motion controller and PlayStation® Eye camera will also be available for AUD$99.95 (RRP).

Sony Computer Entertainment is already working with some of the world’s leading creators and developers to produce a variety of games content for Wonderbook.

Cross platform game play experiences between PS3 and PS Vita devices were also showcased at the event with the upcoming title, PlayStation® All-Stars: Battle Royale™ scheduled for a November 22 release nationally.

St John Ambulance’s ‘Responder App’ wins Vodafone Foundation’s charity App challenge

First place: App to help save lives
Second place: App to feed more disadvantaged

SYDNEY, AUSTRALIA, Sunday 23 September, 2012: The Vodafone Foundation is pleased to announce St John Ambulance NSW has clinched first place in its App Aid charity challenge. The charity has been awarded a $30,000 donation for its ‘Responder App’ – a smartphone app to support volunteers when responding to emergency situations. With just a few taps of the app, volunteers will be able to access essential information quickly when they are out in the field, including patient guides and checklists.

Oz Harvest claimed second place in App Aid with its pioneering app to help tackle food waste in Australia. The Vodafone Foundation awarded the charity with a $10,000 donation for its ingenious app allowing restaurants and cafes to notify OzHarvest when they have available food for rescue in real time. OzHarvest can then collect more food in a timely manner in order to feed more disadvantaged people.

St John Ambulance and OzHarvest were two of ten charities that signed up for the App Aid challenge, which connected charities with volunteer App developers. Participants were tasked with the daunting challenge of building an App from scratch in just 48 hours.

And if the task of designing and building an App in two sleepless days sounds overwhelming, try then having to having to front Silicon-Valley heavy weight and former chief evangelist of Apple, Guy Kawasaki, in a Dragons’ Den inspired pitch, as part of the unique charity initiative.

All ten participating charities rose to the challenge of pitching their App prototypes to the Silicon Valley legend. The charity app presented ranged from facilitating donations, fostering volunteering, entertaining seriously ill kids and finding homes for pets, with Guy Kawasaki praising their achievements. “Some of the ideas presented to our judging panel at App Aid have been on par with what I’ve seen in Silicon Valley.”

But, at the conclusion of the 48 hour event, one charity team stood out in the eyes of the judging panel.

“St John Ambulance proved to our panel that their idea could assist in saving lives on a state and a national level. The passion from the winning team was clearly demonstrated through their inspiring and convincing pitch,” said Guy Kawasaki.

First place: ‘Responder App’, St John Ambulance NSW, by app developer goCatch.com.au

The devised app is to support St Johns’ Ambulance NSW volunteers when they are out in the field by providing them with access to necessary information including tips, checklists and patient treatment guides to assist in emergency treatment.

Responder app uses the GPS capability of the iPhone to show where an emergency is located on a map. Crucial information about the status and nature of the emergency can be shared through the entire St John organisation allowing logistical response to be optimised.

Second place: ‘OzHarvest App’, OzHarvest, by Stuart Hall, Samuel Cochran and Simon Seeber

The pioneering app aims to allow more restaurants and cafes to notify OzHarvest when they have food available for rescue so they can plan and coordinate the process of food rescues in real time, in order to maximise the benefit of thousands of recipients.

Quotes:

Guy Kawasaki, Former Apple Evangelist, on first place App

“The concepts produced for App Aid were so impressive considering they only had 48 hours to come up with an idea. St John Ambulance proved to our panel that their idea could assist in saving lives on a state and a national level. The passion from the winning team was clearly demonstrated through their inspiring and convincing pitch.”

Guy Kawasaki on second place App

“Some of the ideas presented to our judging panel at App Aid have been on par with what I’ve seen in Silicon Valley. OzHarvest also produced an appealing and practical app concept. Their idea translated well, and I’m looking forward to seeing the the idea come to life.”

Ronnie Kahn, Founding Director of OzHarvest

“What an extraordinary concept that The Vodafone Foundation came up with, The initiative engaged volunteers in the most amazing way and provided an incredibly useful tool for the community. We are proud to have been recognised and believe it will make a significant difference to OzHarvest.”

Ilan Lowbeer, State Support Services Officer, St John Ambulance NSW

“To win App Aid feels amazing. I’m extremely overwhelmed and humbled to be recognised for our idea. Through our app we will be able to target the volunteering community in a unique and engaging way.”

Jason MacLulich, Head of goCatch.com.au

“We feel very privileged to be a part of the winning team at App Aid. It was a great experience to support a charity that we have such a strong alignment with.”

Demelza Farr, Head of Vodafone Foundation

“We were absolutely overwhelmed with the magnitude of innovation that was demonstrated through the ideas presented at App Aid. While there were so many fantastic ideas, the stand out was St John Ambulance, but beyond that it was great to see a strong comradery between the charities”, said Demelza Farr, Head of Vodafone Foundation and Judge of App Aid.

“We received over 150 entries from Australian charities keen to participate in App Aid. To have that many reputable NGOs eager to participate in this completely new and strange world of software development, and to put themselves through 48 gruelling hours, really demonstrates how Australian charities are finding the need to turn to apps to reach their communities in a new and relevant way.”

“Technology is changing the way NGOs work. There is this new gravity towards using mobile to overcome humanitarian challenges. Technology is being used to connect families from disaster, empower health workers with data to help combat disease, track the impacts of climate change and so much more. Our goal with App Aid is to spur mobile innovation to help solve some of the challenges faced by charities and their communities,” Demelza continues.

Shifting World is brought to European shores through reputable distributor Rising Star Games.

“We are very proud to bring the Shift franchise to a Nintendo platform, and we truly believe we have done the 3DS justice by exploiting its best features in this Shifting World opus. We’re also excited to team up with a savvy publisher such as Rising Star Games for distribution of the title across Europe.”, stated Bruno Urbain, Studio Manager at Fishing Cactus.

Cross Fire Introduces Crater, the Fifth Chapter to the Popular Co-Op Zombie Mode

Event Introduces New Zone, Challenging End-boss Battle and For the First Time, Stationary Weapon Emplacements

Toronto, CANADASeptember 20, 2012 – G4BOX Inc., a North American publisher and distributor of interactive online entertainment media, introduced a fifth addition to Cross Fire’s fast-paced co-operative Zombie Mode: the Crater. Included in the game’s most recent update, the Crater is a co-operative challenge where gamers fend off wave-after-wave of reanimated soldiers, genetic mutations and military experiments gone awry, concluding in facing-off against an all new boss encounter, the Mega Warmonger.

“We’re always looking to create a more exciting and frantic game experience within Cross Fire, and the new Crater map in the Zombie Mode will do exactly that,” said JT Hwang, producer of Cross Fire. “This new map has multiple levels, obstructions and hordes of mutant and undead soldiers for players to decimate with all the tools in their arsenal. The action never lets up, not even when the Warmonger makes himself known.”

The Crater takes place in what was once a hidden underground military laboratory now exposed to the Chicago city streets, thanks to a devastating explosion you and your team barely survived. Trapped within the mixture of damaged sewer pipes, fallen roadway and half-toppled building debris, gamers must fight off increasing waves of enemies using a complement of real-world weaponry.

Supporting up to four players at once, teams have a new weapon at their disposal in Crater, the new stationary weapon emplacement. Able to chew-up multiple enemies at will, players have to be strategic with this new game mechanic since players will have limited ammunition and no mobility while raining automatic death from above. Gamers will need this edge because a nasty surprise waits for them in the form of the Warmonger, a ten-foot-tall military-grade mutant, who’s armed to the teeth and just as deadly up close.

Cross Fire is a fast-paced military-themed combat online shooter, pitting two competing mercenary forces, the Global Risk and the Black List, against each other in a war-torn world. Players can choose from a massive armory of realistic firearms, explosives, hand-to-hand weapons and personal body armor used by military forces worldwide. Single and unit-based combat scenarios and location-specific damage combined with popular movie culture create adrenaline-fueled action-packed battles in 10 different gameplay modes: Free-for-All, Escape, Mutation, Team Death Match, Elimination, Search and Destroy, Mutation, Ghost, Zombie and Predator. Developed by SmileGate, Cross Fire is the largest first-person online shooter in the world with more than 3.7 million concurrent users globally.
