Mobile banking to be future goldmine for cybercriminals

– Online banking on a smartphone and fake advertisements on social networks are two of the latest trends in consumer-targeted security threats, reveals AVG Q3 Threat Report –

MELBOURNE and AMSTERDAM – 25 October 2012 – Consumers who use their smartphones to access online banking services are among the latest targets for cybercriminals, according to the AVG Technologies Q3 Community Powered Threat Report. AVG Technologies (NYSE: AVG), the provider of Internet and mobile security to 128 million active users, today released its Q3 2012 Community Powered Threat Report which shows how opportunistic hackers are tailoring malware known as Zitmo (or Zeus-in-the-Mobile). This turns the smartphones of unsuspecting consumers into botnets, enabling cybercriminals to steal their online banking credentials and empty their bank accounts.

A 2012 PriceWaterhouseCoopers’ report projected that digital banking would become the norm globally by 2015. In Australia, the Big Four banks processed $10 billion in July alone from smartphone banking.   Zeus-on-PC malware was originally created to steal details from people’s computers. AVG has been tracking its evolution and has identified how hackers are exploiting the growth in mobile banking by releasing Zitmo for mobile platforms, notably Android, in very controlled attacks.

Currently, Zitmo is targeting Android mobile users in Germany. The attack exploits the two-factor authentication process many banks have put in place to protect their customers including the traditional user/password authentication and a Transaction Authentication Number (TAN), which is sent as a text message to the user’s mobile device. Zitmo intercepts this communication and harvests the details in order to gain access to user bank accounts.

Consumers using social networks were also hit this quarter by an explosion of attacks using the notorious Blackhole Exploit kit that targeted popular social networks including Facebook. The attack left users unable to log-on to their accounts or access any games or applications as cybercriminals coordinated the attacks from multiple external advertising servers, which generated an exceptional increase from 250,000 attacks to over 1.6m recorded events within an eight hour period. Again, those consumers with the latest PC and smartphone security software were protected.

“Zitmo is not new malware as such; but the new ways in which we are seeing cybercriminals use it underlines this worrying trend of socially engineering security attacks to match evolving consumer habits,” said Michael McKinnon, Security Advisor at AVG Technologies AU. “We always recommend consumers exercise care when sourcing and downloading apps onto their smartphones, as unofficial third party sites are usually the best places for cybercriminals to seed malware-ridden versions of popular apps. People get caught out because they cannot tell if they have the malware on their phone, so it’s best to install mobile security software and keep it updated in order to have peace of mind when using mobile banking and social networking services.”

Not all spider bites are AMAZING!

Summer is nearly upon us – a time when we naturally spend more time outside and as such, have the potential to be exposed to some pretty dangerous spiders.  But unlike Peter Parker’s experience in The Amazing Spider-man, being bitten by a spider doesn’t always give you super powers!

Celebrity Vet, Dr. Katrina Warren and Evan Armstrong, Arachnid Expert at Wild Life Sydney Zoo have put together some hints and tips should you come into contact with these creepy crawlies this summer:

SPIDER FACTS

  • Most dangerous spiders:
    • Funnel-Web spiders and Red Back spiders.
  • Most poisonous spiders:
    • The Funnel-Web and Red Back spiders are the most poisonous spiders.
    • There have been 13 deaths caused by Sydney Funnel-web bites.
    • Red Back spiders can cause serious illness and have caused deaths in the past.
    • There is now anti-venom available for both spiders, to prevent death, which can be given if quicklyrushed to hospital.
  • Where are these spiders most likely found:
    • Funnel-Web spiders are found at the bottom of swimming pools and can survive under water for 24-30 hours.  They are also found in backyards and bush land areas.
    • Red Back spiders are found around Aussie homes as we like the same kind of environments.  They build their webs on hard surfaces like rocks, concrete, bricks and event toilets.
  • Number of spider bites per year:
    • More than 250 cases of Red Back spider bites are reported each year.
    • 30-40 people are bitten by the Sydney Funnel-Web spider each year.

WHAT TO DO IF YOU’VE BEEN BITTEN

  • Most spider bites, including the Funnel-Web spider will require a pressure/immobilisation method of first aid which involves applying pressure to the bite to delay the absorption of the venom.
  • Red Back Spiders require an ice pack to be applied to the bitten area to relieve pain. Do not apply a pressure bandage (venom movement is slow and pressure worsens pain).
  • Take a picture of the spider so it can be easily identified and quickly rush to hospital to obtain the anti-venom.

TIPS TO AVOID BEING BITTEN:

  • Be cautious when gardening and wear gloves.
  • Never put your hands where they cannot be seen.
  • If boots or shoes are left outdoors makes sure you shake them before putting them on, as spiders oftenmake dark burrows their home.
  • Make sure the bottom of the swimming pool is clear before jumping in.

Keeping these spider danger tips top of mind will ensure that you and your family can enjoy the sunshine without any unexpected surprises.  However, if you want to see how AMAZING some spiders can be, just in time for Halloween, grab a copy of The Amazing Spider-man on 3D, Blu-ray or DVD from 31stOctober 2012.
