AUSSIE KIDS’ FAVOURITE TOY ‘SKYLANDERS’ REACHES MORE THAN $100 MILLION IN AUSTRALIA AND NEW ZEALAND SALES

Sydney, Australia, 5th August 2013: Just 18 months since launching, the Skylanders franchise exceeds the $100 million mark for sales in Australia and New Zealand.

Voted K-Zone magazine’s Toy of the Year for two consecutive years[1], Skylanders is yet again on its way to cementing its place as the hottest toy in town for 2013, with the next instalment in the franchise, Skylanders SWAP Force, set to launch later this year.

Skylanders toys outsold the #1 action figure line in Australia and New Zealand, sweeping aside giants of the toy industry Spiderman, Transformers and Star Wars. Additionally, Skylanders Giants eclipsed domestic box office sales for the top holiday kids feature films including “Ice Age 4” and “Madagascar 3.”

“Just over 18 months ago, bringing toys to life in a virtual world was an untested concept.  Now Skylanders is established in the Australian toy market and embraced by parents and kids across the world,” said Philip Earl, EVP Activision Publishing, Asia Pacific. “We’re thrilled to see Aussie kids embracing Skylanders toys and games both in the virtual and physical worlds.”

Fusing the physical world of toys with the virtual world of video games, Skylanders has ignited the imagination of millions of kids around the world with some great stats to prove it:

  • The amount of Skylanders toys sold globally in just 20 months is three times the Australian population[2]
  • If all of the Skylanders toys sold in Australia were lined up they would follow the course of the 1,170 km Sydney to Hobart Yacht Race[3]
  • The number of Skylanders toys sold in Australia and New Zealand exceed the population of New Zealand or the population of Sydney[4]

Sydney mum Kelly Drew has lost count of the number of Skylanders figurines her kids Finnegan, 7, and Mackenzie, 5, have amassed, but “it’s at least 50. I’m certainly no expert but each character belongs to an element and as you work through the game you need different elements to fight the baddies,” she said.

The only problem Finnegan had with the toys was that he was only allowed to play with them on the weekend. “I just like their powers and the look of them,” he said.

On 16th October, 2013 Activision will release the third instalment of the franchise Skylanders SWAP Force™ which introduces an innovative new feature – dynamic swapability.  Kids and gamers will have unprecedented levels of choice in how they explore Skylands and battle Kaos by swapping the top and bottom halves of the toys to transform 16 SWAP ForceTM characters into more than 250 unique combinations.

“What we saw at BIG W was that Skylanders really captured the imagination of children and our customers are telling us October’s release of Skylanders SWAP Force can’t come soon enough,” Said Big W head of general merchandise Georgia Sotiropoulos.

Skylanders SWAP Force is not yet rated by the Australian Classification Board. For more information, visit www.skylanders.com

Arma 3 lands new video on helicopters

Sydney, Australia – August 5, 2013 – After concluding the Arma 3 Alpha with a video SITREP, Bohemia Interactive today launched the second season of its Community Guide video series. In the new episode, which was released today, Andrew Gluck (better known as Dslyexci) from ShackTactical explores the principles of helicopter flight – focusing specifically on take-off, basic flight, weapons employment and landing.

Considered as one of the more challenging disciplines in Arma 3, the key to becoming a skilled Arma helicopter pilot is practice. For those who just started their training, the new video provides a number of tips on how to use the collective pitch, the rudders, and how to operate some of the basic weapons systems – all while enjoying a beautiful (cockpit) view of Altis, the 270 km² island featured in the full retail game.

The Community Guide videos aim to introduce players to the basics of Arma 3. The series opened with a more general introduction to Arma 3, whereas the second and third Community Guide took a closer look at infantry combat and multiplayer teamwork. The fourth video celebrated a milestone in development, as the game transitioned from Alpha to Beta.

Those who would like to take on helicopters can already participate in the Arma 3 Beta. The Arma 3 Beta and the Arma 3 Digital Deluxe Edition are available for purchase from Steam and Store.bistudio.com (both include a Steam version of the full retail game upon release). The price of each edition will increase once the full and final game becomes available.

‘PATRICK’ OFFICIAL TRAILER – Press Release

The official trailer for Australian suspense thriller PATRICK is launched today, ahead of the film’s theatrical release on 24 October 2013.

Directed by Mark Hartley (Not Quite Hollywood) and starring legendary actor Charles Dance (Game of Thrones, Alien 3), Golden Globe® winner and Academy Award® nominee Rachel Griffiths (Six Feet Under, Muriel’s Wedding), alongside Sharni Vinson (Bait 3D, You’re Next), Peta Sergeant (Iron Sky, Winners and Losers), and Damon Gameau (Save Your Legs, Balibo), PATRICK is a visceral, dramatic thriller centred on a young nurse who becomes the obsession of a comatose patient with telekinetic powers.

Produced by Antony I. Ginnane, PATRICK is a modern re-working of the 1978 classic cult film of the same name, brought to a new generation of psychological thriller fans.

Multiple ARIA award and AFI award winning director Mark Hartley has tapped into PATRICK’s cinematic past to create a moody, suspense driven film, accompanied by a lush score provided by legendary composer Pino Donaggio, who is well known for his music composition for Brian de Palma’s Carrie, Dressed to Kill, Body Double and Nicolas Roeg’s Don’t Look Now.

Director Mark Hartley said, “Our PATRICK is a throwback. It’s a gothic chiller – it’s the kind of film that really isn’t made in this country. The film announces that style from its first frame and first note of Donaggio’s orchestral score. I sincerely hope that audiences embrace its old school sensibility and go along for the ride.”

PATRICK will release in Australian cinemas nationally on 24 October 2013.

SYNOPSIS

After the mysterious disappearance of a nurse at a remote private clinic, Kathy (Sharni Vinson) takes up the vacant role at the mysterious ‘Roget Clinic’, a private hospital for the clinically comatose in a remote seaside town. Kathy is placed under the imperious watch of Matron Cassidy (Rachel Griffiths) and Dr. Sebastian Roget (Charles Dance) a renegade neurologist operating at the fringes of medical society.

Despite her strong sense of foreboding and the dismal working conditions, Kathy is desperate to take up the post and overlooks the eeriness of the ward and the disturbing patients that reside there. She is soon assigned to care for a mysterious coma patient, who is simply known to staff as Patrick. Before long it becomes apparent that Patrick’s affections for Kathy turn into a deadly and bloody obsession, letting no one get in his way.
