Malware to rise by 23 per cent in 2012, Bitdefender study shows

Malware to increase attacks on android, social networks

SYDNEY & AUCKLAND January 19, 2012 – Malware will expand by 23 per cent in 2012 to 90,000,000 samples, almost 17 million more than at the end of 2011, according to Bitdefender®, the award-winning provider of innovative antivirus solutions

The data forms part of E-Threats Landscape Report, which looks ahead at the expected evolution of malware in social media networks including Facebook and Twitter, on mobile devices, and the predicted overall growth of cyber crime.

The report is now available for download at http://www.bitdefender.com.au/news/#E-Threats Reports. It also predicts that much of the new malware and cyber fraud will focus on rapidly growing social networks in 2012, while malware for Android devices will significantly boost the number of threats to smartphones and tablets.

“The story of 2012 in terms of malware will be one of explosive growth, mostly because of the spread and growing allure of social networks,” said Bitdefender E-Threats Analyst Bogdan Botezatu, who coordinated the report. “Android malware will undergo exponential growth, but starting from a much lower base of malware samples.”

The Landscape Report, compiled from over a year of detection, prevention and removal worldwide, also includes a Top 10 overview of malware in 2011. It covers developments in hacktivism and abuse of digital certificates, and provides a breakdown of spam messages, which accounted for 75.1 per cent of all emails sent worldwide last year.

Kaspersky Lab Wins Product of the Year in AV-Comparatives’ Annual Awards

SYDNEY, Australia – 19 January 2012 – Kaspersky Lab has been awarded “Product of the Year” by the respected independent testing laboratory, AV-Comparatives, based on overall test results from 2011.

The award is based on the findings of nine different comparative tests of consumer anti-virus solutions conducted over the year, which in Kaspersky Lab’s case means two products – Kaspersky Anti-Virus and Kaspersky Internet Security. Significantly, Kaspersky Lab was the only participant to have been awarded the highest grade – Advanced+ – in all nine tests.

“What sets Kaspersky Lab apart from its competitors is the fact that our products provide superior detection rates and one of the industry’s fastest outbreak response times,” explains Andrew Mamonitis, Managing Director ANZ, Kaspersky Lab.

“Kaspersky Lab is using the most advanced and effective protection technologies to ensure customers are protected without having to become a computer expert. It’s about making our customers’ lives as simple as possible, while ensuring they have the best protection available.”

In deciding on the winner in the nomination of Product of the Year, AV-Comparatives’ experts evaluated solutions’ level of detection of malicious programs and effectiveness of heuristic algorithms, the number of false positives, resource usage, how well an infected system is treated, and effectiveness in “real-world” user scenarios. Each of these parameters was assessed objectively based on the results in the respective tests carried out during the year.

Throughout 2011 Kaspersky Lab products participated in nine comparative tests of either anti-virus solutions or Internet security suites. In each, the solutions’ different functional characteristics for protecting a computer from today’s threats were evaluated. In all tests both Kaspersky Lab solutions received Advanced+, with excellent results in the two principle indicators of any consumer security solution’s quality – effectiveness of malware detection and minimal false positives. AV-Comparatives also highly praised Kaspersky Lab’s products’ ability to fully cure systems infected with malware and their overall minimal resource usage. Consequently, for the third time in the history of the annual awards, Kaspersky Lab won Product of the Year.

Particular commendation in AV-Comparatives’ annual review report was reserved for Kaspersky Internet Security 2012. The review of the product highlighted its easy installation, its full operability in Windows’ safe mode, and the quality of online user support. The program’s new user interface and comprehensive technical documentation were also highly commended.

The full AV-Comparatives 2011 summary report can be found on the site of the testing laboratory.
