Lisbeth Salander-esque Mira Chambers returns in LEOPARD DREAMING

In a former life, native Queenslander A. A. Bell was a canny property investor who made her name as a bestselling author of personal finance books – a career that enabled her to retire debt-free at the enviable age of 26.

These days, however, she has established herself as a multiple award-winning author of speculative fiction thrillers. Her first foray into the genre in 2010 with Diamond Eyes introduced us to protagonist Mira Chambers. Reminiscent of Stieg Larsson’s Lisbeth Salander, Mira is a flawed genius who has been damaged by years of institutionalisation, but whom is also in possession of special gifts that give her an unusual talent for solving mysteries.

Astonishingly, Bell’s depiction of Mira’s blindness isn’t drawn from just her imagination – she is herself visually impaired, and has lived with eyesight difficulties for most of her life. Despite years of tests, specialists have been as yet unable to fully diagnose or rectify her problems, which means that Mira’s experiences are based on many very personal ones for the author.

LEOPARD DREAMING is the third book in this thrilling series. Upon finding herself cut off and alone for the first time in her life, Mira is swept into a world of conspiracies and betrayals, where her dream of achieving a normal life is constantly thwarted by the far darker desires of her enemies.
Layers of secrets unravel as her world falls apart – until the ultimate sacrifice presents a chance to save her friend and revisit her lost love.

About the author
A. A. Bell’s debut thriller DIAMOND EYES was Highly Commended in the 2008 FAW Jim Hamilton Award, and both it and its sequel HINDSIGHT won the prestigious Norma K Hemming in consecutive years (2011 and 2012). She has also published non-fiction bestsellers about finance. A. A. Bell lives near Brisbane with her partner and children.

Symantec Helps Businesses Accelerate Mobile Adoption by Enabling Developers to Build Trusted Enterprise Ready Apps

SYDNEY, Australia – October 10, 2012 – Symantec Corp. (NASDAQ: SYMC) today announced new offerings to help businesses accelerate their mobility initiatives. The offerings include two new programs – the App Center Ready Program designed to help developers rapidly build trusted enterprise apps with no code changes, and the Mobility Solution Specialisation Program for channel partners – as well as a single mobile suite spanning device management, application management and mobile security.

Businesses today are struggling to find the right approach and combination of technologies to realise the productivity benefits of mobility, without compromising protection of critical data. According to Symantec’s State of Mobility Survey , nearly half of the organisations surveyed (48 percent) see mobility as a challenge that requires effort to manage. Symantec is simplifying this process by working directly with app developers and implementation partners to create a developer program that businesses can rely upon. With these two programs and the industry’s most complete suite of enterprise mobility solutions, Symantec addresses all five critical areas of enterprise mobility – user and app access, app and data protection, device management, threat protection and secure file sharing.

“Organisations are looking for applications, partners and products they can depend on to confidently achieve their business objectives,” said Anil Chakravarthy, senior vice president, Enterprise Security Group, Symantec. “By consolidating our portfolio into one suite that is priced per user, not by device, we help IT organisations increase employee mobility and productivity without compromising protection with a straightforward, predictable deployment model. We are pleased to move to a licensing model that takes into account the reality companies are facing of two or more devices per employee.”

Enterprise Ready Trusted Mobile Apps
Symantec App Center Ready Program allows mobile application developers to embed Symantec’s security and management features, such as encryption, authentication, data loss prevention policies, app distribution and revocation, into their apps without changing their source code. IT organisations with Symantec App Center can now confidently deploy these apps across both iOS and Android platforms with the same level of management, protection and trust as in-house apps.

Mobile application developers in the program can accelerate adoption by addressing concerns around information security. Participating developers will speed up time to market by eliminating additional coding and gain visibility for their apps through Symantec’s App Center Ready catalogue, which lists all trusted apps certified by Symantec. Developers can now focus on the functionality of their apps to create a great user experience while taking full advantage of Symantec’s strengths in protection and management. The initial members of the program include popular business applications, such as Branchfire iAnnotate, Damaka Xavy, Emtrace MoxierMail, GoodReader, iKonic Apps, Infraware Polaris Office and Picsel SmartOffice.

Mobility Solution Specialisation for Channel Partners
Symantec is announcing a dedicated mobility channel specialisation program that will allow partners to offer Symantec’s enterprise mobility products to their customers. The Mobility Solution Specialisation will cover the full Symantec Mobile Management Suite and will provide partners with access to opportunity registration, expert resources, enablement programs, and accreditations in a multi-tier model.

Partners participating in Symantec’s Mobility Specialisation will be able to establish compelling practices around enabling mobility with an end-to-end solution. By allowing partners to solve complex, enterprise-class mobility initiatives instead of point projects, Symantec’s portfolio can lead to multiple opportunities for value-added services as well as sustainable revenue streams. This program will be available to channel partners globally by the end of 2012.

A Single Suite for Enterprise-wide Mobile Initiatives with User Based Pricing
Symantec is also announcing the availability of Symantec Mobile Management Suite, a single solution that covers mobile device management, mobile application management and mobile security. This new suite can be deployed on a per-user meter with both subscription and perpetual pricing models. The suite supports the major platforms, including iOS 6, Android 4.1 and Windows Phone 7.5, and features integrations with Symantec Endpoint Management and Microsoft System Center Configuration Manager deployments. It also features new enhancements, such as application blacklisting, email access control and compliance management.

Whether organisations want to enable mobile email or take advantage of mobile applications and content, Symantec Mobile Management Suite provides the most complete solution to support diverse use cases in personally owned, corporate owned and hybrid deployments. As more and more employees carry multiple smartphones and tablets, Symantec’s new pricing and licensing model simplifies enterprise procurement, renewal and auditing processes and helps regain control over the rising costs of enabling user mobility.

Strong Authentication Made Easy
In addition to the new programs and suite, Symantec is announcing a new Android app for Symantec Managed PKI to transparently issue digital certificates to Android phones and tablets and make it easier to manage them.  Companies can automate certificate enrolment, updates and revocation, and lower management costs. The Symantec Managed PKI client for Android, along with capabilities for other mobile platforms such as Apple iOS, Mac and Windows, help organisations increase their productivity and embrace BYOD initiatives with advanced device and user authentication.

Supporting Quotes
“Symantec’s mobile solutions enable us to focus on our key objectives by addressing our security and management needs. We have much greater visibility into our entire inventory of iPads and the apps they carry. With a click of a mouse, I’m able to see what technicians have done on each device and what apps are deployed. Managing app clutter has become increasingly important as more apps are downloaded onto our devices.” – D. Patches Hill, Technology Systems Manager, Indian River School District

“As mobile app developers, we’re regularly fielding requests from enterprises that want to increase their workforce’s productivity through the capabilities of iAnnotate. At the same time, they want assurances that the app will function according to their policies. This creates pressure for organisations as they think about secure deployment and policy compliance, and pressure for us as an ISV to respond to their evolving needs. Symantec’s App Center Ready Program simplifies our development efforts by providing an easy way to integrate Symantec’s strong background in protection and control into our apps, and in turn allows us to be more responsive to a varied set of customer requests around security, deployment and app management.” – Ashish Vora, Director of Business Development, Branchfire

“Our customers are facing mobility challenges, such as BYOD, and trying to understand how to enable and manage disparate mobile devices securely. With the Symantec Mobility Solution Specialisation, we now have a program that combines relevant mobile management and mobile security technology requirements into one expertise that enables us to help our customers across Symantec’s broad mobile portfolio. By working with Symantec specialists, we will be able to better enable our customers to more quickly and confidently deploy their mobile visions.” – Jason Livingston, Managing Director, Intuitive Technology Group

“With the increase of BYOD and mobile application programs, IT departments are looking for secure and efficient ways to enable mobility. They need tools to help them deal with various use cases to achieve a comfortable level of control over the devices, applications and data, all without trampling on device ease of use and user productivity. The need for such tools is only going to increase as workforces become more mobile.” – Stacy Crook, Sr. Analyst, Mobile Enterprise Research at IDC

Teenage boys face more online monitoring by parents than girls

Back to school days marks surge in parent monitoring

SYDNEY & AUCKLAND October 10, 2012 – Teenage boys are more likely than girls to be monitored by parents on Facebook, according to a three-month study by Bitdefender, the award-winning provider of innovative antivirus solutions.

Parents are 50 per cent more likely to monitor the Facebook account of boys between the ages of 13 and 17 than girls of the same age, according to the study on more than 1,600 volunteers. The data also shows the rate of monitoring spikes upward in the back-to-school season, when boys face an even greater level of scrutiny in comparison to girls. In September, boys are 60 per cent more likely to have their Facebook accounts monitored than are girls.

“It may seem counterintuitive but our research shows parents are more protective of boys online than girls,” said Bitdefender Chief Security Researcher, Catalin Cosoi. “This is possibly a result of the perception that boys engage in more risky behaviour online than girls. Cyber-bullying and cyber-baiting, a new trend that humiliates teachers through sharing of videos posted online, are also more commonly associated with masculine behaviour. At the same time, our data shows girls and women are more cautious about communicating with strangers on line, perhaps earning greater trust from their parents.”

The recently launched Bitdefender Total Security 2013 and Bitdefender Internet Security 2013 include Parental Control that allows parents to protect their children by checking up on their use of an Internet-connected device. Facebook monitoring helps parents keep an eye on social accounts with their kids’ consent, but without being necessarily in the friends’ list. It also allows them to receive extensive reports on comments, posts, photos, and children’s main interests.

Note to editors:

The article’s conclusions are based on a study between 15 June 2012 and 30 September 2012 with a sampling of 1,605 people.
