New study finds discarded data a threat

A study sponsored by Sims Lifecycle Services and carried out by the forensic computer laboratory of Glamorgah in Wales and Edith Cowan University in Wales and Edith Cowan University in Australia has revealed 34% of discarded hard drives still contain confidential data.

•        A disk bought on eBay revealed details of test launch procedures for the THAAD (Terminal High Altitude Area Defence) ground to air missile defence system, including security policies, blueprints of facilities and personal information on employees.

Kumar Radhakrishnan of Sims Recycling Solutions, who provide secure data destruction as part of their global electronic asset recovery business said:  “it is clear from the sensitive information revealed by this study that a wide range of organisations, businesses and individuals all over the world are failing in their duty to properly manage sensitive data when their IT equipment passes outside of their control.

It is vital to realise that residual data can still be accessed years after the equipment has been discarded and in the wrong hands could have not only financial consequences but potential implications for national security.

Quark sets its designs on the future of Australian publishing RMIT’s International Centre of Graphic Technology signs up to new education program

12 May 2009, Sydney – Quark Pacific today announced the launch of the Quark Education Program which will see the Company invest in the education of design and print students in Australia and New Zealand.

The Education Program was created following extensive consultation with educational institutions and the design and printing industry.  Key features of the Program include unlimited use of QuarkXPress 8 within the educational institution; and a full version of QuarkXPress 8 for each student enrolled in a design/graphic technology course. In addition to the unlimited licensing, Quark will also provide training for both teachers and enrolled students, as well as sharing QuarkXPress 8 educational material to assist the teachers with the preparation of their teaching syllabus.

The program is considered to be one of the most aggressive educational offerings, with all licensing and training being provided for a single annual fee.

The International Centre of Graphic Technology (ICGT), part of RMIT University’s School of Design (TAFE), is the first Australian Educational Institute to sign-up to the program.  The ICGT is the primary provider of formal education and training in graphic technologies in Victoria, including graphic pre-press, printing, print finishing and multimedia.  It has a broad range of courses; from entry-level Certificate II courses, through to advanced diplomas and associate degree.

Commenting on the partnership, John Magnik, Programs Director for the ICGT, said: “The Education Program is a fantastic opportunity for the ICGT to cost-effectively broaden Quark training programs and deliver further value to students.

“However, the attractiveness of the Program was not the primary reason for the ICGT’s participation.  The two key elements regarding our decision to be involved with the program were the quality of the product and the new-found responsiveness and attitude of Quark.

“QuarkXPress 8 is a very impressive product and I am getting positive feedback from the teachers regarding the design control and usability of the product. Additionally, some of the new functionality such as the ability to re-purpose print designs to the web will complement our Graphic Technology teaching, and will provide new creative options for our students,” continued Mr Magnik.

“As teachers, we are keen to ensure our students have the skills they need to enter the global workforce.  The ICGT believes that by increasing our commitment to Quark training, our graduates will be at the forefront of the Graphic Technology industry,” Mr Magnik concluded.

Quark Regional Business Director Alex Nemeth said the Company is committed to a collaborative and long-term partnership with educational institutions in Australia and New Zealand.

“The Education Program represents a true partnership between Quark and leading educational institutions.  We listened to what the educators told us and then developed a program to meet these needs.  The fact that the Program requires a significant investment from Quark is evidence of our commitment to building a strong foundation for the future.

“We look forward to working with RMIT ICGT and other Program partners to educate and inspire a new generation of QuarkXPress users,” said Mr Nemeth.

The Education Program is open to Universities, TAFE’s and Private Colleges, as well as artistic and creative high schools.

Messi brought to vivid life in PES 2010 – Konami showcases massively enhanced graphics engine as PES revamp continues apace

Konami Digital Entertainment GmbH has released the first in-game image of its forthcoming PES 2010 title, demonstrating the stunning new level of detail and graphical refinement the new game enjoys.

The work in progress image shows cover star Lionel Messi in action in the new game, and showcase a massive advance in aesthetic detail. Crucial to the new game’s look are all-new dynamic lighting effects, where the position of the sun or the illumination from the floodlights is reflected in real time within the shadows cast both on the pitch, stadium, the ball and players.

The newly-expanded Tokyo-based PES Productions team has also worked hard to create the most vivid player recreations to date. Player expressions are now fully implemented, while the level of detail has been extended to individual skin textures and different weaves for the various kits to mimic the breathable material so many manufacturers now use.

Further details will be released in the coming weeks.
