Kaspersky Lab Launches E-mail ‘Hotline’ for Duqu Victims

The recent outbreak of the Duqu Trojan, a sibling of the infamous Stuxnet industrial malware, has become yet another example of a highly sophisticated cybercriminal act. The analysis carried out by Kaspersky Lab’s experts has proven that Duqu was used as a weapon for targeted attacks on certain businesses; as such, every single Duqu infection is no mere accident. In a move to aid Duqu analysis and treatment, Kaspersky Lab has set up a special e-mail address which companies and individuals can use to contact the company’s experts and request help in investigating an infection with Duqu.

The stopduqu@kaspersky.com e-mail is a digital hotline for those who may discover a Duqu infection on their PC. It is important to understand that the “remediate and forget” approach does not work for Duqu. Any infection attempt signals that it was important for cybercriminals to gain control over a certain system, so there’d be a high chance of repeated attacks using various other methods. By contacting Kaspersky Lab businesses and individuals can ensure the safety of their sensitive data.

The recent Duqu-related discoveries by Kaspersky Lab’s experts have revealed its method of infection, which was previously unknown. It turns out that the Trojan’s penetration method made use of carefully tailored socially-engineered e-mails. These e-mails contain a Word .doc file that exploits a zero-day vulnerability in Microsoft Windows’ font-parsing engine. Although the permanent fix for this vulnerability is yet to be released by Microsoft, Kaspersky Lab’s security products already detect and block the exploits using this security hole as well as all known modifications of Duqu itself.

In the latest update on Duqu analysis, the Trojan’s driver – the first component to be loaded in the system – is described. The method of how it contacts the command and control server is also revealed, as well as the fact that the payload DLL – another component of Duqu – is able to connect to network shares and even become a control server for other machines. Kaspersky Lab’s experts will continue their analysis of the complex structure of the payload, which has, among other features, a special functionality for stealing sensitive data.

Detailed results of the Duqu analysis update are available here at Securelist.

Sydney, Australia: November 22, 2011 – Cooler Master, an industry leading chassis, thermal solution, peripheral, and accessory manufacturer, is proud to announce a world’s first in power supply technologies, the Silent Pro Hybrid Series. Equipped with fully modular cables, centralized control of power supply and system fans, a noise-free operation mode, and an included 5.25” drive bay fan controller module, the Silent Pro Hybrid Series becomes the industry benchmark to aspire to.

A New Revolution
Silent Pro Hybrid represents a paradigm shift in the way power supplies will be perceived within a system setup. It includes the features that many enthusiasts demand such as full control over cable management with fully modular cables, over 90% efficiency with 80Plus Gold Certification, noise-free operation, and other value-added features that ensure these users get the most out of their purchase.

Direct Fan Control
With a power supply integrated 7V fan power port and included 5.25” drive bay fan controller module,   the Silent Pro Hybrid Series removes the middleman by taking an unnecessary load off of the motherboard. This direct connection between power supply and fan controller provides the user with immediate on-the-fly control over the 135mm Super Silent Hydraulic Bearings power supply fan and up to 3 other system fans. The power and system fan speeds are adjusted independently via two dials. Users may determine the level of control they would like to wield by switching between automatic and manual modes for the power supply fan.

Noise-free Operation
The first to offer a “fanless” mode, the Silent Pro Hybrid Series seeks to eliminate unneeded fan noise. The power supply fan can be completed turned off to essentially operate as if it were fanless. This mode persists until loads become greater than 200W. At this point, a safe mode will activate the fan and cool according to the level of the load.

Simple Setup and Maintenance

Needs differ between systems and a fully modular cable setup allows the user to determine what is critical to their setup. This individualized approach provides for easier management of cables that open the door for a professional cable routing look with less overall effort. Maintenance and upgrades on the main power supply unit become extremely efficient and effective. Upgrade from one wattage to another by simply detaching all cables from the power supply and replace it with another, more powerful, unit in the Silent Pro Hybrid Series. All of this is done without disconnecting cables from the system itself. A computer can now be back up and running to work or game in a matter of seconds.

Pure Hacking believes organisations underestimating the challenge of securing corporate data and IP against malicious attacks, the number one threat for 2012

Sydney, 22 November 2011 – Pure Hacking, Australia’s leading specialist information security consultancy, today advised that organisations are still underestimating the threats to company data security and the consequences of malicious attacks. The lack of appropriate investment and security processes for corporate data networks will more than likely see 2012 eclipse the current level of data and IP theft. Major security challenges include corporate data leakage, industrial espionage, internet attacks and physical security threats.

“Corporate data leakage from internal sources is the single major security factor affecting Australian organisations today,” said Ty Miller, CTO, Pure Hacking. “This is because IT and management teams have underestimated the issues that arise when you connect more personal devices to the network and allow these personal devices to travel without restriction. This all contributes to a modern form of internal corporate espionage. “

For Pure Hacking the continued integration of both corporate and personal smartphones and tablets into corporate environments will continue to blur the security boundaries for these organisations. Lost, stolen and compromised mobile devices will lead to major corporate data leakage.

“We don’t expect this to become less of an issue anytime soon.  The increased adoption of personally owned laptops and mobile devices into any corporate environment, rather than corporate-supplied machines built with a standard operating environment, will also facilitate corporate data theft issues. This type of infrastructure will not restrict access for internal employees and contractors to confidential internal documents, data and valuable intellectual property,” Miller commented.

Expanding a corporate profile to social networking sites also poses a challenge for security management. “Eventually high profile social networking sites will become a major central identity and authentication provider for organisations. Our tests throughout the year have revealed that individuals compromise their own identities and the safety of their data by not understanding the challenges of security in social networking sites,” he said.

Pure Hacking has also outlined a range of security issues for corporate data network management in 2012:

  • Industrial Espionage – A clear understanding of the economic value of specific types of data will increase network attacks by unethical corporations and organised crime networks for financial gain, as well as competitive advantage over rival hacktivist groups.
  • Rebirth of Wireless Attacks – Most smartphones are only equipped to support simple authentication mechanisms, such as “Pre-Shared Key” (password). This potentially increases the likelihood of successfully gaining access to private mobile wireless hotspots and an increase direct mobile device attacks, internet connection hijacking, and man-in-the-middle attacks such as DNS spoofing and session hijacking.
  • Extortion through Hacking – With little prosecution outcomes, a migration away from hacking for fun to a move towards compromising companies for profit will escalate in 2012, especially extortion via hacking incidents. Some attackers may be deterred from stealing credit cards however “donations” may be extorted from companies via hacking incidents. This can either be achieved via threats of corporate data publication, destruction or simple Denial-of-Service mechanisms at key times.
  • Cyber Warfare – 2012 may very well see the next sophisticated worm develop, with expectations that another well-funded highly intelligent complex attack may occur, whether it is another sophisticated worm or a major Information Technology conspiracy.
  • Phishing + Client-side Exploitation: Compromised Smartphones – “Phishing + Client-side Exploitation” are likely to morph from the traditional phishing attack via email towards SMS-based phishing attacks. This technique shift allows phishers to bypass security controls such as spam and anti-virus gateways to connect to corporate networks and tunnel back data to the attacker by pivoting through the phone.
  • Physical security threat: Hardware Hacking and Offline Hard Disk Encryption Brute Forcing (2 in 1) – Lost and stolen mobile devices and laptops will be the most common physical security concern for organisations. Attackers will bypass security controls by manipulating hardware components within the device or attacking encryption mechanisms offline through new types of brute force attacks. Access to corporate data and remote access to corporate systems is the successful outcome.

“Organisations are not fully investigating the claims of compliance for smaller service providers in areas such as the Payment Card Industry Data Security Standard (PCI DSS), as well as not committing a realistic level of security investment to ensure that their suppliers and their own operations meet these obligations. This also extends to cloud computing security claims from ISPs, hosting and cloud application providers. Their networks may be compromised and this puts your data in an undermined position,” concluded Miller.

Swords and Sandals V Now in Public Beta

Swords and Sandals V Now in Public Beta

Today, 3RDSENSE announce the beta launch of the next and biggest chapter in their hugely popular RPG Swords and Sandals series – Swords and Sandals V: Grail of Antares.

The highly anticipated new game extends the world of the six previous Swords and Sandals titles beyond the combat arena to take the player on a series of epic gladiatorial quests. It will also spread the game beyond the web with iOS, Android, Facebook and download clients in development to make it a multi-platform, persistent-world game environment.

‘We believe Swords and Sandals V will be one of the first truly multi-platform games,’ said Colin Cardwell, 3RDSENSE CEO. ‘For the beta launch we’ve rolled out the web version to iron out the creases. Once we’ve got the gameplay right, the other platforms will follow so that players will be able to play a continuous game, seamlessly, across mobile, web and desktop. It’s the sort of game development that’s often talked about but rarely delivered.’

Fans of the series will find all their favourite gladiatorial combat, as well as a whole lot of new features. For the first time, players can manage multiple gladiators, building them up individually. Coming shortly, players will name and run their own gladiatorial ‘House’ and compete for honours against other houses. In addition to fighting arena foes, gladiators must also complete quests, battling dragons and scorcers, navigating dungeons and mazes, to increase their levels and gain strength, intellect, dexterity and endurance.

Currently in single player mode, the new title will soon introduce multi-player combat with Facebook Connect integration, allowing players to challenge both their friends and other players within the game.

‘With Swords and Sandals V we wanted to evolve the franchise without losing any of the core gameplay we know the fans love,’ said Oliver Joyce, series Lead Developer. ‘We think we’ve moved the experience on with the fantasy quest and the multi-player mode. Gladiatorial fighting is still at the heart of the game but we’ve made it much richer and more challenging.

Swords and Sandals V is free to play and features a virtual currency where players earn ‘Gold’ and ‘Gems’ as they progress. They can also increase their weapons and strengthen their armour with in-game purchase of Gems using PayPal or credit card.

Swords and Sandals V is the latest in the RPG series which includes six other web and dowload titles plus an iPhone version. The hugely popular series has

The newest title is currently in public beta and 3RDSENSE is asking for feedback from players. It can be played on swordsandsandals.com.
