Socially engineered threats target trusting consumers with malicious Android apps, celebrity sex videos and scareware scams

– AVG’s Q2 Threat Report warns of new sophisticated attacks aimed at unsuspecting PC and Android smartphone users –

MELBOURNE and AMSTERDAM 26 July, 2012 – AVG (AU/NZ) has released the AVG Technologies’ Q2 2012 Community Powered Threat Report. Cybercriminals have been using social engineering techniques to create malware that successfully exploits commonplace user activity such as downloading mobile phone applications and accessing online content through popular sites such as YouTube.

First Android bootkit turns your smartphone into a ‘zombie’

The Android operating system for smartphones is now leading with 59 percent market share, according to the latest figures from IDC[1]. Taking advantage of this lucrative opportunity, cybercriminals have created the first Android bootkit which turns phones with the Android operating system into ‘zombies’, meaning they come fully under the control of the cybercriminal.  Cashing in on the application craze, this ‘DKFbootkit’ malware tricks users by masquerading as a legitimate application available for Android smartphones and poses a serious threat to the many Android smartphone users worldwide.

Once users download the application, the malware encourages them to click ‘OK’ to run it, which then roots the device. Since the smartphones are either connected to a mobile operator for payment or pre-paid, the malware author can siphon off small amounts of money on an on-going basis using premium SMS, usually without the user noticing as the amounts per individual user are kept small.

Malicious Trojan hides in unofficial ‘Angry Birds Space’ application

Malware creators have developed a Trojan-infected version of this highly popular application, developed by Angry Birds creator Rovio in conjunction with NASA. Available on unofficial Android stores, it looks and functions exactly like the legitimate application but the difference is that it uses what is known as the ‘GingerBreak exploit’ to root Android devices. Rooting a device allows the malware to download and install additional malware onto the victim’s smartphone, turn it into part of a botnet, modify files and launch URLs so that that phone is no longer under the user’s control.

Celebrity sex and scare-mongering scams lure PC users

Tempted to view a video of socialites and celebrities undressed? Think twice before you click on the play button as another major threat that emerged in recent months is a new version of last year’s LizaMoon SQL mass-injection attack hidden inside celebrity sex videos and false security alerts. When users click on a link to view the non-existent video or visit the fake security website, this malware downloads a Trojan. The style of the attack depends on the internet browser being used:

  • Mozilla      Firefox®: users are taken to a fake Flash update page      which purports to show a vulgar video of socialite Paris Hilton or actress      Emma Watson. In fact, they will never get to see the video as when they      click on it, they are prompted to update their Flash software which then downloads      the disguised Trojan.
  • Microsoft      Internet Explorer®: in this attack, cybercriminals      play on people’s peace of mind by mimicking a legitimate antivirus product      which claims to have detected all sorts of malware on their PC and can      help remove it. If users follow the link and install the application, then      go on to purchase the product, it will simply download a completely      ineffective rogue to their PC. If the victim changes their mind and      chooses not to purchase the product, ‘nag’ screens will keep popping up      until the rogue is cleaned from the machine. The latest version is known      as a ‘drive-by’ download as the malware will execute from the web page,      without requiring the user to download anything at all.

Michael McKinnon, Security Advisor at AVG (AU/NZ), said: “These threats are a bit like the Emperor’s new clothes – they are the same style of attacks as we have seen before but socially engineered by cybercriminals to trap victims who are becoming more security savvy. The greater sophistication of these threats also means they are difficult for everyday users to spot something is wrong once the malware has been installed, making them very potent. It’s vital that consumers think before they click ‘OK’ to anything online or on their phone.”

Top five tips to keep your Android smartphone and computer safe:

  1. Prior to installing any      application, carry out a background check on the developer and      application, looking at ratings, reviews, history. Only download from      application stores, sites and developers you trust – or set your device to      download only from Google Play.
  2. Think before you click ‘OK’      to any requests your phone or PC make for your permission. Check if it      seems bona fide or whether it appears odd that the application should be      asking for this permission or to execute a download.
  3. Keep your computer      programs, such as Adobe Acrobat and Adobe Reader, up-to-date so you are      not tempted to follow prompts to upgrade when trying to access content      from the web.
  4. Install antivirus security      software on your computer and your smartphone and keep it updated. This      will work as your eyes and ears to keep your personal information safe and      ensure your peace of mind at home and on the move.
  5. Monitor your mobile phone      bills very carefully – if you notice any small amounts you cannot account      for, investigate further and if you suspect your smartphone has been      exploited, run a genuine security product to find and remove any malware.

–    GAAP Revenue of $1.668 billion
–    Non-GAAP Operating Margin of 26.1%
–    Non-GAAP Earnings Per Share of $0.43
–    GAAP Deferred Revenue of $3.745 billion
–    Cash Flow from Operations of $340 million

MOUNTAIN VIEW, Calif. – July 25, 2012 – Symantec Corp. (Nasdaq: SYMC) today reported the results of its first quarter of fiscal year 2013, ended June 29, 2012. GAAP revenue for the fiscal first quarter was $1.668 billion, up 1 percent year-over-year and up 4 percent after adjusting for currency.

“Symantec delivered another solid quarter. The company’s investment in cloud security and mobility continues to gain momentum and position us well worldwide,” said Steve Bennett, chairman, president and chief executive officer, Symantec. “We are making progress on many fronts, but believe we can further accelerate the company’s value to employees, customers, partners and shareholders.”

“We delivered record June quarter revenue and deferred revenue, as well as growth in earnings per share despite an 11 percent foreign currency headwind,” said James Beer, executive vice president and chief financial officer, Symantec. “We saw strength in endpoint protection, consumer security, authentication services, data loss prevention, and backup appliances.”

GAAP Results: GAAP operating margin for the first quarter of fiscal year 2013 was 16.1 percent compared with 18.3 percent for the same quarter last year. GAAP net income for the fiscal first quarter was $172 million compared with net income of $191 million for the year-ago period. GAAP diluted earnings per share were $0.24 compared with $0.25 for the year ago quarter.  Variation in year-over-year GAAP results were as expected due to increases in restructuring costs and IT infrastructure investments.

GAAP deferred revenue as of June 29, 2012, was $3.745 billion compared with $3.689 billion as of July 1, 2011, up 2 percent year-over-year and up 5 percent after adjusting for currency. Cash flow from operating activities for the first quarter of fiscal year 2013 was $340 million compared with $503 million for the year ago period.

Non-GAAP Results: Non-GAAP operating margin for the first quarter of fiscal year 2013 was 26.1 percent compared with 27.0 percent for the same quarter last year. Non-GAAP net income for the first quarter was $309 million, flat compared to the year-ago period. Non-GAAP diluted earnings per share were $0.43 compared with earnings per share of $0.40 for the year-ago quarter, an increase of 7 percent year-over-year.

Symantec ended the quarter with cash, cash equivalents and short-term investments of $4.1 billion. During the quarter, Symantec repurchased 19 million shares for $301 million at an average price of $15.59. Symantec has $683 million remaining in the current board authorized stock repurchase plan.

Business Segment and Geographic Highlights
For the quarter, Symantec’s Consumer segment represented 31 percent of total revenue and decreased 1 percent year-over-year (increased 2 percent after adjusting for currency). The Security and Compliance segment represented 30 percent of total revenue and increased 7 percent year-over-year (increased 10 percent after adjusting for currency). The Storage and Server Management segment represented 35 percent of total revenue and decreased 2 percent year-over-year (increased 1 percent after adjusting for currency). Services represented 4 percent of total revenue and declined 2 percent year-over-year (increased 1 percent after adjusting for currency).

International revenue represented 51 percent of total revenue in the first quarter of fiscal year 2013 with a flat growth rate year-over-year (increased 6 percent after adjusting for currency). The Europe, Middle East and Africa region represented 26 percent of total revenue for the quarter and decreased 8 percent year-over-year (increased 3 percent after adjusting for currency). The Asia Pacific/Japan revenue for the quarter represented 19 percent of total revenue and increased 9 percent year-over-year (increased 10 percent after adjusting for currency). The Americas, including the United States, Latin America and Canada, represented 55 percent of total revenue and increased 3 percent year-over-year on an actual and currency-adjusted basis.

Acquisition Highlights
Our acquisitions exceeded our expectations this quarter, generating $24 million in revenue from the Clearwell and LiveOffice acquisitions as we leveraged the scope and scale of the Symantec sales force.

Second Quarter Fiscal Year 2013 Guidance
Guidance assumes an exchange rate of $1.23 per Euro for the September 2012 quarter versus the actual weighted average rate of $1.41 and an end of period rate of $1.34 per Euro for the September 2011 quarter.  Our guidance assumes an effective tax rate of 28.5 percent and a common stock equivalents total for the quarter of approximately 710 million shares.

Given the recent strengthening of the US dollar relative to other currencies, for the second quarter of fiscal year 2013, ending Sept. 28, 2012, GAAP revenue is estimated between $1.635 billion and $1.665 billion, as compared to revenue of $1.68 billion during the September 2011 quarter. Symantec is expecting revenue to decline 1 percent to 3 percent year-over-year as reported, and be up 1 percent to 3 percent in constant currency.

As a result of raising a billion dollars in senior unsecured notes during June, our interest expense for the next four quarters will be higher by $8 million per quarter. This will decrease EPS by $0.008 per quarter for a total of  approximately $0.03 dilution through June 2013.

GAAP diluted earnings per share are estimated between $0.15 and $0.19 as compared to $0.24 in the year ago period. Non-GAAP diluted earnings per share are estimated between $0.35 and $0.39 as compared to $0.39 in the year ago period, down 10 percent to flat on an as reported basis.

GAAP deferred revenue is expected to be in the range of $3.49 billion and $3.55 billion, compared to $3.45 billion at the end of September 2011. Symantec is expecting deferred revenue to be up 1 percent to 3 percent year-over-year as reported, and up 3 percent to 4 percent in constant currency.

“Enrique Salem has been a significant contributor during his 19 years’ associated with Symantec, including the last three years as CEO,” said Steve Bennett, chairman, president, and CEO. “While progress has been made over the last three years in many areas, it was the board’s judgment that it was in the best interests of Symantec  to make a change in the CEO.”

“The board’s decision to make a leadership change was not based on any particular event or impropriety but was instead made after ongoing consideration and a deliberative process,” said Dan Schulman, Symantec’s newly-appointed lead director. “We are fortunate as a board to be able to name Steve as CEO and achieve continuity in leadership.  Steve understands the company well, had a great track record at Intuit and General Electric and is a perfect fit for moving the company forward.”

THE RAZER OUROBOROS PUTS INFINITY IN THE PALM OF YOUR HAND

World leading game peripheral company launches an ergonomic, ambidextrous mouse customizable for all users

Immediate Release: July 26, 2012

Carlsbad, Calif.—Razer, the world leader in high-performance gaming hardware, today announced the release of the Razer Ouroboros. Like its namesake, the elite gaming mouse can evolve without limit, with fully-customizable ergonomics that are adjustable for any hand size and grip style.

No two people have the same sized hands, and everyone grips his or her mouse differently. When researching form factor preferences for ambidextrous mice, Razer’s team of ergonomic scientists and engineers discovered three key factors in design: the length of the mouse, the back arch and the grip profile.  With this in mind, the Razer Ouroboros is designed for precision gaming, with an adjustable palm rest capable of moving up to 0.9 in. (20 mm), suitable for people of varying hand sizes.

The Ouroboros additionally boasts two interchangeable side panels for altering the footprint of the mouse to suit claw, palm or hybrid grip styles, and it has an adjustable back tilt angle to ensure palm support for gaming comfort and endurance.  Its enhanced sensor technology is capable of up to 8200 dpi, and a dedicated, built-in dpi clutch trigger button ensures players can achieve pinpoint precision when needed.  Powered by a single rechargeable AA battery, the Razer Ouroboros ensures a minimum of 12 hrs. of drag-free, lag-less play.

Adding even more versatility to the mix, Razer has also included an upgraded, award-winning 4G Dual Sensor System, and gaming-grade, 1 ms wireless technology, providing the option for wired or wireless use.

“Designed for excellence and total ownage, the Razer Ouroboros was intended to be wielded by all serious gamers looking to win any FPS, RTS or RPG with custom-made dominance,” said Robert “RazerGuy” Krakoff, president of Razer USA. “We are proud to introduce it as Razer’s first gaming mouse that features optimized, customizable, ambidextrous ergonomics that better fit the curvature of any and every hand size and personal grip style by delivering ultimate comfort, control, power and built-in intelligence to ascend to gaming immortality.”

About Razer Ouroboros Gaming Mouse:

The Razer Ouroboros ambidextrous wireless gaming mouse is designed for both right- and left-handed gamers. It offers fully customizable ergonomics and a fit for every hand size—big or small—by allowing adjustment of the arched palm rest and back.  Two interchangeable side panels ensure you’re using your preferred grip style at all times. Game for hours-on-end while minimizing fatigue and maximizing comfort.

Razer’s highly advanced 8200 dpi 4G Dual Sensor System powers the mouse. This gaming-grade mouse sensor combines a laser and an optical sensor to enhance tracking precision and detect surfaces 10 times faster than previous generation sensors.  Its all-new dpi clutch lets you temporarily reduce or increase the dpi as you game, so you can go from high-sensitivity assault to more measured sniper, then back to assault again, as needed.

The Razer Ouroboros also features an ultra-low 1 ms latency wireless play that is as responsive and precise as when it is corded. You’re as free to swipe and destroy as your play style dictates.

Intel Introduces a World First: ‘Me The Musical’

Celebrate The ‘Interesting Times’ We Live In

HONG KONG, July 26, 2012 – Facebook users have a fun new way to experience the popular social media network thanks to “Me The Musical,” a novel on-line experience from Intel Corporation that celebrates our recent past through a musical movie.

Intel’s “Me The Musical” creates a personalised animated movie which takes Facebook users on an entertaining journey, via song and dance, through world events.

It begins with the user’s date of birth and moves through a series of musical scenes which draw on the key themes of each decade from the 1950s to today. Along the way it adds a personal touch by including friends from Facebook and reminders of significant individual milestones.

“Me The Musical” is a world first, according to Jayant Murty, Intel’s director of brand strategy and integrated marketing for Asia Pacific, and its purpose is to entertain. “It is important to celebrate an interesting past with an eye on the future, ” he said.

“Life moves very quickly, so it’s fun to take time for a diversion once in a while,” said Stephanie Gan, Intel’s Asia-Pacific advertising manager.

Ladies and Gentlemen, Please Take Your Seats

Facebook users visit intel.com/musical and log on using their account (the application adheres to Facebook’s privacy guidelines and Intel’s own privacy policy). Me The Musical’s opening scenes show a mythical stork making a special delivery on the user’s date of birth.

Throughout the experience, the user is represented by a simple avatar and is accompanied by other avatars adorned with images of their Facebook friends. The group moves together down a path which represents the passage of time.

Me The Musical features iconic moments including the moon landing, creation of the World Wide Web, rise of email and, of course, introduction of Facebook itself. In keeping with Intel’s role as a “sponsor of tomorrow,” it ends with a symbolic step into the future.

Message in the Medium

Like any good musical, the experience has a message.

“At its heart, ‘Me The Musical’ is a celebration of shared experiences and of the things that unite us,” Murty said. For example, a love of nostalgia, of storytelling, and music and dance are themes common to many of the world’s cultures.

“It is an experience that is both general and very personal at the same. By including selected elements from your own personal profile, ‘Me The Musical’ helps to show your life against a broader context of what was happening in the world at the time.”

“Me The Musical” also serves to highlight the enormous impact technology has made in people’s lives and look to what Intel says is a new era in computing.

“The invention of the microprocessor has changed our lives remarkably,” Murty said. “Today it is hard to think of a life-changing innovation which isn’t being assisted by computers. But computing itself is evolving and new devices called Ultrabook™ represent a new era.”

Ultrabooks are a new category of devices inspired by Intel. Its vision for the Ultrabook is a multi-year, industry-wide endeavor in which they will increasingly deliver on the promise toward a no-compromise, most complete, satisfying and more secure computing experience.

The latest Ultrabook systems raise the bar for users’ computing experiences and
enable more choices in style and design while delivering increased responsiveness, improved power efficiency, greater security and up to 2x better media and graphics over previous generations.
