Grand Slam Tennis 2011 (EA GAMES) … sneak peek!

Grand Slam Tennis 2 tries to be a realistic take at tennis, but fails in certain areas. The presentation is top-notch, with loads of licensed stars including McEnroe, Cash, Federer and Nadal and many others from now and yesteryear.

The graphics and atmospheric sounds are seriously realistic—you could be mistaken for watching a real game. The games are commentated by Cash and McEnroe, with limited contextual phrases, which will repeat over and over again after your second game.  If I hear McEnroe talk about “the pros and cons of hitting it deep” for the umpteenth time, I will scream!

The audience is repetitively rendered with their movements seeming clunky and synchronised.  EA bring all their usual modes such as career modes, online multiplayer and Share a Pro.

One last thing: the difficulty is much too easy, with the controls at default difficulty making it impossible to hit it out. Also, approaching the net at the earliest opportunity and volleying puts you at too great an advantage. You can win a few grand slam tournaments without even trying.

The game is on the PS3 and Xbox 360, but curiously, not the Wii.

Symantec Survey Reveals Significant Adoption of Enterprise Mobile Apps, IT Focuses on Balancing Benefits and Risks

SYDNEY, Australia – 23 February 2012 Symantec Corp. (Nasdaq: SYMC) today announced the results of its 2012 State of Mobility Survey, which revealed a global tipping point in mobility adoption. The survey highlighted an uptake in mobile applications across organisations with 71 percent of enterprises at least discussing deploying custom mobile applications and one-third currently implementing or have already implemented custom mobile applications.

Despite this adoption, almost half (48 percent) of survey respondents mentioned that mobility is somewhat to extremely challenging (55 percent in Australia) and a further 41 percent of survey respondents identified mobile devices as one of their top three IT risks (43 percent in Australia). Yet in the face of these challenges, IT is striking a balance between mobile benefits and risks by transforming its approach to mobility to deliver improved business agility, increased productivity and workforce effectiveness.

“We are impressed by the pace of mobile application adoption within organisations,” said CJ Desai, senior vice president, Endpoint and Mobility Group, Symantec. “This cultural change from refusing mobile devices not long ago, to actively distributing and developing mobile applications, has introduced a new set of challenges and complexities for IT staff. Encouragingly, from a security perspective, a majority of organisations are thinking beyond the simple case of lost or stolen mobile phones.”

Read more detailed blog posts:

The State of Mobility Survey reveals the challenges organisations are grappling with in accommodating the mobility tipping point and also identifies and quantifies mobility-associated risks as perceived by IT decision makers. In this survey, more than 6,000 organisations (300 in Australia) from 43 countries bring to light the change in the usage of mobile devices and mobile applications.

Mobile Devices Now Critical Business Tools

The significant adoption of mobile applications demonstrates remarkable confidence, by organisations, in the ability for mobility to deliver value. This confidence is further supported by a rare alignment between expectations and reality upon implementation. Furthermore, 59 percent of respondents are now relying on mobile devices for line-of-business applications, another sign that mobility has graduated to mainstream status.

Mobile Initiatives Significantly Impacting IT Resources

As with the adoption of any new technology, mobility is challenging IT organisations. Almost half (48 percent) of respondents mentioned that mobility is somewhat to extremely challenging (55 percent in Australia), while two-thirds noted that reducing the cost and complexity is one of their top business objectives. In Symantec’s view, this increased pain level indicates the transition from small pilots and tactical implementations ? where policies are often bypassed and exceptions are made ? to enterprise-wide deployments where policy standards across a larger scale introduce greater complexity. This also suggests that many implementations are not yet taking sufficient advantage of their existing enterprise systems and processes, which would alleviate much of the pain and cost that comes with larger scale and resource duplication.

Mobility Risks Impacting Organisations

Mobile adoption is not without risks, and IT organisations recognise this challenge. Approximately three out of four organisations indicate maintaining a high level of security is a top business objective for mobility and 41 percent identified mobile devices as one of the top three IT risks (43 percent in Australia), making it the leading risk cited by IT. Concerns are wide-ranging, from lost and stolen devices, data leakage, unauthorised access to corporate resources and the spread of malware infections from mobile devices to the company network. With mobile devices now delivering critical business processes and data, the cost of security incidents can be significant. Globally, the average annual cost of mobile incidents for enterprises, including data loss, damage to the brand, productivity loss, and loss of customer trust was USD$429,000 (AUD$400,218). The global average annual cost of mobile incidents for small businesses was USD$126,000 (AUD$117,000). In Australia, the average cost of mobile incidents across both SMB and enterprise was AUD$172,000.

Recommendations

Organisations that choose to embrace mobility, without compromising on security, are most likely to improve business processes and achieve productivity gains. To this end, organisations should consider developing a mobile strategy that defines the organisation’s mobile culture and aligns with their security risk tolerance.

Some key recommendations include:

  • Enable      broadly: Mobility offers tremendous      opportunities for organisations of all sizes. Explore how you can take      advantage of mobility and develop a phased approach to build an ecosystem      that supports your plan. To get the most from mobile advances, plan for      line-of-business mobile applications that have mainstream use. Employees      will use mobile devices for business one way or another – make it on your      terms.
  • Think      strategically: Build a realistic      assessment of the ultimate scale of your mobile business plan and its      impact on your infrastructure. Think beyond email. Explore all of the      mobile opportunities that can be introduced and understand the risks and      threats that need to be mitigated. As you plan, take a cross-functional      approach to securing sensitive data no matter where it might end up.
  • Manage      efficiently: Mobile devices are legitimate      endpoints that require the same attention given to traditional PCs. Many      of the processes, policies, education and technologies that are leveraged      for desktops and laptops are also applicable to mobile platforms. So the      management of mobile devices should be integrated into the overall IT      management framework and administered in the same way – ideally using      compatible solutions and unified policies. This creates operational      efficiencies and lowers the total cost of ownership.
  • Enforce      Appropriately: As more employees connect      their personal devices to the corporate network, organisations need to      modify their acceptable usage policies to accommodate both corporate-owned      and personally-owned devices. Management and security levers will need to      differ based on ownership of the device and the associated controls that      the organisation requires. Employees will continue to add devices to the      corporate network to make their jobs more efficient and enjoyable so      organisations must plan for this legally, operationally and culturally.
  • Secure      comprehensively: Look beyond basic password,      wipe and application blocking policies. Focus on the information and where      it is viewed, transmitted and stored. Integrating with existing data loss      prevention, encryption and authentication policies will ensure consistent      corporate and regulatory compliance.

Symantec’s 2012 State of Mobility Survey

Symantec’s 2012 State of Mobility Survey was conducted by Applied Research from August-November 2011. The results are based on 6,275 organisations in 43 countries in North America, EMEA (Europe, Middle East and Africa), Asia Pacific, Japan and Latin America. Among small businesses, we spoke with the person in charge of IT. Among enterprises, we contacted senior IT and C-level professionals. For the purposes of this survey, mobile devices refer to handheld devices such as the Blackberry Smartphone, iPhone, Android, iTouch and other similar devices. Laptops are not included in the definition of mobile devices.

Australian based games developer Nnooo has revealed their award-winning game escapeVektor will be coming to both the PlayStation Vita and Nintendo 3DS. escapeVektor is a retro styled arcade game in which the player controls Vektor, an entity trapped inside the console’s CPU.

The player has to help Vektor escape the CPU which has been holding him captive. In making his escape, Vektor must get through obstacles and avoid enemies, each with different hunting patterns and intelligence. As the player completes the various levels in the game, escape becomes more difficult. New abilities unlock to help the player outwit and destroy the CPU’s army. As the player continues through the game, old code and memories are unlocked which reveal more about Vektor’s past.

“We were delighted by the reception the WiiWare™ version of the game received,” said Nic Watt, Creative Director at Nnooo. “We originally planned to have four Chapters but have now decided to roll them all into one game and bring it out on these new consoles to reach a wider audience.”

The new version of the game will have new enemies and obstacles, plenty of extra levels and online leaderboards. Each console’s unique features will also be highlighted.

“Playing the game in 3D on the Nintendo 3DS is really cool,” said Watt. “With the background to each level pulsing in time to the cool chip-tune soundtrack you really get drawn into game’s environment. For PlayStation Vita players we hope to make use of near™ and location based leaderboards. We’ll also be experimenting with the front and rear touchscreen controls.”

KID ICARUS™: UPRISING

Over 25 years after the launch of the original Kid Icarus, Kid Icarus: Uprising comes to Nintendo 3DS on 29th March

24 February 2012

Nintendo has revealed new details about the storyline and single-player game play in Kid Icarus™: Uprising, which will launch exclusively for the Nintendo 3DS™ system on 29th March. Over 25 years after the launch of the original Kid Icarus game for NES™, Kid Icarus: Uprising brings the action and adventure of this beloved series to new heights.

–  Introduction: The game’s story begins with the return of the Queen of the Underworld, Medusa, and her Underworld Army. Pit, a heroic angel, with the help of Palutena, goddess of light and guardian of the human race, must combat the forces of darkness as he battles Medusa and her minions by air and by land.

–  Fiend’s Cauldron: An incredible new system that allows players to customise their play experience, the Fiend’s Cauldron lets players adjust their desired Intensity ranging from 0.0 to 9.0 for each individual Chapter. As the Intensity increases, enemies will be more aggressive, have more energy and hit harder but players will be able to earn more Hearts and more powerful weapon drops by defeating them. Hearts are also used by players to purchase new weapons. The standard Intensity is set at 2.0 but players can precisely adjust this by 0.1 increments. In order to increase the Intensity, players must bet by placing an increasing number of Hearts into the Fiend’s Cauldron. If the player is defeated during the Chapter, some Hearts will be lost and the Intensity will automatically be lowered.

– Weapons: A wide variety of collectible weapons offers an extraordinary amount of replay value. With nine different categories of weapons, ranging from Divine Bows to Shot Claws, players can learn the unique characteristics of each weapon and determine which is best suited for each battle and their style of play.

– Vehicles: Pit will have access to special vehicles during certain parts of his adventure, such as the Exo Tank. Pit can use the tank’s powerful drift ability to defeat enemies with the tank’s ramming horn.

– Stand: Kid Icarus: Uprising uses a control scheme designed to fit the game’s unique blend of flight, shooting and melee combat, and offers tremendous precision, speed and depth that rewards dedicated players. The left hand uses the Circle Pad, while the right uses a stylus, both at the same time. Every copy of the game will come with a free stand that holds the Nintendo 3DS at an angle above any flat surface, and provides players with a new kind of gaming experience.

– Circle Pad Pro: Kid Icarus: Uprising is compatible with the Circle Pad Pro accessory, offering an alternate control scheme for left-handed players. With the Circle Pad Pro, the player holds the stylus in their left hand and uses the Circle Pad with their right hand.
More details about Kid Icarus: Uprising will be revealed closer to launch, keep an eye on http://gamesites.nintendo.com.au/kid-icarus-uprising for upcoming information.
