Encounter giants of the Ice Age in amazing IMAX 3D

Discover the real Ice Age and the majestic prehistoric animals that lived in this harsh and beautiful lost world, in the new action-packed IMAX film, Titans of the Ice Age 3D. Titans of the Ice Age 3D opens at IMAX Melbourne Museum just in time for the winter school holidays on 20 June 2013.

Dazzling computer-generated imagery brings the Pleistocene Ice Age to life in IMAX 3D, 20,000 years back in time when woolly beasts such as sabre-toothed cats, giant ground sloths, dire wolves and the iconic woolly mammoth existed alongside humans.

“Megafauna, like dinosaurs before them, were huge prehistoric animals and IMAX 3D is the perfect canvas to showcase these spectacular beasts in their natural habitat”, said Dr Erich Fitzgerald, Senior Curator of Vertebrate Palaeontology, Museum Victoria.

“The themes in Titans of the Ice Age 3D apply equally to Australian’s very own Ice Age giants, which included lost beasts such as the rhino-sized Diprotodon and the fearsome marsupial lion Thylacoleo that lived in Victoria not so long ago. These are megafauna we almost met, and the lessons revealed in Titans of the Ice Age 3D remind us how much our world has, and can, change.”

As well as being one of Australia’s most active palaeontologists, Dr Erich Fitzgerald helped develop Melbourne Museum’s 600 Million Years and Dinosaur Walk exhibitions, both which feature megafauna marsupials and are literally a minutes’ walk from IMAX, based at IMAX Melbourne Museum.

“Already made famous through Ice Age the movie, extraordinary fossil discoveries and cave paintings, the iconic woolly mammoth is brought to life in this film and we learn how they really lived thousands of years ago.”

In Titans of the Ice Age 3D, audiences will uncover amazing fossil discoveries including baby Lyuba, a female Woolly Mammoth calf recently exposed by the melting Siberian permafrost, now one of the best preserved mammoth mummies in the world.  Audiences will also discover the story of Zed, one of the most complete Colombian Mammoth skeletons ever uncovered, extracted in 2008 from under a Los Angeles parking lot next to the famous La Brea Tar Pits.

Narrated by Academy Award winning actor Christopher Plummer, Titans of the Ice Age 3D is shot on location at Yellowstone National Park, the Northern Great Plains, the Rocky Mountains and Alaska.

“The Crossing” Selected for Prestigious New Zealand Mountain Film Festival

The Story of the First Adventurers to Walk Across Victoria Island

Sydney Australia…May 21, 2013…

Distracted Media’s feature documentary “The Crossing” will cross the Tasman to be shown at the prestigious New Zealand Mountain Film Festival on Sunday July 7 at 4.00pm in Wanaka on the South Island.  Recently announced as one of ten finalists in the 2013 Foxtel Australian Documentary Prize category in this year’s Sydney Film Festival* (Thursday June 6, 2013 at 6.15pm at Event Cinemas, George St, Sydney), “The Crossing” is the story of the infamous Victoria Island adventures of explorer, Clark Carter and his expedition partner, Chris Bray.

The award-winning filmmakers of Australian horror film, The Tunnel partnered with the Australian adventurers four years ago.  Directed by Julian Harvey and with the support of Australian Geographic, iiNet and Gore-Tex®, the feature documentary details the first attempt in 2005 by Clark Carter and Chris Bray to navigate Victoria Island in the Arctic Circle.  It will then recount when the pair returned in 2008 to finally complete the expedition.

“It has been such an exciting journey that I am now thrilled to see “The Crossing” lined up for its third film festival.  Last year the feature documentary had an excerpt played at the European Outdoor Film Tour and it was met with lots of positive feed-back so I can’t wait to see what locals here and in New Zealand think of “The Crossing”.  The New Zealand Mountain Film Festival is the perfect fit for the film – what better place to screen an adventure film than in Wanaka – surrounded by the mountains and full of adventurous like-minded film-goers” said adventurer, Clark Carter.

‘The Crossing’ is a feature documentary following two young Australians, Clark Carter and Chris Bray as they set off on the adventure of a lifetime. The pair attempted to drag their home-made kayaks more than one thousand kilometres across a remote island in the arctic.  Their story is equal parts rock n’ roll and youthful exuberance, resulting in disaster! They battled freezing temperatures, knee-deep mud, razor sharp rocks, got chased by wolves and hid from polar bears until finally being forced to admit their dream was over.

After 58 days alone in the wilderness, they had covered only a third of the distance. Unable to let go of their dream, three years later Clark and Chris confidently returned to finish the job. They were a little older, wiser and thought they knew what to expect from the island. They re-designed and re-built a custom cart to carry the five hundred kilograms of food and equipment needed to survive a hundred days in the arctic. After a positive start, things yet again take a turn for the worse. The duo soon realised the island isn’t going to let them across without a fight.

Edited from more than a hundred hours of stunning high definition footage shot by Clark Carter and Chris Bray, ‘The Crossing’ is an insight into the minds of two young adventurers biting off far more than they can chew. This story is an antidote to a world of instant gratification, showing that you

can achieve anything – but sometimes there ain’t no easy way.

AVG Technologies Launches its Latest Range of Performance Applications for Android™

Mobile users to save on time, space and data with AVG Image Shrinker and AVG Cleaner

SYDNEY – 21 May, 2013 – AVG Technologies N.V. (NYSE: AVG), the provider of Internet and mobile security, privacy and optimization to 150 million active users, has today announced two brand new applications in its mobile portfolio. AVG Cleaner and AVG Image Shrinker are now available for free for Android™ smartphones and tablets.

AVG Cleaner

Designed to enhance Android™ smartphone and tablet performance, AVG Cleaner allows users to monitor storage availability on their device and clean cache and unnecessary browser history files to free up memory and make more space. The application includes tools to automatically monitor device memory and storage, remove files, and schedule regular clean ups to keep the device running smoothly.

AVG Image Shrinker

Developed to help users save on data use and share their images more easily, AVG Image Shrinker is a free application which reduces image sizes and enables direct uploads to photo sharing sites, MMS or email directly from the application. Images can be uploaded straight to Facebook®, Pinterest, Instagram, Picasa and many other popular social network sites. By reducing the size of photos and images, users not only save on mobile data usage and the resulting costs, but also the time it takes to send or upload their photos.

“Nowadays we rely upon smartphones and tablets more than ever before, cramming our devices full to the brim with everything we need to maintain our busy digital lives. What people might not realise however is that all of the files related to apps, pictures, calls, texts, and Internet usage can take up excess space and consume large amounts of mobile data,” said Michael McKinnon, Security Advisor at AVG Technologies AU.

“Just as you would clear out your wardrobe to make space for new clothes or clean your PC disk from junk files, freeing up valuable memory on your smartphone by deleting redundant files is important to keep your device running smoothly and give you the freedom to use it as you wish – whether that means adding the apps you really want or taking and sharing a barrage of holiday snaps. Hassle-free performance products such as AVG Cleaner and AVG Image Shrinker enable users to easily and efficiently get the most out of the devices they rely upon every day.”

Today’s announcement follows the company’s recent release of AVG TuneUp ™, which was made available for free for Android smartphones and tablets in April 2013. Built to help users get improved performance from their devices, the application combines several performance tools including a task killer, battery saver and storage space manager, and also allows users to monitor their data usage.

TWEENS TAKING TO TECHNOLOGY LIKE TEENS

Children as young as eight (tweens) are adopting technology faster than expected, particularly social networking, with 67 per cent revealing they are currently using a social media site. They are also more advanced in their device usage with between three and four internet enabled devices being used by tweens at any one time.

Released at a roundtable discussion with Senator The Hon. Stephen Conroy Minister for Broadband, Communications and the Digital Economy as part of National Cyber Security Awareness Week, the report titled Tweens, Teens and Technology Report is an extension of the McAfee Secret Life of Teens report last year and was commissioned to identify the online behaviour gaps between tweens, teens and parents in the digital world.

Key findings:

  • Despite the age eligibility for Facebook (13 years      old), 1 in 4 (26%) of tweens are currently using Facebook
  • This use is generally approved by parents, with 95%      having parental approval
  • 1 in 5 (19%) tweens have chatted to someone online that      they did not know previously
  • Cyber Bullying is an issue for tweens, 25% have seen a      nasty comment online
  • Cyber bullying becomes an even bigger issue once a      tween enters their teenage years; half of all teens 53% are exposed to      cyber bullying

Commenting on the report Andrew Littleproud, President, McAfee Asia Pacific said, “The findings are a welcome spotlight on tweens. With the national rollout of the NBN and the increase use of devices by our younger audience in the homes, both parents and schools are encouraged to keep a close monitor on their child’s online behaviour to ensure they have safe online experiences.”
