Kingston Technology Releases SSDNow V+ Solid-State Drive – Higher Capacity, IOPS, Faster Read/Write Speeds in SSDNow V+

Sydney Australia – (August 13, 2009) – Kingston Technology Company, Inc., the independent world leader in memory products, today announced a new addition to its SSDNow line of solid-state drives. The SSDNow V+ features capacities from 64GB to 256GB with higher input and output operations per second (IOPS) and faster read/write speeds than a standard mechanical hard-disk drive. It is targeted to prosumers and enterprise companies looking to increase performance and extend the life of existing systems.

“The SSDNow V+ is the ideal solid-state drive for power users, system builders, system integrators, and in demanding corporate environments where efficiency and performance are important as more system resources are in use,” said Vaughan Nankivell, Regional Manager, Australia and New Zealand for Kingston Technology. “Users will be more productive as the drive’s higher capacities and IOPS allow for more data storage and faster boot and application load times.”

A computer’s operating system will benefit from the drive’s impressive random 4K read speeds of up to 6,300 IOPS, and random 4K writes of up to 291 IOPS. The Kingston SSDNow V+ has a blazing sequential read speed of up to 220MB/sec. and write speeds of up to 180MB/sec.

The V+ is the latest addition to the SSDNow family of solid-state drives. The V+ is currently available in the United States in 64GB, 128GB and 256GB capacities; the 64GB drive is available worldwide with increased capacities to come. It uses a standard SATA interface and is extremely durable with no moving parts and less heat generation than a typical hard-disk drive.

The SSD is backed by a three-year warranty, free tech support and legendary Kingston reliability. For more information, visit www.kingston.com/anz.

AVG LinkScanner is Making the Internet Clean and Safe, Half a Million Computers at a Time

Marks 500,000 LinkScanner Downloads Since Launch; Prevents Bad Guys from Forming New Botnets

Melbourne, Tuesday 12 August 2009 – AVG (AU/NZ) Pty Ltd, the Australian, New Zealand and South Pacific distributor of the world’s most frequently downloaded free anti-virus software, today announced the half-millionth download of AVG LinkScanner® software, a free product that protects consumers against web-based security threats and prevents their computers from being recruited for botnets like the ones that brought down Twitter and Facebook last week.

AVG LinkScanner Free Edition 8.5 for Windows is designed specifically to protect against Trojans, spyware, rootkits and other malware that tries to steal your private information via compromised web pages, where the bulk of computer infections are happening today. This includes backdoors that are created by infections that allow botnets the ability to access a computer.

LinkScanner provides an additional, invisible layer of protection that lets you search and surf the Web safely. Moreover, this protection is provided in real-time, which is the only way consumers can stay protected against transient threats — 60 percent of which last less than a day before moving on to another site — that occur even on well known and trusted websites.

“A few years ago we had the bad guys almost beaten by blocking their attacks with firewalls, email scanning engines and some simple heuristics. But then they created ways to exploit the websites that we all visit with a trusted browser,” said Lloyd Borrett, AVG (AU/NZ) Marketing Manager.

“The cyber criminals have become so good at it that even a trained eye can’t tell when a web page might be harvesting your private information or dropping some attack code onto your computer. That changed the game. AVG LinkScanner was created specifically to spot web-borne malware and alert computer users to hostile web pages. In real-time.”

In keeping with AVG’s promise to keep the Internet safe for all, AVG offers LinkScanner free for home use. AVG also lets LinkScanner work alongside most existing security software already present on consumers’ computers. This includes competitors’ software.

“We’re doing our part to stop the spread of cyberthreats; 500,000 customers protected by LinkScanner means that roughly eleven new botnets won’t be formed,” continued Borrett. “So, LinkScanner customers, go ahead and click where you want — we’ll keep you and the Internet safe.”

Where to Download

AVG LinkScanner Free Edition 8.5 for Windows can be can be downloaded free as a stand-alone product from http://www.avgfree.com.au. Hatena Co., Ltd. (Head Office: Kyoto, Japan, President & CEO Junya Kondo) is one of Japan’s leading web service providers with over 1,000,000 users, that developed one of Japan’s first online blogging services and operates Japan’s most popular social bookmarking service. Hatena is recognised as a cutting edge developer of the next generation of web services and its unique ability to quickly develop new technologies, as well as for hiring many of Japan’s most talented software engineers.

In December 2008, Hatena began working with Nintendo Co. , Ltd., also based in Kyoto, Japan, to cooperatively develop Flipnote Hatena, the world’s first Internet based user generated content service for the Nintendo DSi™ (named Ugomemo Hatena for the Japanese market). Flipnote Hatena is an animation/video sharing website for users of the free software title Flipnote Studio (called Ugoku Memocho in Japan) exclusively for the Nintendo DSi™.

The Flipnote Hatena service has been enjoying great popularity since its launch in Japan, with over 1,000,000 uploads during the first 6 months of operation. At this time, Hatena and Nintendo are pleased to announce the expansion and localisation of the Flipnote Hatena service for Australian/New Zealand and European release on August 14, 2009. The website will be viewable in 6 languages including English, French, German, Italian, Japanese and Spanish. An online service that works together with Flipnote Studio

Flipnote Studio is a software title for the Nintendo DSi™ that can be downloaded for free of charge. Flipnote Studio allows users to easily draw flipbook-like animated clips with sound by using the Nintendo DSi™ stylus, or create animations by importing photos taken with the Nintendo DSi™ Camera application. Users can upload, download and share their completed animations via the Internet by accessing the Flipnote Hatena website (http://flipnote.hatena.com/) directly from the Nintendo DSi™ application.

Free, safe, easy-to-use and family oriented: Flipnote Hatena

Users of the website can easily flag contents for removal which violate the community guidelines or are otherwise socially unacceptable in order to maintain a safe environment for users of all ages. Clips are divided into separate channels organised by themes for easy uploading and viewing, including a Beginner’s Channel. Animated clips uploaded to the service are ranked and listed by their popularity, and users can communicate interactively by adding handwritten comments to clips and “Stars” to show their appreciation of other users’ clips. In Japan Flipnote Hatena is popular with all ages of users including children, and the service offers children a easy, safe way to connect their Nintendo DSi™ to the Internet to upload clips and enjoy the service together with their parents.

TIME TO GET ANIMATED WITH YOUR NINTENDO DSi!

Download Flipnote Studio for free on Nintendo DSiWare and start sharing your cartoon creations

12 August 2009 – If you’ve ever wanted to create your own cartoons or animated movies, then head over to the Nintendo DSi Shop, as Flipnote Studio launches on 14 August in Australia and New Zealand on Nintendo DSiWare – and is downloadable for free!

Do you remember seeing old-fashioned flip-pads when you were a child? You draw a sequence of images, one per page. Flicking through the pages at speed creates the illusion of movement – which is exactly how cartoons are made today.

Flipnote Studio is an application which allows you to create these animations on your Nintendo DSi! Of course, you could use it just as an electronic notepad, allowing you to quickly save handwritten and even vocal memos – but why stop there? Get your creative juices flowing – Flipnote Studio is a virtual animation studio where you can create short animated sketches called Flipnotes. These can then be shared online via a special service accessible with the Nintendo DSi: Flipnote Hatena.

Using the Flipnote Hatena with Nintendo Wi-Fi connection, you are free to trade, grade and save animations from all Flipnote Studio users. It is even possible to continue a Flipnote created by another user. User-created Flipnotes can also be watched, evaluated and commented on devices such as a PC via the Nintendo DSi: Flipnote Hatena website. (http://flipnote.hatena.com/)

One single Flipnote animation can have hundreds of frames, meaning there is plenty of scope to get creative – but the software remains simple to use and no technical knowledge is required in order to create an animation.

The tools are very simple – a pen, eraser and paint brush, with three colours available: black, red and blue. You can adjust the speed of the Flipnote, copy and paste pages or ‘frames’ and even import photos as black and white images from the Nintendo DSi Camera Album.

Once an image is imported, its contrast and saturation can be adjusted using a slider system for different visual effects and an outline effect can be applied to make an image made up of outlines, as if drawn into the software. Use the Nintendo DSi’s microphone to record sounds for your Flipnote, such as music, speech or sound effects… Then you are ready to show and share your creation with your friends and family!

There are some additional tools for expert users – such as layering, shrinking, enlarging and advanced recording – and you can save your animation to an SD card to play on a friend’s Nintendo DSi.
Two users of Flipnote Studio may share Flipnotes using the Wireless Communication feature of the Nintendo DSi, and when Flipnotes have been shared between users, they can save each other as friends on the Nintendo DSi system and on Flipbook Hatena.

Head over to the Nintendo DSi Shop on 14 August, download Flipnote Studio for free and start creating your own cartoons!

Interview with Alexander Ludwig & Anna Sophia Robb (Race to Witch Mountain)

OUT OF THIS WORLD!
Race To Witch Mountain stars Alexander Ludwig and AnnaSophia Robb take us on an intergalactic voyage of discovery. Want the lowdown on UFOs, aliens and outer space? You got it!

First things first… Have you guys ever seen a UFO?
AnnaSophia: I think it’s really fun to believe in UFOs and aliens, but I haven’t experienced anything like that. I’m sure I know someone who thinks they’ve seen a UFO, though!
Alexander: Hey, are you talking about me?

Why? Have you seen a UFO, Alexander?
Alexander: Well, I was showing someone the Race To Witch Mountain trailer on the computer in my dad’s office the other day. I looked out of the window and I’m so sure I saw something! It was a clear sky, but this light started bouncing around the clouds.

Really?
Alexander: I’m not joking – and I’m not crazy! I thought it could be a reflection on buildings, but it was moving weirdly. It was especially trippy because I’d just seen the trailer to our alien movie. It was very strange.

How interested are you in the universe and outer space?
AnnaSophia: I love it!
Alexander: I like to think about where the universe stops. It’s so weird! How can the universe stop? Does it reach a brick wall or something? If that’s the case, what’s behind the brick wall? It’s such an amazing concept.
AnnaSophia: The universe just keeps expanding – but that seems impossible. It’s so weird, but wonderful.

Why is the galaxy so interesting?
Alexander: Because nobody knows too much about it. When you’re looking up at the stars, there are endless possibilities. There’s so much that hasn’t been explored. I always get a weird feeling in my stomach when I think about it.
AnnaSophia: Me too. I feel so small in comparison to the universe. There’s such a fascination with it because there’s so much we don’t know about it. You can believe anything you want because nobody can really disprove it.

Would you like to zoom off into outer space?
Alexander: It would be an amazing experience to take a flight into space.
AnnaSophia: That would be so cool! I’m studying astronomy in Science at school right now – and I’m loving it. Being an astronaut would be crazy. I’d be terrified, but I would love the experience.

What part of the galaxy would you most like to explore?
Alexander: When I’m 80 or something, I really want to get in touch with NASA and say, ‘Send me through a black hole!’ I want to see what happens. I’ve always been fascinated with black holes because nobody knows what they are. By the time I’m 80, I’ll be up for it. I don’t know why nobody hasn’t done it before.

Maybe you can save up some money and build your own spaceship?
Alexander: Wow! Now, that’s a good idea. Didn’t a Russian guy pay $20million to go into space? I would love to do that.

What supernatural powers would you most like to have?
AnnaSophia: I think my character’s powers of telekinesis are pretty awesome in the movie. I can move objects with my mind, which would be a great skill to have. My character can read minds, which is also pretty handy.

What about you, Alexander?
Alexander: I’d love to fly. I’m always flying in my dreams, so sign me up for super flying lessons any day!

Did you have to research aliens and the universe for your roles in Race To Witch Mountain?
AnnaSophia: When we started work on the movie, the director showed us a lot of footage about aliens, UFOs and conspiracy theories. He showed us some really cool alien videos to get us pumped up about UFOs.
Alexander: His office looks like it belongs to a 12-year-old boy! There are posters, UFOs and loads of crazy stuff in there, so you’re surrounded by the subject.

That sounds like a lot of fun…
Alexander: It was! We watched loads of documentaries on UFOs, which really make you believe. You really start questioning everything. One of the documentaries said that the universe is so big that it would be really egotistical to think we’re the only living beings. I really think that’s true.
AnnaSophia: There are also some amazing conspiracy theories out there. You know what? Our universe is so big that there has to be something else out there.

Was it difficult to play aliens in the movie?
AnnaSophia: I talked to the director a lot about my character and her powers because no-one really knows what aliens look like or how these powers should be displayed. It was cool because we could just make it up.
Alexander: AnnaSophia’s character has to talk to me through telekinesis, which was very fun to act out. We also had to work together to create our roles because they have to be similar. It was all pretty cool.

Right… So if there are aliens out there in the universe, what do they look like?
AnnaSophia: I have absolutely no idea! My mind goes wild when I think about things like this. I would love to imagine them as changing colors and having mad tentacles. That would be so weird, but very cool – just like Flubber.
Alexander: I wouldn’t want them to look like us because that would be such a letdown. Imagine meeting someone from Mars and they looked just like yourself. It would be disappointing. A Flubber alien is much more fun – and way cooler.
