Dell, Intel and Revolution Analytics Collaborate to Launch Big Data Innovation Center in Singapore

Center to be Equipped with Advanced Analytic Infrastructure and Software;

Aims to Speed Solutions Development for Big Data Market in Asia

News Highlights:

  • Unique regional big data analytics center launched in      Singapore by Dell, Intel and Revolution Analytics
  • Dell, Intel and Revolution Analytics customers as well      as ISVs will have access to test big data proof-of-concept initiatives at      the center
  • The facility will reside at the Dell Solution Center      (DSC) and will also provide big data analytics training

SINGAPORE, June 3, 2013 – Dell, Intel Corporation, and Revolution Analytics today announced the creation of the Big Data Innovation Center in Singapore. The new center brings together expertise across all three organizations to provide extensive training programs, proof-of-concept capabilities and solution development support on big data and predictive analytic innovations for Asia market.

In a world where analytics, big data and cloud are converging, the need to manage, monitor and predict business outcomes and market readiness is also changing. The prevalence of tablets, smart phones and social media also increase the urgency to mine intelligence from the tons of raw data, in turn prodding more companies and governments to beef up their big data plans.

Industry analyst firm International Data Corp (IDC) projects the global big data technology and services market to grow at a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 31.7 percent – about seven times the rate of the overall information and communications technology (ICT) market – with revenues reaching US$23.8 billion by 2016. IDC expects big data spending in the Asia-Pacific excluding Japan to reach US$603 million in 2013, up 42.6 percent over 2012.

“The global market for big data analytics is growing at a rapid pace, and businesses in Singapore are uniquely suited to capitalize on this trend,” said Laurence Liew, Managing Director of Revolution Analytics Asia-Pacific. “The launch of the Big Data Innovation Center is in line with the Singapore government’s focus on big data and predictive analytics, and we are pleased to partner with Dell and Intel and as our big data analytics training platform. We look forward to delivering the necessary skill sets and big data analytics training to companies, while tapping on the vast expertise from Dell and Intel.”

The Big Data Innovation Center will be housed at the Dell Solution Center (DSC) in Singapore, where training will be done on a big data stack that includes Dell infrastructure using latest Intel® Xeon® E5 processor-based servers, Intel 10GbE networking and Intel Solid State Drives with Cache Acceleration Software, the Intel® Distribution for Apache Hadoop* Software and Revolution Analytics Enterprise R predictive analytics software. Revolution Analytics will also use the center to provide a state-of-the-art big data analytics platform to train professionals to become data scientists.

The launch of the Big Data Innovation Center provides the platform for companies to test-run big data initiatives and proof-of-concepts for deployment. It will also see the commencement of training where participants will be equipped with the necessary skills to improve the quality of data mining across a wider range of platforms from a larger pool of sources. Apart from the regular training courses, candidates can also attend seminars, workshops and events hosted at the Dell Solution Center.

“Intel is committed to providing the industry with a better foundation from which it can push the limits of innovation and realize the transformational opportunity of big data,” said Boyd Davis, vice president and general manager of Intel’s Datacenter Software Division. “The collaboration with Dell and Revolution Analytics are a realization of our vision for helping customers, organizations, governments and ISVs in the Southeast Asia region to maximize the growing market opportunities and drive new projects forward.”

Dell has transformed itself into a solutions company, having announced 20 acquisitions within the last three to four years to expand its enterprise capabilities. “We have robust, industry-standard x86 servers for big data requirements,” said Sumir Bhatia, Dell’s enterprise solutions director for South Asia. “We have set up what could be the industry’s first proof-of-concept stack on x86 infrastructure with the Intel Distribution for Apache Hadoop and Revolution Analytics engine. Companies that need to test-run their big data workloads and initiatives can make use of this facility to understand how big a difference it could make in their business.”

Surviving an Adventure Documentary’ Master-class at the Apple Store, Sydney

Clark Carter and Julian Harvey discuss “The Crossing”

The Story of the First Adventurers to Walk across Victoria Island

Sydney Australia…June 3, 2013….

Don’t miss the unique opportunity to hear Clark Carter discuss the trials and tribulations of shooting the film, “The Crossing”, while surviving sub-zero temperatures, razor sharp rocks and dangerous wildlife at the free ‘how to survive an adventure documentary’ master-class on Tuesday June 18, 2013 from 6pm at the Apple Store, Sydney (367 George St).

Clark Carter will be joined by the film’s director, co-founder of Distracted Media and adventurer, Julian Harvey, who will provide valuable insight into how he pieced together 100 hours of footage into an 85 minute feature documentary.

In addition to being announced as one of ten finalists in the 2013 Foxtel Australian Documentary Prize category in this year’s Sydney Film Festival* (Thursday June 6, 2013 at 6.15pm at Event Cinemas, George St, Sydney), “The Crossing” will cross the Tasman to be shown at the prestigious New Zealand Mountain Film Festival on Sunday July 7 at 4.00pm in Wanaka on the South Island.

The award-winning filmmakers of Australian horror film, The Tunnel partnered with the Australian adventurers four years ago.  Directed by Julian Harvey and with the support of Australian Geographic, iiNet and Gore-Tex®, the feature documentary details the first attempt in 2005 by Clark Carter and Chris Bray to navigate Victoria Island in the Arctic Circle.  It will then recount when the pair returned in 2008 to finally complete the expedition.

“The Crossing” is a feature documentary following two young Australians, Clark Carter and Chris Bray as they set off on the adventure of a lifetime. The pair attempted to drag their home-made kayaks more than one thousand kilometres across a remote island in the arctic.  Their story is equal parts rock n’ roll and youthful exuberance, resulting in disaster! They battled freezing temperatures, knee-deep mud, razor sharp rocks, got chased by wolves and hid from polar bears until finally being forced to admit their dream was over.

After 58 days alone in the wilderness, they had covered only a third of the distance. Unable to let go of their dream, three years later Clark and Chris confidently returned to finish the job. They were a little older, wiser and thought they knew what to expect from the island. They re-designed and re-built a custom cart to carry the five hundred kilograms of food and equipment needed to survive a hundred days in the arctic. After a positive start, things yet again take a turn for the worse. The duo soon realised the island isn’t going to let them across without a fight.

Edited from more than a hundred hours of stunning high definition footage shot by Clark Carter and Chris Bray, “The Crossing” is an insight into the minds of two young adventurers biting off far more than they can chew. This story is an antidote to a world of instant gratification, showing that you can achieve anything – but sometimes there ain’t no easy way.
