Symantec and VMware Partner to Deliver Extensive Protection for Virtual and Cloud Environments

Symantec Provides Broad Security and Compliance Portfolio Integration with the VMware Cloud Infrastructure Suite

Sydney, AUSTRALIA – 29 February 2012 – Symantec Corp. (NASDAQ: SYMC) and VMware (NYSE: VMW) today announced five new security integrations with the VMware cloud infrastructure suite, designed to deliver extensive protection for virtual and cloud environments along with operational cost savings. With new VMware integrations, Symantec enables joint customers to protect their virtual infrastructure and business-critical applications with data loss prevention, IT risk and compliance, data centre protection, security information and event management (SIEM) and endpoint protection solutions – delivering stronger security, scalability and cost reductions for rapid services delivery and enhanced business agility for the cloud.

“Companies today face an increasingly toxic threat landscape. True information protection is more than antivirus. With our new VMware integrations, we’re enabling customers to proactively protect their information whether it’s in a physical or virtual environment,” said Francis deSouza, group president, enterprise products and services, Symantec. “Together, Symantec and VMware are taking protection to the next level to give companies confidence to fully embrace virtualisation and realise the cost savings and efficiency it brings.”

“The unique security concerns of the cloud extend well beyond malware protection,” said Raghu Raghuram, senior vice president and general manager, Cloud Infrastructure and Management, VMware. “The integration of Symantec products with the VMware cloud infrastructure suite will offer fundamentally new security capabilities to accelerate the ability of customers to quickly and safely realise the benefits of cloud computing.”

Symantec and VMware will continue to collaborate to ensure customers have both the security and compliance controls necessary for cloud deployments, both on- and off-premises. In addition to integration between Symantec endpoint security offerings with VMware vShield™ Endpoint expected to be available later in 2012, Symantec is introducing five new integrations with the VMware cloud infrastructure suite:

Orchestrated Data Loss Prevention
Symantec Data Loss Prevention, available now, addresses the growing challenge organisations face in finding and protecting their intellectual property wherever it resides. Integration with VMware vShield App enables Symantec customers to more easily find and locate their most valuable information across their virtual environments. Symantec Data Loss Prevention makes it easier for customers to identify and remediate potential data loss in their virtual environments by automatically separating virtual machines that contain sensitive information from those that do not.

Reduced Compliance Deficiencies Across Converged Infrastructure
Symantec Control Compliance Suite , available now, uses centralised vulnerability and control assessments to provide seamless discovery of unknown or unauthorised virtual machines to reduce security risk in the physical and virtual infrastructure. Leveraging VMware-published security standards, Control Compliance Suite is also able to assess virtual settings to identify areas of risk and help prioritise remediation efforts. This helps prevent application failure or data corruption on virtual machines, while facilitating compliance with mandates such as PCI or HIPAA. In addition, Control Compliance Suite can ensure that the VMware process guidelines are being followed with procedural questionnaires while automatically reporting on configuration changes, patch levels and critical policy violations on VMware vSphere®.

Protect Virtual Data Centres Against Advanced Threats
Symantec Critical System Protection currently protects ESX® guest and hypervisors with granular, policy-based controls. Symantec plans to add support for VMware vSphere 5 in Spring 2012, leveraging out-of-the-box VMware-prescribed server security policies for ESXi and VMware vCenter™ that will enable organisations to identify server compliance violations and suspicious activity in real-time, limit administrative control, restrict network communications and prevent file and configuration tampering of the virtual infrastructure. Because Symantec Critical System Protection is a non-signature, policy-based technology it also allows organisations to stop unauthorised services from running on servers and protect against zero-day attacks, without impacting system performance.

Integrated Threat Intelligence
Symantec Security Information Manager (SSIM), available in Summer 2012, will enable organisations to seamlessly identify and respond to security threats that impact business critical applications across both their physical and virtual infrastructures. Through integration with the VMware vShield log management collector, SSIM will correlate virtual machine activity with events from the physical environment as well as the Symantec’s global intelligence network to give a holistic view of an organisation’s security posture. Customers will be able to perform malicious activity assessments for their entire environment—physical and virtual— gaining immediate insight into malicious activity and threats inside their virtual infrastructure.

Symantec’s Managed Security Service (MSS) will also offer a VMware vShield log management collector to allow customers who prefer a cloud-based service delivery model to benefit from a seamless view of security threats across both their physical and virtual environments. The addition of the vShield log management collector to already broad array of devices and applications MSS monitors, will further extend MSS edge-to-endpoint visibility and when combined with global threat intelligence and 7×24 access to GIAC-certified Security Analysts will allow organisations to reduce exposure to threats and business disruption. The vShield log management collector is expected to be available in Summer 2012.

Optimised Endpoint Protection for High-density Virtual Environments
Symantec plans to leverage VMware vShield Endpoint with its endpoint security offerings to maximise performance in Virtual Desktop Infrastructure (VDI) and virtual server environments without sacrificing powerful security. Available in the second half of 2012, these solutions will offload critical security analysis from protected virtual machines to a dedicated security virtual appliance resulting in optimised scan performance, reduced resource utilisation, and increased management visibility. Built upon Symantec Insight , these solutions will provide fast and effective endpoint security for VMware environments, offering unique protection against modern polymorphic malware, zero-day attacks and rootkits.

HEIST: The Score

Apple has given the all clear for HEIST: The Score to be released on the 2nd of March, so it’s now time to revisit the blue prints, check your ammo and put the bank robbery plan into action! Heist tells the thrilling story of a daring bank robbery set in the prohibition era of 1920’s America. A carefully comprised plan with as little mess as possible turns horribly wrong, leaving you to fight your way out of an impossible situation. What are you willing to do to come out on top?

You begin the story as a low level enforcer for the mafia working under the enigmatic Salvatore Da Luca, a veteran from the recently ended Great War. Once he inspired acts of valour in the trenches, now he uses those same qualities for greed and corruption by liberating banks of their excess holdings.

Sal doesn’t work alone, his trusted associate Giuseppe Gallo always teams up for the score. He’s known as the loose cannon who can wind up being more trouble than he’s worth. Shoot first; ask question later is how he operates. He has a grudge with the world, and he’s not too fond of you either. You better make sure not to put a foot wrong.

The bank just opened and the scores all set, are you in?

INTEGRATED CARRIER BILLING GAINS MOMENTUM ON BLACKBERRY APP WORLD

Carriers Experience 120% increase in BlackBerry app downloads

Mobile World Congress, Barcelona, Spain – 27th February 2012 – Research In Motion (NASDAQ: RIMM; TSX: RIM) today announced that more than 40 carriers around the world have now deployed integrated carrier billing for their customers on BlackBerry App World™.

Carriers offering integrated billing on BlackBerry App World include:

  • A1      Telekom (Austria)
  • AT&T      (United States)
  • Bell      (Canada)
  • Digicel      (25 markets in the Caribbean and Latin America)
  • Indosat      (Indonesia)
  • Rogers      Wireless (Canada)
  • SFR      (France)
  • Telefonica      (UK)
  • T-Mobile      (United States)
  • Telus      (Canada)
  • Telstra      (Australia)
  • Vodafone      (Spain, Greece, Italy, Ireland, Portugal, United Kingdom &      Netherlands)

BlackBerry App World is now available in 164 markets and territories worldwide. More than 60,000 apps are currently available on RIM’s app store and over 174 million apps are downloaded each month. Over two billion apps have been downloaded to date.

The deployment of integrated carrier billing is an example of RIM’s ongoing commitment to work together strategically with its carrier partners and it has proven to drive significant value for the whole mobile ecosystem, including carriers, developers, content providers and customers. Integrated carrier billing enables a user to purchase apps or digital goods (such as the additional chapters of an e-book or additional levels of a computer game) without interrupting the user’s app experience. They can simply charge the purchase to their regular monthly bill, and both one-off and recurring (subscription-based) purchases are supported.

Data suggests that customers’ propensity to purchase apps on BlackBerry App World increases when carrier billing is offered. After implementing carrier billing on BlackBerry App World, carriers on average experienced a 120% increase in BlackBerry app purchases by their customers, with 65-70% of their customers’ purchases being transacted through the carrier.

Dario Talmesio, Principal Analyst, Informa Telecoms & Media, said: “There are clear business benefits for mobile operators when implementing carrier billing, since it enables them to build upon existing billing relationships with customers. RIM has always adopted a strategy of working constructively with operators. It follows therefore that implementing carrier billing through BlackBerry App World represents a rich opportunity for carriers.”

Ronjon Nag, Vice President, App World & Intelligent Systems at RIM, said, “We’re delighted that many of our carrier partners around the world have recognised the value that integrated billing provides, by making it easy and convenient for customers to purchase BlackBerry apps. RIM remains committed to continued innovation in the way we align with our partners in order to best serve customers while providing a profitable platform for the whole mobile ecosystem.”

Announces Smartphone Device Engagements with Orange*, Lava*, ZTE* and Visa*

Discloses Range of New Smartphone SoCs and Communications Products

MOBILE WORLD CONGRESS, Barcelona, Spain, Feb. 28, 2012 – Intel Corporation President and CEO Paul Otellini today detailed a number of announcements and plans aimed at expanding the company’s smartphone product portfolio and customer ecosystem, including strategic new engagements with Orange*, Lava International Ltd.*, ZTE*, and Visa*.

“We are very pleased to add new, important customers and capabilities to our phone offerings today. We remain focused on delivering exciting new features and outstanding performance to smartphone customers around the world.” said Otellini.

Otellini made the announcements during an Intel news conference at Mobile World Congress. He also highlighted the company’s plans to expand its smartphone SoC and communications product roadmaps for the performance and value smartphone market segments.

New Smartphone Customer Engagements

Building on strategic engagements with Motorola Mobility Inc.* and Lenovo *, Intel detailed new device relationships with Orange, Lava International Ltd. and ZTE.

Yves Maitre, Orange senior vice president of Mobile Multimedia and Devices, joined Otellini to discuss a new Orange smartphone based on the Intel® Atom™ processor Z2460 reference design. Housed in a sleek body, the design enables rich entertainment experiences and Orange services, including Orange TV, Daily Motion, Deezer, Orange Wednesdays and Orange Gestures. The Orange smartphone will be available in the United Kingdom and France later this summer.

Intel also announced plans to enter the high-growth market for smartphones in India through an alliance with Lava International Ltd., one of the fastest-growing Indian mobile handset companies.  Vishal Sehgal, Lava co-founder and board director, announced the launch of XOLO Smartphone by Lava. The XOLO X900 is based on Intel’s smartphone reference design and will be the first Intel technology-based smartphone in the India market. The device will be available from top retail outlets early in the second quarter of 2012 and will support major Indian cellular networks.

Similar to its previously announced partnership with Motorola Mobility, Intel also announced a multi-year mobile device collaboration across smartphones and tablets with global handset maker ZTE. Mr. He Shiyou, executive vice president and head of the Terminal Division of ZTE, discussed how his company’s alliance with Intel will enable ZTE to move faster and create unique and differentiated products for wireless operators. He also announced that ZTE’s first Intel-powered mobile device is scheduled to debut in the second half of 2012.

Expanding Smartphone SoC and Communications Roadmaps

Building on its ecosystem engagements, Intel announced plans for three new smartphone SoC products that expand the company’s portfolio from the performance-to-value market segments.

Extending the leading performance and energy efficiency of the Intel™ Atom® processor Z2460, formerly codenamed “Medfield,” Intel announced that the platform will now support speeds up to 2GHz.

Intel also announced the Atom™ Z2580 processor that doubles the performance of the Atom processor Z2460, and features an advanced multimode LTE/3G/2G solution. Intel will sample the Z2580 in the second half of the year with customer products scheduled in the first half of 2013.

Addressing the growing handset opportunity in emerging markets where consumers look for more value at lower prices, Intel disclosed plans for the Intel® Atom™ processor Z2000.

The Z2000 is aimed squarely at the value smartphone market segment, which industry sources predict could reach up to 500 million units by 20151. The platform includes a 1.0 GHz Atom CPU offering great graphics and video performance, and the ability to access the Web and play Google Android* games. It also supports the Intel® XMM 6265 3G HSPA+ modem with Dual-SIM 2G/3G, offering flexibility on data/voice calling plans to save on costs. Intel will sample the Z2000 in mid-2012 with customer products scheduled by early 2013.

Building on these 32nm announcements, Otellini discussed how the Atom™ processor will outpace Moore’s Law and announced that Intel will ship 22nm SoCs for carrier certification next year, and is already in development on 14nm SoC technology.

In 2011, Intel shipped in more than 400 million cellular platforms. Building on this market segment position, Intel announced the XMM 7160 , an advanced multimode LTE/3G/2G platform with support for 100Mbps downlink and 50Mbps uplink, and support for HSPA+ 42Mbps. Intel will sample the product in the second quarter with customer designs scheduled to launch by the end of 2012.

Intel also announced that it is sampling the XMM 6360 platform, a new slim modem 3G HSPA+ solution supporting 42Mbps downlink and 11.5Mbps uplink for small form factors.

Building Better Experiences on Intel Architecture

Intel’s strategy is to create and enable engaging, consistent, aware and secure user experiences across a range of mobile devices.

An emerging trend is the use of mobile devices to enable secure online and retail commerce. Otellini welcomed John Partridge, President, Visa Inc., who announced a strategic multi-year alliance to develop mobile commerce solutions tailored to consumers in developed and developing countries.

The effort includes collaboration across a range of Visa mobile services and Intel® Atom™-based smartphones and tablets to deliver compelling and secure user services. As a first step, Partridge announced that Intel’s smartphone reference design is now certified for Visa payWave* mobile financial transactions. This means that customer products based on Intel’s smartphone reference design will have time-to-market support of Visa mobile services.

Building on its collaboration with Google , Intel continues to work closely with ISVs to help ensure the majority of Android apps run on Intel Atom processor-based devices. Otellini discussed how Intel has all the right tools and expertise to support the robust mobile application developer ecosystem.

SYDNEY, Australia – Mobile World Congress 2012 – 28 February 2012 – Symantec Corp. (Nasdaq: SYMC) today announced significant advances in core areas of its enterprise mobility strategy across Android, iOS and Windows Phone 7 platforms. These advances help customers secure mobile data and enable business productivity across both corporate managed and personally owned unmanaged devices by providing cross-platform, multi-application protection. Key highlights include:

Symantec is empowering enterprises to foster mobile productivity by enabling new business models that rely on diverse mobile devices and innovative mobile applications. Symantec’s modular enterprise mobility platform will allow these services to be delivered via on-prem and SaaS models, as part of existing security and management solutions, to drive operational efficiencies and lower total-cost-of-ownership.

“Our recent State of Mobility Survey highlighted that 59 percent of enterprises are making line-of-business applications accessible from mobile devices, representing a dramatic shift in the nature of mobility from an email extension to a core business enabler,” said CJ Desai, senior vice president, Endpoint and Mobility Group, Symantec. “Symantec is at the forefront of enabling enterprise productivity. This announcement advances Symantec’s enterprise mobility strategy by enhancing capabilities in device management, threat protection and enterprise integration.

Device Management

For enterprises that need a solution to centrally secure and manage mobile devices and applications, Mobile Management includes security policy management and application management for Android, iOS and Windows Mobile 7 platforms. According to Symantec’s State of Mobility Survey , 67 percent of enterprises are concerned with malware attacks spreading from mobile devices to internal networks. With multiple app stores and unchecked applications, Android is a frequent target for malware, raising the possibility of data theft and browser-based phishing attacks. In response, Symantec plans to bring its anti-malware technology and global intelligence network capabilities to the Android platform with Mobile Security for Android. With the release of Mobile Security for Android, Symantec will help prevent rogue applications from stealing corporate and personal data and will enable safe web browsing. This solution will be generally available in late summer 2012.

Enterprise Integration

According to the same survey, 65 percent of enterprises cited data loss as one of their top concerns for mobile adoption. Symantec addresses the problem with Data Loss Prevention for Tablets, which is now generally available. Available first for the iPad, this solution monitors and controls the transmission of confidential data by applying industry leading fingerprinting and advanced machine learning technologies. Combined with Symantec’s recent release of Mobile Management, Data Loss Prevention for Tablets provides the industry’s strongest closed-loop solution to enable organisations to support business productivity and personal use concurrently across corporate and personal email, web communications and native applications.

No enterprise data is secure without proper access and authentication policies in place. To enable strong user and device authentication to enterprise networks and applications, Mobile Management is integrated with the new Managed PKI Service v8.3, which includes certificate management enhancements for iOS devices. This simplified integration automates the steps involved in extending PKI systems to mobile devices for user identity and authorisation, speeding the time to value with a user friendly, transparent process.

With 31 percent of IT personnel currently dealing with mobile related initiatives,  driving efficiency and lower total-cost-of-ownership is paramount. To deliver a broader array of choices for enterprises to manage their mobile deployments, Symantec will be making its enterprise mobility platform available. This console-agnostic platform will help Symantec extend its reach in the protection of mobile users by allowing enterprises, partners and telcos to quickly and efficiently integrate their offerings with a common web services and agent architecture.

In combination with Symantec O3 – the company’s cloud information protection platform – the Symantec enterprise mobility platform will enable secure usage of cloud apps from mobile devices. This combination provides layered information security and information management controls on the device and in the cloud to secure native applications as well as SaaS use-cases. With support for a wide variety of cloud apps and services and integration with wide variety of identity sources, Symantec enables innovative business models created in the confluence of cloud and mobile technologies.
