MADMAN ACQUIRES studio ghibli’s KARI-GURASHI no ARRIETTY

Madman is proud to announce the acquisition of KARI-GURASHI no ARRIETTY, the latest masterwork from the Academy Award®-winning Studio Ghibli.

Based on Mary Norton’s much-loved children’s fantasy novel series THE BORROWERS, KARI-GURASHI no ARRIETTY revolves around 14-year-old Arrietty and the rest of her family – a race of “tiny people” who live in peaceful anonymity under the floorboards as they make their own home from items ‘borrowed’ from the house’s human inhabitants.

Hayao Miyazaki, Studio Ghibli founder and director of such award-winning films as SPIRITED AWAY and HOWL’S MOVING CASTLE, wrote the screenplay and supervised the production of ARRIETTY. The film also marks the directorial debut of animator Hiromasa Yonebayashi, the youngest person ever to direct a film for Studio Ghibli.

KARI-GURASHI no ARRIETTY spent 11 of its 15 weeks in the Kogyo Tsushinsha Japanese box-office charts residing in the top 10, and since its premiere on July 11, had grossed in excess U.S. $110 million at the end of its theatrical run.

Madman will release ARRIETTY in Australian cinemas in 2011.
