GOOD HAIR

When asked by his five year-old daughter why she doesn’t have “good hair”, the hilarious Chris Rock (EVERYBODY HATES CHRIS) began a raucous personal adventure, visiting Indian temples, laboratories, hair salons and more to discover the truth behind the American black community’s obsession with the scalp.

Featuring interviews with Ice-T, Salt-n-Pepa, Eve and the Reverand Al Sharpton, Rock examines the effects of scalp-stripping relaxant, ‘touch them and you die’ weaves and the financial and personal lengths some people will go to in the search for ‘good hair’.

A return to form, to the heyday of the ground-breaking genre of J-Horror! THE GRUDGE: WHITE GHOST/BLACK GHOST showcases two brand new skin-crawling stories centred on the nightmarish curse of the original film.

WHITE GHOST tells the story of a failed, disillusioned man who kills five members of his family, one by one, before hanging himself. At the moment of his death, he makes a cassette tape which, when listened to, re-awakens the deadly curse.

BLACK GHOST is the tale of Nurse Yuko, who is left in charge of a young girl, Fukie. When strange things start to happen, Nurse Yuko discovers a cyst in Fukie’s body which turns out to be the Grudge-carrying body of the girl’s unborn twin!

KAMUI

CHUCK CLOSE

One of the world’s leading contemporary painters, Chuck Close reinvented portraiture. In an inventive new process, Close photographs his subjects, blows up the image to gigantic proportions, divides it into a detailed grid and then uses a complex set of colors and patterning to reconstruct each face. The genius of this film is not only to allow the artist to illuminate his methodology (he is wonderfully articulate), but also to feature his friends and colleagues (Brice Marden, Robert Storr, Dorothea Rockburne, Philip Glass, Arne Glimcher, Kiki Smith, Elizabeth Murray, Alex Katz, Kirk Varnedoe, among others) who make important contributions to appreciating Close’s gifts.

THE LAST BATTLE

In August, Australian audiences will be able to re-acquaint themselves with the work of master filmmaker Luc Besson, whose award-winning dramas SUBWAY and THE FIFTH ELEMENT captured the imaginations of countless people world wide. Besson’s first ever feature film, THE LAST BATTLE, is set in a post-apocalyptic wasteland in which human beings must fight for survival.

In the near-future, a global disaster has left the world on the verge of collapse. The sky rains fish; skyscrapers lie buried in mountains of sand; and the few remaining humans are unable to talk, shuffling through the wasteland searching for food, shelter and a glimpse of humanity. The Man (Pierre Jolivet) longs for female companionship, so he cobbles together a serviceable plane and takes off for the city, where survivors shelter in the bodies of burnt-out cars. Here, The Man finds himself in a bitter battle against the vengeful and murderous Brute (Jean Reno).
