New Mac antivirus staves off rotten apples BitDefender Antivirus for Mac OS X launched today to protect against increasing Mac-related threats

SYDNEY & AUCKLAND 19 May, 2010 BitDefender®, an award-winning provider of innovative anti-malware security solutions, today announced the release of its first antivirus solutions designed specifically for Mac OS X users, BitDefender Antivirus for Mac, as well as a bundle pack for Mac and Windows PC dual-boot users to address the growing Mac-related threats.

Building on BitDefender’s extensive experience fighting PC threats, BitDefender Antivirus for Mac proactively secures Mac computer systems from viruses, whilst also detecting and removing malware threats. It also protects against threats targeting other platforms which may then pass through the Mac environment.

In addition, as many Mac users run Windows and OS X platforms on the same system, BitDefender is also offering a BitDefender antivirus bundle pack which offers users the flexibility to protect either operating system with the same award-winning level of protection. This solution also eliminates any potential conflicts with loading two separate antivirus programs onto the same system, and is perfect for users of Apple’s Boot Camp utility.

Rising threats to Macs
Malware writers are increasingly creating threats to exploit the vulnerabilities in Mac OS X and popular Mac applications. There are currently more than 270 different e-threats that specifically target Mac OS X operating systems, with the number expected to rise exponentially. These range from JavaScript-based advertisements to domain name server (DNS) changing malware and hijack browsing sessions.

“Although there are fewer threats targeted towards Mac users, it only takes one infection to lose sensitive information, valuable data or an identity. It’s critical that businesses and consumers recognise the growing vulnerability of their Mac systems and take the necessary steps to protect their sensitive information to ensure their system remains safe,” said Catalin Cosoi, BitDefender senior researcher.
