In Fathom, Fox plays a young woman named Aspen who was discovered at sea by a cruise ship, and later learns she is a member of a race of aquatic humanoids who possess the ability to control water.
Nonetheless, the project Fox talks about with most passion remains Fathom, the comic-book adaption she has pursed voraciously.
The tale of Aspen Matthews, a former Olympic swimmer turned marine biologist, was attached to another actress at one stage but Fox sought out the comic’s creator Michael Turner.
“I wanted to make my case”, she admits. “I was such a fan, I really wanted the opportunity to portray her. I didn’t want someone who doesn’t love her playing her because then it will just be another bullshit popcorn movie.”
The pitched worked. Turner was persuaded. The film went into development this spring. Fox is producing as well as starring (Turner died of complications from bone cancer last summer but will be credited as Executive Producer).
“Comparing myself to a comic-book character sounds stupid” says Fox, “but as a kid I was really serious about swimming competitively. Like the character, I had to stop, for certain reasons… there are just similarities to my life that made obsessively love this comic book. It was like an escape and validation at the same time.”
