Lenovo Statement on PC Industry Rankings

Today, IDC reported that Lenovo has narrowed the gap with HP in the global PC industry share rankings to 0.2%, while Gartner reported Lenovo has now taken the lead in worldwide PC sales by a margin of 0.2%. The difference between IDC and Gartner numbers is largely based on how the two firms calculate numbers for certain products (specifically the inclusion of workstations).

The preliminary IDC data shows Lenovo achieving record market share of approximately 15.7% and record quarterly shipment volume of approximately 13.8 million units, while Gartner’s also preliminary reported Lenovo had a market share of 15.7% and shipments of 13.8 million units, ahead of HP who came in at 15.5%. This represents 10.2% year on year growth for Lenovo by IDC’s estimates and 9.8% year on year growth, according to Gartner. Following 3 years as the fastest-growing PC maker among the world’s top vendors and 14 quarters outpacing the overall market (according to IDC), the data demonstrates continued momentum for Lenovo.

The following statement is attributable to Lenovo Chairman and CEO Yuanqing Yang:

“Analyst figures released today reaffirm that Lenovo has continued momentum in the marketplace and that our formula for success – a clear strategy, innovative products, great execution and a strong, diverse global team – continues to work.  We know the PC market is highly competitive, but also firmly believe there is room for continued profitable growth in this space.

Becoming the clear leader in global PC share of course remains one of Lenovo’s aspirations, but it also only represents one more milestone in our journey as a company and our mission to become the leader in the PC+ era.  This includes PCs, tablets, smart phone, smart TV, cloud and enterprise computing.  Our goal is to make Lenovo not only a leading PC+ brand, but also one of the most respected companies in the world.

We are setting our sights on delivering long term, profitable growth, while leading the way forward into the PC+ era. To achieve this, we have a clear strategy and we are step by step building a company that is both globally connected and fully localised. We are establishing even deeper roots in each major market around the world. In addition to localised sales and distribution teams in major markets, we are establishing an even stronger manufacturing footprint; investing in R&D; and ensuring that top local talents are in place to build a strong competitive advantage and a winning business. This global reach with local excellence sees us creating a “global local” company and positions us to more deeply implement our Protect and Attack strategy, the foundation for our long term success.

Today’s numbers are of course encouraging, and Lenovo will continue to execute our strategy, deliver great new products, and grow our business around the world so we can achieve all of our goals over time.”
