Los Angeles, 1928: on a Saturday morning, in a working-class suburb, Christine Collins (Jolie) said goodbye to her young son Walter and left for work. When she comes home, she discovers he has vanished. Soon after a search ensues, and months later to Christine’s initial relief a boy claiming to be the nine-year-old is returned. However after meeting him Christine discovers the boy is not her son. Despite this she is convinced to take him home amid a sea of confusion, media circus and pressure from corrupt police.
As Christine pushes authorities to keep looking for her son, she learns that in prohibition-era Los Angeles, women don’t challenge the system and live to tell the tale. Slandered as delusional and an unfit mother, Christine finds an ally in activist Reverend Briegleb (Malkovich), who gives her the support and strength to fight the City to look for her missing boy.
