Doug (Rhys Darby), a hard working Kiwi bloke, and a huge musical fan of Queen, suddenly finds himself dumped by long?term girlfriend Susan (Faye Smythe). Just before he lunges into a pit of self?sorry, Doug finds himself seeking solace in a newfound friend, an injured New Zealand Shelduck.

Doug meets Holly (Sally Hawkins), the local animal specialist, while seeking advice about a noisy situation with his quacking friend. Just as romance beings to spark between the two, ex?girlfriend Susan has a change of heart.
