Top young designers showcased at Melbourne Museum

The Creepy Spooksville pinball machine, a conversation seat, a coat inspired by a babushka doll and the graphic design for the flagship vehicle of ‘Oatomobile’ porridge are just some of the outstanding works featured in Top Designs 2011.

In its 11th year at Melbourne Museum, Top Designs showcases the works of some of Victoria’s most exceptional emerging designers. Featuring 122 works by 108 students from government, Catholic and independent schools across Victoria, the exhibition includes everything from furniture and fashion to graphic design and photography.

“It’s exciting to see such a diversity of works by talented and imaginative young designers”, said Brett Dunlop, Manager, Melbourne Museum. “Top Designs represents an amazing opportunity for students to exhibit their work in the museum and for visitors to get a look at the future of design in Australia”

All the works on show were produced as part of VCE studies in the disciplines of Media, Design and Technology, Food and Technology, Visual Communication and Design, Systems Engineering and VET Interactive Digital Media. 285 students were shortlisted for the exhibition from over 1,500 applications, with the exhibitors selected by six specialist panellists.

Folios and design plans are exhibited alongside the works, providing visitors with an insight into the development of each design from the original concept, design options and trialling of materials to the finished product and evaluation.

“Over its 11 years Top Designs has featured the works of more than 1200 young designers, inspiring thousands more. It’s especially important that all students receive free admission to the exhibition so that we can continue to encourage and support our next generation of designers,” said Dunlop.

“The VCAA welcomes the partnership with Melbourne Museum, one of Victoria’s key cultural institutions. Together we are providing an engaging series of education programs aimed at this year’s VCE student that will greatly enhance the educational role of the exhibition” said Mr John Firth, Chief Executive Office of the Victorian Curriculum and Assessment Authority.

Visitors are also encouraged to vote for their favourite work in the exhibition as part of the Eckersley’s People’s Choice Award.

Top Designs is a major component of the VCE Season of Excellence, managed by the Victorian Curriculum and Assessment Authority.
