Gryphon Entertainment is pleased to announce the critically acclaimed Winter’s Bone will receive a dual format release on DVD and Blu-ray May 20. Nominated for four Academy Awards® including Best Actress (Jennifer Lawrence) and Best Picture, Debra Granik’s powerful film concerns a teenage girl caught up in a blood feud while searching for her missing father in Missouri’s eerie Ozark Highlands. The film has also been nominated in the categories for Best Adapted Screenplay and Best Supporting Actor (John Hawkes). Based on the country noir bestseller by Daniel Woodrell, Winter’s Bone has already garnered myriad awards including the Grand Jury Prize and Waldo Salt Screenwriting Award at last year’s Sundance Film Festival.
“It’s a film full of mounting tensions and an atmosphere of dread and incipient terror that will make you uncomfortably familiar with the edge of your seat,” writes Allan Jones in Uncut “which is where you’ll mostly watch it from.”
Gryphon will provide fulfillment on behalf of content partner Curious Film. To date, Winter’s Bone continues an exceptional theatrical run having compiled nearly $550K at the Australian box office.
Curious Film director Michael Wrenn expects acknowledgments from the Golden Globe and Academy Awards coupled with its critical reception and strong performance at the box office both overseas and locally to enhance the title’s profile at home entertainment. “For an independent film made on a limited budget it is a great achievement,” he said. “Curious are looking to be able to take on strong dramatic stories and feature films that larger companies and independents see as requiring too much in the way of specialist handling and bringing these to the market place.”
Glenn Elliott Gryphon Managing Director said Curious Film added another dimension to the Gryphon catalogue. “We’re thrilled to be working with Curious Film and excited by the overwhelming response Winter’s Bone has triggered in audiences all over the country,” he said.
