COMPETITIONS OPEN TO SYDNEY RESIDENTS ONLY
The renowned Canadian
festival Hot Docs, the world’s leading documentary film festival will
bring 24 inspiring and thought-provoking films from 15 different
countries. The program has been curated by artistic director Richard
Moore and will include a wide range of topics for the curious mind.
Mr Gaga, the audience award winner for Documentary Spotlight at South by
Southwest 2016 about the Batsheva Dance Company, will be the opening
night film for both Melbourne and Canberra. In Sydney, the festival will
open with League of Exotique Dancers, a provocative and eye-opening
“backstage tour” of the golden age of Burlesque through the colourful
lives of unforgettable women who made it glitter. Opening nights feature
live entertainment, drinks, canapés and short speeches.
Other highlights include Jim: The James Foley Story, about the
journalist who was executed by ISIS in 2014, which won the audience
award at Sundance this year; The Road, which looks at corruption in
China; and What Tomorrow Brings, which looks at a woman’s fight to
educate young girls in Afghanistan. Two Australian documentaries -
Charlie Hill Smith’s Motorkite Dreaming and Helen Kapalos’s A Life Of
its Own - will have their world premiere at the festival.
