What’s cooking with Alexa?

Since Australia went into level three lockdown, a lot has changed in our daily lives. For many of us, our hectic work days are free from commuting and we now find ourselves with extra time on our hands to finesse our skills in the kitchen. We’re now back living in peak 2012, when everyone took pride in posting pictures of their meals on Instagram – except this time, it’s not about that smashed avo at brunch, it’s about our favourite recipe that we’ve managed to master.

Amazon Alexa customers are getting hot in the kitchen too with a 59% increase in food-related requests to Alexa in the last three weeks since the lockdown measures were put in place.

We’ve seen a mix of requests trending from basic asks such as “Alexa, show me easy dinner recipes” and “Alexa, how do I boil an egg”, to more adventurous requests for guacamole and homemade bread recipes (of course, banana bread recipes ranking high too!). Alexa customers can also use the Taste skill to request their suggested recipe of the day with decadent delights coming back such as a Lemon Curd Custard Cake recipe.

Hilariously, requests for salted marinated cucumber recipes were trending amongst our Aussie customers following Jimmy Fallon and Tina Fey playing ‘Hey Robot’ with Alexa on The Tonight Show recently (skip to 22:27).

Food recipes haven’t been the only requests to Alexa, cocktail recipes have also been a popular ask – happy hour needed now more than ever before to get us through the long weeks. Customers have been asking for margaritas and espresso martini recipes – asking Alexa’s Cocktail King skill for recipes is a good way to kick off your Friday night drinks. Just say “Alexa, ask Cocktail King for a margarita recipe”.
