The Spectacular Spider-Men #1 Review

Arachnoventuring

The Spider-Men of Brooklyn and Manhattan team up in an all-new adventure in their shared hero profession as Spider-Man. The Spectacular Spider-Men #1 brings together Peter Parker and Mile Morales on a fun and refreshing experience filled with quips any Spider-Man fan would enjoy. Wanting to exchange knowledge and spend good old-fashioned quality time, Peter proposes to Miles that they would meet up with each other to catch up from time to time once a week. Little did they know this meet-up would lead them to face the Jackal. Swinging into action, Peter and Miles take on the Jackal but not without the classical whims of being a Spider-Man in the face of danger.

Written by Greg Weisman (Gargoyles, Young Justice), The Spectacular Spider-Men #1 is a well-crafted tale of two heroes bonding with one another on so much more than hero duty. The fascinating progression of the story hinges on how well Miles and Peter interact with one another. Whether in or out of costume, both spectacular individuals do not fall short of letting their personalities speak for themselves. Despite both Spider-Men having their flow of a Spidey style, it isn’t often they are seen just hanging about with each other unless they are in the middle of a multiverse phenomenon. What Weisman has here is a story that Spidey fans will relish.
Moreover, Weisman nearly breaks the fourth wall when Peter mentions he’s been webbing for what he feels like at least sixty years, which is a great nod to the comic books that came before. For a brief moment of silence, Peter and Miles pull off a tag team move that is about as cool as possible and worth a read. This comic book demonstrates that the story, characters, and direction of the development are in capable storytelling hands.

Speaking of hands, Humberto Ramos (Battle Chasers, The Astonishing Spider-Man) returns to illustrate another captivating venture into the Spidey sensational mythos. Contributing as the penciller, Ramos provides excellent visuals displayed in The Spectacular Spider-Men #1. Ramos’s art style always seems to be a grandeur expression that suits the expectation of a Spider-Man story. While his art captivates the reader, it always establishes detail and the overall world in which Spider-Man resides.

Comparably, Edgar Delgado (Animal Woman, Blade, Cable) as the colorist and Victor Olazaba (All-New Wolverine, The Avengers, Batman Eternal) as the inker of The Spectacular Spider-Men #1 terrifically endowed the story with vigorous colors mixed with depth-filled environments. The combination of these two professionals working in unison compliments each other’s work so much that it allows the pages to breathe with vitality. Each panel has its uniqueness to it and thankfully that’s due to Olazaba and Delgado.

The lettering by Joe Caramagna (Amazing X-Men, Captain Marvel, Daredevil) was a pleasure to observe and appreciate. The placement of the word bubbles, sound effects, and other devices was positioned impeccably well.

Ramos and Delgado provided the comic book with a great cover that not only reels in a reader but also serves as the starting point for the inside of the comic book. It may not seem that way at first but given the first few pages, it appears the cover wasn’t just something to look at and dismiss.

Overall, The Spectacular Spider-Men #1 has a lot of potential to become a fan favorite among Spidey fans who enjoy reading his comics. With Miles by his side, the fun is just beginning, and a lot more seems about to unfold. Be sure to pick this one up from your local comic bookstore and online wherever comics are sold. There’s a sense that something is brewing, and you don’t want to miss out on something so spectacular.
