National Geographic the Science of Cats and Dogs

This delightful documentary by National Geographic focuses solely on the domestic cat and dog that collects both episodes on one disc. This two part series focuses on how the wild cat and dog became domestic pets and how humans had a role in shaping man’s best friend.

According to scientists at the University of California and through DNA analysis, it is theorised that cats originated from both Egypt and Turkey. Given that cats were worshipped by the Egyptians, it is easy to see this strong link to this ancient culture.

What I like about the first episode of this collection is that cats were originally fierce hunters but through the domestication of cats, they have accepted man as part of their packs. However being a dog lover, the second episode was the highlight for me that went into some detail of how wild dogs became man’s best friend.

Amazingly there are over 400 different breeds of dogs from across the globe and ironically 80% of these breeds did not exist over 150 years ago. Although mankind has genetically bred these dogs, the episode still highlights that some dogs are still wild animals, especially those men who breed these animals for hunting.

Nonetheless if you are a cat of dog lover, this documentary will provide a new insight into how these animals have become part of our lives, no matter what country you are from.
