Purr-fect!

Meet Mittens, Wellington’s world-famous cat-about-town. He has thousands of followers, a hit song, an exhibition of fan art, and with his exploring paws he brings joy to everyone he meets!

This delightful story by author Silvio Bruinsma and illustrator Phoebe Morris is inspired by the real-world “celebrity” cat of Wellington New Zealand who took the country and world by storm during the 2020 COVID-19 lockdowns and brought a much needed distraction and enjoyment to the lives of thousands of people. As the citizens of Wellington followed the exploits of this Turkish Angora feline, he was even awarded a Key to the City and nominated for New Zealander of the Year and this is the inspiration behind this delightful book.

The Real life Mittens of Wellington New Zealand

In the children’s book, The Adventures of Mittens: Wellington’s Famous Purr-Sonality, the story starts with two royal kittens called Latte and Mittens with one loving to stay home and other loving to explore. This is where we follow Mittens as he goes on a wonderful journey throughout his home town of Wellington from joining a graduation, exploring a church and even going up a lift in an office block. He also meets all sorts of people, including the mayor where he is awarded a key to the city. With all this adventure in Wellington, he eventually comes home to his brother Latte and human family which nicely ends the story. Apart from the beautiful illustrations of Phoebe Morris who helps captivate the reader and bring the story of Mittens to life, the text flows extremely well thanks to author Silvio Bruinsma that will definitely resonate with the younger reader and helps with this amusing cat’s tail. As a result, our girls loved this book and of course the protagonist, Mittens.

Final thoughts?

If you have younger children and looking for the perfect bedtime book, The Adventures of Mittens: Wellington’s Famous Purr-Sonality is not only well-written but wonderfully illustrated about this real-world animal celebrity and will definitely inspire their imagination.
