Cost effective!
If you’re on a budget and looking for an additional NVMe or building a new PC, TeamGroup offers a range of sizes (512GB to 8TB) and prices to suit your needs. Today, we’re checking out their TeamGroup MP44Q 2TB, which retails in Australia for around $130 AUD.
With an M.2 Type-2280 form factor, it uses the PCIe 4.0 bus and is powered by a MaxioTech MAP1602A Falcon Lite controller with YMTC 232-layer quad-level cell (QLC) 3D NAND flash memory and an SLC Write Cache. To help with heat dissipation, it comes with a graphene heat spreader, making it ideal for both PCs and even the PlayStation 5.
From its components, it boasts sequential read speeds of up to 7400MB/s and sequential write speeds of up to 6500MB/s. Its endurance rating is 1024 TBW (Terabytes Written), backed by a generous 5-year limited warranty. TeamGroup also provides an SSD S.M.A.R.T. tool, which can be downloaded to provide information about the drive, including performance. Given the price, there is no cloning or backup software included.
Unboxing and Testing
Once installed in our review system, we were ready to test the MP44Q. Our first test was CrystalDiskMark. CrystalDiskMark is a popular disk benchmark software used to measure the performance of storage devices, such as SSDs, HDDs, and USB drives. It provides detailed information on sequential and random read/write speeds.
The scores for Sequential Write Speed: 6642 MB/s and Sequential Read Speed: 7412 MB/s are excellent for transferring large files and loading applications quickly. As a result, this drive is great for everyday use, including gaming.
Next, we tested the MP44Q with PCMark 10. The PCMark 10 Storage Test is a comprehensive benchmark designed to evaluate the performance of storage devices using real-world traces from popular applications and common tasks. It consists of four different tests, each targeting different aspects of storage performance: Full System Drive Benchmark, Quick System Drive Benchmark, Data Drive Benchmark, and Performance Consistency Test.
The drive scored nicely in the middle of the pack among its modern SSD competitors, and given the price of this NVMe, it’s impressive to say the least.
Another test was the 3DMark Storage Test. The 3DMark Storage Benchmark is a dedicated component test designed to measure the gaming performance of your storage hardware. It evaluates how well your SSD or other storage devices handle real-world gaming tasks such as loading games, saving progress, installing game files, and recording gameplay video streams. The drive scored nicely in the middle among modern SSDs.
Final Thoughts
Although not the fastest NVMe SSD on the block, it provides excellent value for money that cannot be faulted, with speeds that hover above the average mark, sometimes even higher. If you have a new system or are looking to upgrade on a budget, the 2TB NVMe SSD from TeamGroup delivers performance with peace of mind, backed by a 5-year warranty… of your PlayStation 5 or PS5 Pro needs more storage.
