Sneaky Sniper

I have a love-hate relationship with the Sniper Elite series of games—I love playing them, but I dread the thought that each one might be the last. At the end of Sniper Elite 5, everything seemed neatly wrapped up, which left me with that uneasy feeling. Fortunately, there was a solution: a new character. In Sniper Elite Resistance, you play as Harry Hawker, an SOE (Special Operations Executive) operative working with the French Resistance to stop the deployment of a new Wunderwaffe (“wonder weapon”).

For those who have played Sniper Elite 5 (or any game in the series, but specifically 5), the gameplay will feel very familiar. The mechanics are primarily the same, though there are a few new elements. First is the option to play the levels cooperatively. I could be wrong, but I’m pretty sure that previously, there was only the incursion option (which returns here if you are willing to have the cheatbuster program installed).

This time, however, you can have a friend join you in your mission to overcome the Nazi forces. You can share weapons, items, and skills, and synchronizing your attacks to remove threats makes infiltration much easier. For example, one player can subdue a guard at one point while the other subdues a second guard.

The X-Ray kill cam is, of course, back—would it be Sniper Elite without it? Bullets can bounce off bones and deflect to take new paths of destruction through your target’s body. SMGs and pistols also trigger kill cams, showing multiple bullet paths.

Another new feature is the propaganda missions. Scattered throughout the campaign are propaganda posters. When you find one, it will give you access to a mission in which you step into the shoes of a French Resistance fighter. These scenarios focus mostly on sniping or sneaking and are timed. They provide a nice bit of variety and give you a reason to replay maps in the main campaign if you missed the propaganda poster the first time.

The only real negative I have about the game (other than it ending) is a minor but persistent issue: collecting items. When I find an item to collect, primarily documents but not exclusively, I sometimes have to do a little dance to get my character facing the right way to provide the option to collect. It’s not a deal breaker, just a frustration, but it’s still present in Sniper Elite Resistance.

Final Thoughts

Sniper Elite Resistance is another solid entry in the Sniper Elite series. I was thrilled to learn that it was coming out and I hope the franchise continues. We now know we aren’t locked into one character, so the options for different times throughout the conflict and different experiences open up.

Sniper Elite Resistance has taken what makes the series great and honed it even further, building upon the success and fan-favorite aspects of Sniper Elite 5 and tweaking it to provide even more excitement and fun. It is still immensely satisfying to get a long-range shot without assistance in one go, or to manage to attach a sticky grenade to an enemy and have it go off amongst other troops. Definitely worth grabbing a copy if you are a fan of the series or sniping games in general!
