Running Wild Bear Grylls DVD Review
Summary: Running Wild Bear Grylls is deliciously Bear flavoured chunks that had me surprised at how easily "I marathon-ed" through them, recommended!
4.5
Bear Goodness!
“You’ve gotta chew it! You don’t want it wriggling all the way, otherwise it might crawl out of a weird orifice or something.” – Bear Grylls
There is nothing better than your daily dose of Schadenfreude in the form of Bear Grylls torturing celebrities in his ‘Running Wild’ series.
Six 40ish minute sessions of pure, unadulterated endurance testing sounded good to me! So “bearly” containing my excitement, I could not wait to sit down and feast my eyes on celebrities such as Ben Stiller, Channing Tatum, Zac Efron, (and some Americans who I don’t know) getting forced to eat things like elephant poop and scorpion claws for no particular reason, and roll around in the dirt all in the name of entertainment…
I had high expectations, which I had based entirely on the 30 second adverts I had seen for his one man show many years ago on Discovery Channel, so I didn’t really know how it would go… I was a Bear virgin, all I knew about him was that he was hot, and possibly the human version of that ‘Action Man’ toy I loved a little too much growing up…
However I had always assumed that the promos contained ‘all the best bits’ much like the trailers for a B-grade action movie, showing every explosion and plot twist, leaving no reason to fork out money to see it.
Full of hope that the show would hopefully NOT just be a dragged out, pretentious, wild, ex-SAS-commando-man showing off to a camera while they feasted on 6-course banquets off camera- and slept in comfortable beds while pretending to be tough on screen.
I wasn’t disappointed! There definitely was lots of seemingly unnecessary eating of strange things.
My favourite quote comes from the episode with Zac Efron, where Bear, ever the practical man says: “Tell you what, I’ll have half and you have half. Just remember, you’ve gotta chew it! You don’t want it wriggling all the way, otherwise it might crawl out of a weird orifice or something.”
However this show was a little more than I had first expected, not only was he forcing the celebrities to endure seemingly humiliating tasks, but they seemed (for the most part) to enjoy it!
One phrase he kept repeating was “I promised to get you to the end safely”, and he certainly didn’t break any promises there, but not only that, he seemed to be exceptionally talented at getting them through it, constantly reassuring them, congratulating them, and just generally making them feel like they were killing it, and they were!
Expecting to watch the episodes in six separate, delicious Bear flavoured chunks, I was surprised at how easily I marathon-ed through them.
Final Thoughts?
There’s something soothing about listening to Bear describe how to rappel face first down a cliff, and the obviously vulnerable celebs must have felt the same way, as they opened up about their personal lives, telling stories of childhood angst, and the downsides of being childhood actors. It was kind of like the weirdest chat show ever.
