The Suffering: Ties that Bind
Once again explore the darkness as The
Suffering is brought to new heights in this latest instalment to the
title. You again play as Torque, a man whose history is a mess and he
has trouble piecing it all together. He also apparently killed his own
family, or did he? The cool thing about this game is that it really
attempts true character building through a retrospective flashback.
Once
again we are on the hunt for Blackmoore, the dude from the first game.
You are faced with an interesting conundrum in that you can choose your
own destiny by good deeds or evil acts. Will you redeem Torque or send
him into the Abyss? The moral storyline idea is a cool one and is a part
of the game that will really change the way that the title progresses
and the imagery that you see.
From a
first person perspective I enjoyed this game though I would be keen to
see it on the XBox, having played the first game on that console. It
looks good on the PS2 however and players are assured of a very creepy,
at times quite scary gameplay experience. Navigation and general
controls are also upgraded from last time with the range of movement
upgraded which players will like.
Keep
an ear out for the audio on this game as it plays a key part in the
overall experience that you are going to have. Some very clever use of
audio will turn your blood to ice on occasions so try to get yourself a
decent audio hook up.
This
time the game takes place in Baltimore instead of on the prison island
and this does make a big difference to the general gameplay with a
feeling of freedom not found in the claustrophobic confines of the
prison yard. The amount of weapons also is reduced from unlimited down
to two weapons, like Halo, so players need to work out what they are
going to get the best result with. I found a shotgun solves a lot of
problems but is not as good over a distance.
Some
might argue that this game is very similar to the original and to be
honest I would have to agree. There are some major differences though
and as a fan of the first I can say that I heartily enjoyed this title.
Not only for the gameplay itself but to find out what the truth was
behind our enigmatic leading character, Torque.
