A good night out!
The Malthouse Theatre production of Keziah Warner’s interpretation of Nosferatu was an exceptional showcase of storytelling and dramatic performance, with Jacob Collins Levy delivering an outstanding portrayal of the infamous vampire, Count Orlok. The revised story, set in Tasmania’s town of “Bluewater,” added an intriguing Australian twist to the classic tale of horror, with the mining town that time left behind providing a perfect setting for the eerie story to unfold.
The well-crafted script delivered a perfect mix of suspense and humor throughout the show, with a number of hilarious one-liners that collectively made the audience chuckle and showcased superior scriptwriting. While the majority of the production was captivating and engaging, there were a few moments where the show’s pacing ebbed and flowed, causing some distraction to the audience. Additionally, while the sound design was effective in creating a sinister atmosphere, some of the sounds were a bit grating on the ears over time.
The production team’s efforts were highly evident, with remarkable set design and effective use of lighting, sound, and special effects. The attention to detail in the costume design, makeup, and special effects was impressive and added a new dimension to the production.
Overall, the theater production of Nosferatu was a captivating and well-executed performance that was highly enjoyable for all those who attended. The Australian twist added a unique and refreshing dimension to the classic tale of horror, making it a truly memorable experience. The exceptional cast and crew, including Sophie Ross, Keegan Joyce, Max Brown, and Shamita Siva, deserve applause for their hard work and dedication in creating such a remarkable production.
