Interesting

Hey readers, welcome to another review of a new comic by me, your comic guru (Self-Proclaimed). This time we are jumping into a new Dark Horse title, Mulan Revelations.

From now on, to be fair to a series and you the reader, I will be reviewing only number one issues of new series (last year release), which will give us a better idea of what comics you will need to read, and what ones you can avoid.

Mulan Revelations is the new comic creation from Creator Robert Alter, Writer Marc Andreyko, and Artist Micah Kaneshiro and was released by Dark Horse Comics. I was not sure what to expect as my only thoughts of Mulan are some of the history behind her legend, and the Disney movie which still makes me sing along when it’s on. This was going to go one of two ways, so lets see which way it went.

WRITING – 3

One thing I can say for sure is that Marc Andreyko can put together a really good script. The tone of the comic is a sci-fi history type of script, where they do touch on a bit of the story behind Mulan with a new twist. His character development is amazing, especially considering he tries to do that with only a few pages in most cases. My only real issue with it is that there is a lot of different story arcs tossed at you in such a short amount of time that it can be a bit much to take in. If you are new to reading comics than this one may throw you off.

Robert Alter managed to captivate a character that most of us have heard of and bring us a new look on her backstory. Above that, he managed to create a kick-ass super heroine who can handle herself in a world of male superiority. With help from her “ancestors” she can probably overcome all obstacles.

ART – 3

There is no question that Micah Kaneshiro has a unique art style, and that he knows what he is doing with negative space. His line work is not clean, but it works for this comic story and design. It is just dirty enough to make you want to see more. His creation of the ancestor ghosts, and his take on the demons in the story are very cool. There is a lot of original design which can be hard to do in this age of comic creation. Very imaginative looks with the characters.

My main qualm with the art is that the bright times are far too bright, and the darker times are just over saturated with colour. It can take some adjusting, and actually takes away from what the story is saying as you have to scan the images a lot to keep up with the frame changes. A lot of use of heavy blacks and dark colours that are overdoing it a bit.

OVERALL (With Spoilers) – 3

The story is a really original take on a well known character as I’ve mentioned before. It is a concept that I love, because I am a big history buff. It is good to see an adaptation of a real character. I would say it is a must read for those who enjoy history, enjoy sci-fi, and enjoy time line style comics.

The story starts with Mulan fighting to survive and save her people. She has a near death experience where her ancestors are forced to pull her out of her reality and transport themselves into her body. I am guessing they imbue her with their power before giving her a rebirth in our future. Once reborn (and it seems with no current knowledge of who she was/is) she leads a normal life with her brother, uncle, and the world dying of disease. Wait, what? Where the hell did the disease come from and what does it do? What’s in store for Mulan and her family? Who wants to learn more about this story? You’ll have to pick it up to know more, and keep an eye on the title.
