Summary: The MSO: Dvořák and Bruckner is another powerful performance of music

Powerful

The Melbourne Symphony Orchestra (MSO) returned to the Geelong Arts Centre with Dvořák’s Violin Concerto and Bruckner’s Fourth Symphony. This performance also brought world acclaimed violinist Karen Gomyo into the mix of this once in a lifetime experience in Victoria’s second largest city.

The music produced by the MSO was a true orchestral fiesta and the performance was another example of the orchestra’s perfect coordination and ability to render three well known composers (Dvořák, Smetana and Bruckner) with their charming and beautiful compositions, conducted by our very own Australian conductor Daniel Carter.

Carter virtually took the whole orchestra on his shoulder, almost jumping off his stand to get the appropriate musicians attention when it was their moment to play. The violinists of the MSO all had a major role in this concert and all played in perfect harmony. And together with the entire orchestra, it was a very moving and emotional performance.

Both Smetana’s and Dvořák’s numbers took me back to my early years, the early forties where I had a number of country stays in small villages. It was here where I had the opportunity to observe village life, including their interactions with each other and the weekend dances. By closing my eyes and listening to the music, I felt I was there and witnessing a country get together with the dancing of a younger generation.

Bruckner’s Fourth Symphony was indeed a huge contrast to me that reminded me of war, marching soldiers, the clashes of two armies moving back and forth that was mirrored by the powerful music and finally the music quietening to show the inevitable end of hostilities.

‘The peak of the concert was violinist Karen Gomyo who masterfully played solo then blending in with the violin players, then moving back to another solo, and so on – her performance was breathtaking and she will definitely become an unforgettable outstanding violinist. Of course, every person in the MSO was equally impressive and the sum of all parts was something spectacular and a true orchestral powerhouse.

Kudos to Daniel Carter, Karen Gomyo and the entire MSO who delivered another wonderful evening at the Geelong Arts Centre.
