Motorola Edge Pro 50 Review

The Motorola Edge Pro 50 retails for $999AUD (July 2024) and is powered by the Snapdragon 7 Gen 3 Processor with 12GB of RAM plus 256GB of internal storage. This mid range phone comes with a 6.7 SuperHD pOLED 2712 x 1220 display with Dolby Atmos to help bring your multimedia to life. Add in a 4500 mAH all-day battery, 125W fast charging and four cameras (Rear 50MP + 13MP + 10MP, Front 50MP), including a powerful telephoto lens. All this and more under the stylish and curved Motorola Edge Pro screen and casing which stands out from its competitors, especially with its edge lighting to alert you of notifications and alarms. What about colours? The Edge Pro 50 is available in Luxe Lavender, Moonlight Pearl and Black Beauty.

Oh… the phone box comes with a fragrence signature which is a nice way to welcome your new phone to al your senses, nicely done Motorola!

Once you have turned on the Motorola Edge Pro 50, you are greeted by the “hello moto” welcome screen which is powered by Android. This will take you through the setup wizard, including transferring data from your existing smartphone. When you complete the setup process, you’re ready to use the phone. The Motorola Edge Pro 50 is a fast and responsive phone with an exceptional display which is a joy to use thanks to its colours and clarity. Although Android 14 is the current operating system, there are a handful of Motorola apps to enhance and protect your experience which are optional for the user. To unlock the device, you can use the screen, the fingerprint reader or facial recognition – all three work very fast.

Operating System

The 125W charging capabilities of the Motorola Edge 50 Pro is like a true powerup but just be warned that the phone does get a little warm but considering its speed, it is a small price to pay given how fast it can charge this device. Additionally it supports Qi  or wireless (up to 50W) charging as well but you really can’t beat a full charge in around 20-minutes. The dimensions of the phone is a good size of 161.23 x 72.4 x 8.19mm with a weight of 186grams.

The 6.7 inch pOLED display with SuperHD resolution, including a 144Hz refresh rate with HDR10+ compatibility is a beautiful piece of digital art. Colours pop and images/text is extremely sharp which makes using this phone quite the experience – in other words, this display will make you appreciate your photos, videos (e.g. streaming) or playing games that little bit more.  Further, audio was quite clear with the speakers on the Edge Pro 50, however external speakers or earbuds are still the best audio option.

The Motorola Edge 50 Pro uses an ARM CPU with 4-core and a speed of up to 2.6Ghz with 12GB of RAM plus an Andreno 72o CPU. As a result, it makes this smartphone perfect for those looking at performance and speed. Whether this is running apps, surfing the net, taking photos, streaming videos or playing games, the Edge 50 Pro is fast. Our first test was 3DMark which tests the GPU and CPU of your smartphone that is then compared to other devices on the market. 3DMark offers a handful of tests with the Edge 50 Pro scoring quite well for this mid range device.

Benchmarks

Similar to 3DMark is Geekbench that tests both the CPU and GPU. Although not the fastest phone, its test places it in the right ballpark of where its CPU and GPU should be sitting. So no surprises here in terms of unexpected results and for its price, still very worthy.

Gaming

The Motorola Edge Pro 50 can game – enough said. Titles such as Call of Duty Mobile, Genshin Impact, Asphalt Legelds 9 and Diablo Immortal performed like a portable next-gen console. The only downside to mobile gaming (Edge Pro 50 included) is that it will drain your battery faster but game work like a treat and look great on the display. Diablo Immortal was also super smooth thanks to its 60 frames per second.

Photography

The Motorola Edge 50 pro is also the world’s first smartphone with a Pantone Validated camera and display which means more natural colours, particularly skin tones. Although this phone supports the Google gimmicks of removing backgrounds or best take, Motorola add AI into how the photos are captures that in turns ensures the best possible images are captured by adjusting the settings on the fly, including enhance images and reducing noise. Also both front and rear 50MP cameras support high quality lenses which really shows on the images that they have captured. Whether good light or low light, the Motorola Edge 50 Pro scores excellent photography goals, including its zoom capabilities.
