Spiegelworld Presents
EMPIRE
World's Most Outrageous Spiegeltent Show
Straight from its sell-out season on
Broadway New York comes Empire, a 21st century theatrobatic
adventure. Imagine a twisted version of Alice in Wonderland and
at the other end of the rabbit hole is Empire, an extraordinary
performance of acrobats, musicians, comedians and performers that will
leave you awestruck and laughing from this strange burlesque circus.
Consider it the darker and sexier psyche of Cirque du Soleil as
these performers entertain you under the Spiegeltent in this intimate
venue of cabaret, acrobatics and contortion.
Although the Sydney season of Empire
has concluded, Melbournites still have until the 12th of May to
experience this must see spectacular with Brisbane hosting the final
shows in Australia. The Brisbane dates for Empire commence on the
24th of May and conclude on the 16th of June. So what exactly is
Empire? According to Spiegelworld, Empire is a love letter
from New York City that brings together a stellar cast of international
performers on a 3 metre diameter stage.
Running at around 90 minutes, viewers can
expect a night to remember with the presentation hosted by Oscar and
Fanny. This comic duo will leave you in stitches as they perform this
weird courtship amongst themselves and even one lucky VIP audience
member. From a quick change magic routine that goes horribly wrong to
Oscar and Fanny performing a banana spit trick that is not only quite
disgusting but one of the funniest things I have ever witnessed, these
two definitely help warm up the crowd.
Empire is also a celebration of the
human body and some of the amazing feats that it can achieve such as
Russian gymnast Elena Lev who performs an astonishing acrobatic
and contortion act inside a bubble that is raised above the audience.
Then we have the French gymnasts, Lime Green Lady and Carrot
Man who beautifully perform this erotic ballet with the utmost
strength and flexibility. Another gymnast act are the Gorilla Girls
from the Ukraine, Kateryna Rudenko, Alina Reutska and Alona Stekolnikova
who perform this sexy burlesque acrobatic act that defies physics and
strength.
The Japanese artist known as the Wheel
Master leaves the audience awestruck from his gigantic hula
hoop to a giant metal wheel as he manages to use it like a monkey bar
rolling within in the small confines of the stage. There are so many
highlights in Empire that choosing a favourite is virtually impossible
like Ethiopian foot juggler Black Flintstone spinning and tossing
his brother Big Mac Boy in the air is truly insane to watch as are
the two skaters. The show ends with a deft defying performance by the
"Stick Guy", Memet Bilgin who somehow manages to balance a
feather on a dozen or so long sticks which will leave you mesmerised.
The concentration and skill required by Memet is unbelievable.
Final Thoughts?
Empire is a must see performance
that can be enjoyed by the intimacy of the Spiegeltent that is a
celebration of femininity, masculinity and sexuality which is
accompanied by the live music of Miss Purple with guitarist
Moondog plus the awesome comedy of Oscar and Fanny. Just be warned
that Empire can be a little crude and even rude with some unexpected
nudity! It's a must see show of epic proportions!
