Major Sam Interview (Our hero of Cosplay!)
Welcome to Impulse Gamer Major Sam! So tell us how you became involved in cosplay?
I attended my first Brisbane Supanova in 2010 with my brother. I knew people dressed up but didn’t know what to expect. I was already heavily interested in costumes at the time so I was pretty excited. As soon as I saw what everyone was doing I thought, “yes, these are my people”.
When you put on a finished costume, what are your thoughts?
It varies from costume to costume. It doesn’t really properly click until I get photos back. Emotions range between disappointment, happiness, powerful or ugly crying for no reason. But most of the time it is, “FINALLY. …now I can start that other costume…”.
Tell us what the best part of cosplay is?
I love creating and using my hands. I also love learning new crafting techniques and cosplay is a perfect platform for that. Recently I have discovered ‘tambour beading’ which is how they bead fabric in the Paris fashion houses. I find it really relaxing and can be applied in many designs.
What about most challenging?
Surviving a full day in a massive costume and still try to look good into photos at the end of the day. Bit hard to smile when your feet feel like they are going to fall off.
Who has been your favourite cosplay character and why?
Definitely Miss Kitty mouse. It’s comfortable, fun, sexy, flirty and I’m really proud of how it turned out.
Can you tell us a little about your inspirations when you create a costume?
Inspiration comes from everywhere. I do enjoy researching techniques used in haute couture fashion and seeing where I could apply those in my costume.
What’s been your most difficult costume to date?
Definitely La Carlotta due to only having 10 weeks, needing to learn screen printing on the fly and wearing such a heavy, detailed costume. I was up until 1-2am most weeknights for the last 5 weeks making it. But totally worth it in the end. No regrets!
In 2016, can you tell us what characters you may costume?
I am competing for Australia in the C2E2 Champions of Cosplay competition in Chicago as Julietta Necromancer which is a character created by the Japanese artist Sakizo. I will also be making Evie Frye from Assassins Creed: Syndicate.
Besides cosplay, what do you do in your down time?
Cosplay. Seriously. I’m that nuts. I do enjoy playing video games….but I sew at the same time.
To date, what’s been your favourite con and why?
Probably have to say OZCC Sydney 2015 when I won the national finals. Definitely memorable. Or hanging out with the Artful Dodger on the beach in our Road to Eldorado costumes at Gold Coast Supanova 2015. She’s a babe. Check her out.
Thanks for taking interest in my work! :D
