Logitech’s G502 X Plus is the latest addition to their G502 lineage and comes with some new innovative features to take it to the next level.
Featuring Logitech’s first LIGHTFORCE hybrid switches, LIGHTSPEED pro-grade wireless, LIGHTSYNC RGB and HERO 25K optical sensor. It is also POWERPLAY compatible to avoid concern of running out of power.
But what does all that mean? Well, the LIGHTFORCE hybrid switches are basically what they sound like, a mix of optical and mechanical to utilize the speed of light (the optical) which gives exceptional response time but also means longer switch life as there is less wear and tear. The mechanical gives you the tactile response of being able to feel that switch and provides that click for audio feedback
The LIGHTSPEED wireless is the result of a lot of prototyping and programming to optimize every step of the process to ensure response time is as quick as possible.
LIGHTSYNC RGB gives you control (via G Hub) over approximately 16.8 million colours via an 8-LED array, it also uses active play detection to automatically dim when your hand moves it to save power.
The HERO 25K optical sensor provides sub micron accuracy, superior tracking and smart energy consumption. Through the G Hub it can be tweaked to a user’s preferred specs, adjusting increments of DPI, lift off distances and other elements to help personalize the mouse. You can also copy across previous mouse sensitivity settings to help reduce the “breaking in” period of your new mouse.
But what does all this mean in a practical sense? Well, out of the box the mouse looks stylish. The RGB pulses pleasantly through it’s path on the main body of the mouse (as opposed to some that are along the bottom portion). The DPI button on the side (which can be removed/adjusted) is handy for quickly changing if you need to adjust how precise your movements are.
The DPI can also be set in the G Hub which is fine but I did manage to put it into what seemed to be an infinite loop going between two DPI settings. I may have accidentally selected something that altered it depending on its perceived usage… but I’m really not sure. I tend to set and forget but it is certainly handy if things feel a little too loose or tight being able to just quickly tap the button and have the setting change.
I did have a little issue with the mouse wheel… It has two settings, either smooth or a ratcheted mode. I find the ratcheted mode a little noisier than I would like (similar to a mechanical keyboard, but on a scroll wheel) but the smooth scroll seems to suffer from backlash. So when scrolling, it will sometimes “backup” from where you had scrolled.
What I really appreciate is the charging indicator, a little light on the forward top of the mouse (above the charging port), it flashes green as it’s charging then stays on when fully charged. G Hub also states the current charge level which is super handy for knowing if you need to charge the mouse soon or if you’ve got plenty of use left.
I did find the USB C port to be a bit fiddly for inserting the charging cable into, it’s tucked under the front of the mouse which means you have to use a straight USB C adapter and it’s a fairly narrow point so it can be a little fiddly to use. Once the cable is in it’s all good though.
Final Thoughts?
It took me a little while to get used to the little “thumb ledge” but it all feels very natural now. The ergonomics are really refined, making it feel very comfortable to use. I’m a sucker for RGB lighting and the LEDs in use here are beautiful, bright and vibrant providing stunning colour. Response is excellent and other than the slight issue with the scroll wheel it is a real pleasure to use. One full charge lasts quite a few days of decent use. All in all… yep, highly recommend!
