Wow! One of the most
professional looking extreme discs that I have seen in some time. Anyone with
more than a passing interest in the topic of all things snow related would
probably have heard of Warren Miller as a man who has been heavily involved in
skiing for over 60 years!
Cold Fusion takes us all
over the world with top class skiers and snowboarders as they take on some of
the most challenging slopes that the world has to offer. Breathtaking scenery
is the call of the day on this disc and not a single area visited is one that
you wouldn't wish that you were lucky enough to visit.
Possibly the most
fascinating part of the disc is an inland trek to Mount Kenya, surprisingly
enough in Kenya, Africa. Going through the hot jungle for five days and
climbing to the top of Mount Kenya showed us an expanse of ski-able snow at
the summit! To see people skiing in an area not known for cold weather was
simply amazing and I longed to be there just to experience it.
Of course a snow flick
would not be a snow flick without some footage of Whistler and some crazy
people carving it up on the slopes
4x3 full frame. Despite
the full screen, this doesn't take too much away from the visual feast that is
in store. It seemed that the extras section might not have been as polished as
the main feature, however considering the insane footage that is on offer,
this is certainly not a problem.
The mix on this disc
is Dolby 5.1 which sounds great all the way through. Accompanying the feature
is a great soundtrack that will have your heart rate rising along with the
grandeur of the footage. Artists such as Frank Black, Johnny Cash, Dave
Matthews, Jurassic 5, Nelly Furtado, G. Love, The String Cheese Incident, and
the Foo Fighters bring the
screen to life.
The highlight of all the audio for me of course was the narration by Miller
himself, who despite his age, is so enthusiastic about all things snow
related, along with his great dry sense of humour, makes this disc a very
special event indeed.
Very impressive,
considering how good the feature is. My favourite section here was the base
jumping in Europe. The footage simply has to be seen to be believed. Another
interesting area is the ascent to the top of a mountain in Iran and the
conditions the team found along the way. Highly enjoyable and worth the watch.
