You
have to love the originals, and Texas Chainsaw Massacre is an original. Based
on a true story, although I don’t know how true as there are sequels to this
film, it is a tale about five teenagers who set about checking on their
grandfather’s graves due to grave robbers. Only one youth survives in this
tragic tale.
In the
25 anniversary director’s edition, the film is digitally remastered in
widescreen and Dolby sound. It has extra footage over the original, although
it doesn’t exactly say how much. Picture quality is what is to be expected as
this film was made in 1974, so it’s a bit grainy but also adds to the
atmosphere. Tobe Hooper has done an excellent job directing this film, having
the right music to set the tone in the right places.
While
this isn’t a film which I would watch with someone on the first date, it is an
invaluable item to add to anyone's collection. The special features included a
director's narrative over the film, which gave it a true to life sort of feel.
